Hi Tim, Try printing a run of 5 prints between weighings, and then maybe 10. You should get 5 and 10 grams for the Epson, and if the Canon uses less than 25 and 50 grams you've probably got your answer regarding the cleaning cycles.

Can also remove the cartridges, wheiigh them, install, turn the printer on, then remove the cartridges again without making any prints and check if the wheiigh is the same. That will tell if the cleaning cycle after installing a cartridge consumes any ink.

Two suggestions: 1) Run a portfolio of 10 different photos for broad ink usage and then weigh. Subtract the 5 and 1 gram from the total to control for possible cleaning and divide by 9. 2) don't generalize print quantity in cartridge as an offset, but since paper and other supplies are the same, use cost per ml (convert to grams) of ink. in US$, the Pro-300 the 14.5ML @ $13 = $0.92/ml; while the P700 25ml at $38 =$1.52/ml. That is a significant difference and probably represents gross overpricing by Epson when compared to the same in in the 50ml P900 cartridge. For the least expensive printing, it may be better to go straight to either the P900 or Pro-1000 where their cost is 50ml@$44=$0.88/ml and 80ml@$60=$0.88/ml respectively.

Tim, there is a simple test you can do: print two copies on each printer. (Without taking the cartridges out between the two copies. for the Epson you likely get 1+1ml usage, the canon might give 5+5, or 5 + something. If it is 5+5, then it’s real 5ml / A3 sheet, I expect however it will be 5+ something ml…

You could weigh the paper first with no print, then weight it to se how much weight is added after printing. This way there is no removing of the inks.

It would be interesting to know how much gloss optimizer was used because the Epson does not use optimizer where the Canon does. Just a thought

I’ve been tracking the weight of my Canon Pro-1000 waste ink cartridge. First print of the day uses around 3-4ml for cleaning, all following prints use much less. This would be fine for me. However, without any notice the printer performs some what I imagine to be „deep cleaning“ routine where around 50ml of ink are used. I find this and the lack of any message by the printer and communication by canon explaining the necessity of such a procedure absolutely outrageous.
@FotospeedUK
@FotospeedUK Год назад
This does seem to be true on the Pro-1000, and allowed for this on the Pro-300. Going to do some more tests with more prints at least 10 on each printer. Hopefully better results. Tim

Canon is using more ink since every time you are pulling out a cartridge, in your case to weigh it, the printer triggers cleaning cycle. I would suggest to look at Red River cost of inkjet printing calculation, which would give you the cost of printing in the best case scenario. The actual cost is going to be higher than that due to cleaning cycles, since Red River calculation is based on printing 200 prints simultaneously, which is seldom the case for most of the users.

Maybe weigh and then print 10 images, then re weigh.. that should highlight any cleaning process.. great video.. looking to buy my first photo printer

The SC-P900 is more economical in the long run due to bigger cartridges (physically the same as the P700 but with more ink in them). If you buy the P700 - order a complete set of ink at the same time. After initialization there is only about 15% left in the initialization cartridges (that is actually heavier and probably containing more than the normal ones) - A LOT of ink is used to fill the hoses to the print head. From what I can remember about 30% is left in the P900 cartridges after initialization.

What you should have done is weigh the paper before and after printing to see how much ink is actually on the page.

I agree with the comments about doing multiple prints before weighing to take out the variable of putting the cartridges back in. Another question, could the use of chroma optimizer on the canon account for some of the difference, or does the Epson have some other method for managing gloss differential?

In addition to printing more test sheets I'd use a darker image, as well, for half the prints (such as a night sky) this should increase the amount of ink use.

The cleaning cycle in the Canon waste a lot of ink. You can actually see the results of a cleaning cycle on the LCD of the PRO-300.
@jtidsskids

I own a Canon Pro-10s which uses the same print head as the Prograf-300. Both are notorious for conducting a purge cycle when one or more cartridges are changed. The general recommendation is to change multiple cartridges at once i.e. all those displaying a yellow exclamation mark when the first approaches empty. The test methodology is poor : why not invest in some decent scales and weigh the paper before and after printing ? However the ink use per print is not very useful as its the frequency and ink use of purge/cleaning cycles that is of more interest to low volume home printers.

Canon in its 1st ink test uses 1.87% (5g of 287g) of ink. Epson…0.11% (1g of 863g) for its A3 print. If your weighing and wondering the stats

Perhaps you would have to do the test with 2 new machines. Weigh the new cartridges put them into the new printers & print. That would mean that both printers would run their new set up and cleaning. Then re weigh. Just a thought.

I use the pro 300. Recently I was printing in black and white for a while and the colour cartridges went down amazingly quickly although they were not being used. Whatever the Canon does when it initiates for even a B/W print it appears to waste an unacceptable amount of the ink in the colour cartridges. In terms of improving the bottom line for the manufacturer it is reminiscent of my old Epson XP-235 which eats ink like a Great White Shark eats seals.
@MrBlubb80
@MrBlubb80 Год назад
BW prints always also use Color inks independently of model or manufacturer. Having said that Canon wastes excessive amounts of ink for cleaning.

Yeah, more scientifically accurate I'd be looking at printing a larger "batch" of prints, and print to the end of the print run, replacing inks as necessary over a run of at least 50 prints. Likewise for the Pro-1000 and P900 - weigh a full set of new inks before loading in to the printers and then only weigh the inks registered as empty after the run

Unlike the Eason, the cannon has to do a purge cycle because air has entered the print head.

I'm really interested why would that purge cycle be necessary in one printer and not the other? Is there any documentation available?
