I stumbled upon this while browsing speaker demos. WOWZA! I forgot about the tone geekery and just sat back and enjoyed all those tasty licks. Soooooo good. For the Marshall sound I think I prefer the Greenbacks. The mix of both is a great option too. The Gold pairs so amazingly well with any Fender amp though IMO...suits the Fender sound-profile a little better for me, but it's such a great speaker you can't go wrong no matter what amp it's in. Bravo!
I liked the gold more. Louder, more low end. Very precise, though. Greenbacks have kinda..cut off bass, so to speak. Thing is: which would cut through the mix better. That’s the question.
Great blues riffing there! The Gold adds clarity that would cut better in a mix but the greenback sounds greasy in good way. With both the Gold just overpowered the greenback and was out front to me.Thanks,I'am considering getting a gold to replace the 30wt H I have in my JTM-45 style combo.
The greenback has a fuller, more low mids whereas the Gold has all that beautiful high end detail but without the Greenback's girth. I bet together these two speakers would be phenomenal for the amp you're using but after the first two 'speaker checks', all the other combined speaker samples sounded poorly mic'ed .. But so what .. I can easily imagine the two of these speakers working together to be the ideal sonic complement for this lower gain, Marshall gain type tone.
I keep bouncing back and forth between my Celestion gold and g12m greenback in my Marshall dsl40cr. I think I’ve settled on the gold but curious which you prefer? Love the sounds and gear!
I have the same exact problem and it's driving me nuts. I wish I could just settle on one and sell the other speaker. Each speaker has a different characteristic that i like (btw I have the 10's) For example, to me the greenback has more bass response, feels fuller, the gold feels more compressed with a tighter base and of course that chimey top end. I actually thought about getting 2x10 cab and using both but I can't find the right 2x10 cab. Anyway, dude, not being able to make up one's mind is worse than a drug addiction lol.
I have two golds and I have been going crazy since I would love to pair one gold and one Greenie, the thing is I would have to get rid of one gold and I am not so sure about that.
Both sound great. You just did very helpful comparison here, sir! I had this idea to buy a Vox AC30 S1 and replace stock speaker to Alnico gold. Now I am not so sure. Gold sounds to my ears as better for raw, piercing lead tone, while Green seems to be a bit more smoother, more versatile. What are your thoughts?
I just ordered a new ac15c1 with a greenback but I happen to have an alnico gold that I tried in a different amp last year. I'm thinking I'll try it once the greenback is broken in and compare the two. Good video!
