The ultimate conclusion I've come to after watching both of these videos is essentially this: Everything and anything the Disney Executives were responsible for turned out to be cheap, lazy and underwhelming. Anything the staff and day-to-day workers were involved in and could control were the highlights of everyone's trip.

That's right, and that's what the Disney bean counters are slashing throughout the parks. And they can't take criticism even internally so you get the current Parks and assaults on serious reviews of their performance by the fans.

@@hankkingsley9183 how someone articulates something is just as important as what you say in making an impact. For example, ops comment is symetical in its concepts which provides greater contrast than if they just said "execs did bad job". This can add greater appreciation in the reader. Another example, you sounds like a tool, because you are and showed us very well.

I will admit, it seems like the general gist of this take is "I have enough money that I don't really have to care about whether anything I do is a good value". The issue with the starcruiser is not just will guests have a decent/good experience, it is will they have an experience that is worth the insane amount of money they are paying for it and it seems like anyone answering yes to that question has more money than sense or is wealthy enough to be out of touch with any reasonably person's understanding of value.

Thank you for your opinion and I have def been on vacations that I didn't appreciate but the equation for value is a bit subjective bc of the quality piece of the equation. I enjoyed the quality and experience overall. I appreciate your opinion though. Thank you.

I've been on both sides of this issue, as a traveler on a tight budget, and fortunately later in life, as a traveler with little concern for the expense; and you are absolutely correct, this difference changes one's perception considerably. A budget traveler is very much attuned to the price vs value, whereas for somebody with amble funds, it's the experience itself that carries the most weight, and the cost is not really a consideration. Listening to these gentleman, it's clear they fall into the latter category.
@con-radical5481
@con-radical5481 Месяц назад
Motivations aside, it's an unbelievably weird sentiment in general, obviously it's a subjective metric. I feel like exclusivity is so rare when showing off your gawdy lifestyle is a source of income in and of itself, just the mindset that would put you in, especially with a sentimental product; though, I don't know if Disney thought it would actually work. There's just no way to have a market large enough to sustain the demand, it'd be one thing if trialed it to bring investment and treated this as a testing-phase, knowing the reception to prior Star Wars-based stuff in Disney's hands kinda fell flat, but as with the rest of it they did the minimum to keep the fans interested and the shareholders happy, and it clearly works, so I why expect something better?

Disney's "hostage pricing" is disgusting, you want a Redbull? Unless you're going to walk 2 hours to your car and drive another hour to the nearest shop you're paying $20. And its the smallest size can the 8.45 fluid ounce one.

I really appreciate how respectful you both were towards not just Jenny's review, but her as a person. I knew it would be good at the beginning when you went out of your way to get her full name right. I think your response was very measured and grounded. So many others are quick to call her either a shill or a hater without really listening to what she's saying. The Starcruiser was never a product for me, but I find it oddly fascinating as a piece of culture and a bizarre set of business decisions. It's great hearing your experience as adult fans that interacted with it in ways I hadn't heard from others (like facilitating the experience for the kids). Really, really enjoyed your perspective, but one thing I kept hearing again and again was "it was fine." Shouldn't it have been more than "fine" simply to meet the baseline of being "worth it"? It was a very expensive trip done by a company with an historic reputation of being the best at this. Anything less than "unbelievably amazing" in every category should have been unacceptable. I had my own version of this type of experience earlier this year when I took a trip to Antarctica on a small ship with National Geographic Expeditions. Like you, I spent a lot of money on a once-in-a-lifetime trip with a brand known for the highest standards. Everything on the voyage was outstanding - the itinerary, the interaction with the guides, the access to animals, the onboard programming, the onboard experience, etc. And that's the way it should have been, frankly, for what I was paying. Nothing is perfect, but when you're paying a premium amount, you deserve a premium experience. (It boggles my mind, as one example, that alcohol wasn't included at the Star Wars hotel.) I think Disney gets too much of a pass these days with their nickel-and-diming and lackluster experiences. I had a friend who recently went to Disney World with his two children and, after paying far more than he would have for a trip to Europe, his summary was also "It was fine." At some point, this is going to catch up with Disney. I see the turning point coming already.
@JustSomeBS1
@JustSomeBS1 2 месяца назад
I really appreciate your explanation here. Antarctician sounds incredible and I totally agree that when paying top dollar the entire experience should be life changing. This trip was not like anything I had ever experienced before, and I think part of my language issue (it's fine) is because I had already done a detailed review of this entire experience and I did this trip quite awhile ago compared to when I did this reaction. I still look back at this experience with fondness and I'm still very happy I did it. I totally understand your sentiments and your friends on Disney World, I enjoy Disney quite a bit so I don't sit in the same space as your friend. I appreciate what I get for the money spent when I go but I also understand the items that used to be free and now aren't which is disappointing. This experience was truly a once-in-a-lifetime trip b/c now it is closed, which I didn't know when I went.

When you mentioned the marketing and the expectation that Disney creates. I feel Disney has spent a few decades now promising to amaze you and coming in under expectations. I grew up in Anaheim and I remember when the excitement for new things had a reasonable chance of paying off. Disney promoted an upcoming daytime parade called The Lion King Celebration that became a guest favorite. It was so beloved that when it was closing, guests came just to see the last performance. Performers had tears in their eyes. Disney delivered on Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Forbidden Eye. The original Fantasmic is a magical transformation of the Rivers of America. Even Soarin over California was a love letter to California from people who grew up there. I just came back from Universal in Florida for the first time in 11 years. They set expectations with what i had heard about their recent attractions and delivered on them. Sure there is okay stuff there that reeks of the old Universal. And some of the things they are trying to reach old fashioned Disney heights and still have a little ways to go. But in the end you felt like a treasure guest. At Disney you feel like just another wallet. It hurts to say that after growing up literally in the shadow of Disneyland and going there almost weekly for my young adult life. But these days their marketing feels stunted because it has gone from pride in what they were creating to selling us a load that they created something spectacular this time just to find out it's very ordinary or worse.

It sounds like you had the issue that Jenny mentions of having spent some damn much money for this experience, that you of course gave it an OK review. You both seem embarrassed but want to justify the cost. "I was OK with that " to practically everything. If you had the same experiences as Jenny, you probably would have said, "Gee, can't wait to spend $6000 again to actually see the first night show, and have a character experience that works this time! Way to go Disney for not giving us everything the first time. Very smart way to do business!"

Sorry about the "I was ok with that", I was just expressing my opinion.

@@JustSomeBS1 Pissed, but still not hate it enough to give it negative review? I am guessing not. Gotta justify those $$$ that most people don't have. That is why it failed. It was a mediocre product for the majority of guests. It is shocking that Disney put out a product where a lot of people got put behind poles for the show. I'm sure the Disney execs knew. Disney didn't care that they made a crappy product but they didn't mind charging those $$$ for it. Like Jenny said, I'm glad it failed. I didn't have the same experience as Jenny which is why I wasn't pissed. I'm with you that it failed for good reason and that reason was justified by the number of ppl that didn't go. I also agree that accountability was probably served to Disney on this one in a sense. Will it solve the issue of crappy products and over pricing across the board I guess we will have to wait and see but I do believe they do get a lot right, whether it is value every time is personal opinion. People can have different experiences and different opinions and both be right. The world isn't black and white.

As someone who doesn't like Theme parks, I found this facinating to balance out Jenny's video. Even though I think you went too soft on Disney paywalling formerly free things, but meh. With that background, the only way i can see "it's unique" as a really convincing argument is in the trip creating a friendship. Which you obviously can't bet on. Other than that, I just ask myself what was this for? $6,000 can buy you so much stuff, so many experiences, I don't get why you would spend it on two days in a box in Florida. With a short park trip, sure, but how much would 6K buy you in pure park time if you're into that sort of thing? I don't the sort of people that spend 6K+ without a second thought would have liked the place, and for people who have to think about it, this has to compete with trips to Asia or Europe.

I totally understand your points. This was my first trip back to Disney for a long time so I was excited about the entire trip. @@JustSomeBS1 And you conveniently left out of your review that was a part of Jenny's review, was that all the stuff that was promised for Galaxy's Edge was again put behind a paywall at the Star Wars hotel for $6000. Such greedy execs! All of this should have been free in the parks, but because Disney couldn't figure out to get people to shell out thousands of dollars in the long term, besides the few suckers for 18 months, they shut it all down and now no one will get to see it.
@Mjsmecha
@Mjsmecha Месяц назад
I can get behind the idea of value being more complicated than dollars and hours. But i think that when something is a premium experience that charges way more than makes sense dollars and cents wise, you have to nail the details to make it feel special. And i think that paywalling and cheaping out on certain things completely undermines that intangible feeling of something being "worth it". Either let me splurge to do something special and get lost in an experience or nickel and dime me for a value experience. If disney wants it both ways i can get better value elsewhere.

I do think your review is valid; but you are both in a minority of the population: BIG Star Wars fans who can afford it. One who hasn’t been to WDW or “Star Wars land” before and decided to go big on the whole package. And the other determined to be the most awesome uncle ever who succeeded because the nieces had a great time. And even you kinda admit you probably wouldn’t do it again if it had stayed open. Maybe you would have eventually if either of you had more children in your life who would have enjoyed it; but that might have happened many years from now and “the Star Wars Hotel” didn’t have time to wait for you to get more children to treat this to. The point is, DIsney pretty quickly ran through your minority and then, they had no more customers for it. That’s why it failed; and that was Jenny’s point. Jenny’s suggestion for a possible “Star Wars” dinner theater experience might work. If an abbreviated dinner version of this game/show were sold for about $500 a person and my nephew was still a big Star Wars fan in a few years (He is currently a big Star Wars fan; but he’s only 5 now; and I wouldn’t spend that on one show for him at this age,) I MIGHT consider being a “most awesome aunt ever” and consider treating both him and his sister to it. But more than $500 (which would be actually higher than the $2 a minute rate for say a 3 hour dinner theater experience) I wouldn’t go for.

My niece was one of the original cast members and she stated that they were booked out from day 1 to the last day many months in advance. It wasn't for lack of customers, but the sheer amount of customer complaints. They tried to make things better by reducing bookings, hoping to give employees more time to recharge and to keep the place running at HIGH END standards instead of paying better wages and upgrading lacking components. It got so bad Iger and executives attended a one day experience and upon experiencing the morose of the patrons... they decided it was not fixable. Just think about it...Have you seen any business other than the DMV shut down or reduce hours of operation when they have a daily line of paying customers?

Its actually insane the lengths people go to justify spending money on something way overpriced and that closed because executives saw all the problems and decided it was unfixable. Even with all that, these shills would still stand on business and say "it was worth it" straight to your face. If it looks like shit and it smells like shit, its probably shit, but these two (any many others) would still eat it.

@@JustSomeBS1 The people who went on this experience were an audience meeting the show not just halfway, but 95% of the way there. When such a person says, "It was fine ..." I read it as, "It really wasn't." It is an enlightened attitude to judge an experience by its personal highlights (such as escaping into a quiet outdoor space, or to wander around after hours), yet I can vibe with someone who stretched their budget to go there and every "It was fine .." turned into an electric shock for them.

Ray, I totally understand. I know the experience I had and like I stated at the beginning of this podcast episode it was my first time back to Disney since I was 11 which was already exciting and that excitement could have played into my overall experience. I wanted to have my friend on as well b/c he goes to Disney often so I wanted to balance out my personal experience with someone who understands "Disney" expectations. I know what I liked on the trip and the enjoyment I found. I totally understand if ppl want to discount the experience I had even if they didn't go. Thank you again for the feedback though.

People are being ridiculously critical of you in these comments, acting like you were bragging about being rich and basically set your money on fire. I think was a good take and honestly as someone who loved Jenny’s video it’s interesting to see a video from someone who the experience really worked for but wasn’t paid off by Disney to say that it was good. I took you guys saying “it was fine” as in that thing didn’t work for her but it did work for you guys so it didn’t even register to think about it because it just worked, which is not a bad thing. Thought this was a good supplemental to Jenny's epic vid. Appreciated you both brought counterpoints from your experience, while also acknowledging how her particular experience problems (effed up app/torrential rain/THE POLE) would be immediate sucks if they'd've happened to you. Best thing I got from this was how obvious the friendship the two of you have and it was this experience that made it happen. Great camaraderie! I grew up going to Disneyland yearly and recently went back after a long hiatus: while some of the 'magic' is still there, a lot isn't, which is a shame. Park operators really should be keeping that in mind for the future.

I know it's gone now so this is no longer an issue. However, could you imagine the experience for those who just bought the base ticket for the park, was excited to ride one of the "Star Wars" rides, getting at least a bit annoyed with everyone using the line bypasses on other rides, finally getting to the "Star Wars" area, and then seeing it get flooded with people from the hotel who *all* have the line bypass? So they have the ones in the park *and* this whole other group from the hotel all specifically packing those rides? It must have been maddening.
@JustSomeBS1
@JustSomeBS1 2 месяца назад
I can totally appreciate that but it wasn't a mass group that all stayed together and got on the rides together. When the hotel guests got to the park we all went out different directions. We also had time slots for going to the park. I would agree it would be frustrating if your scenario happened

Good commentary on the video. I will always take value into the equation. I can go to the Phillipenes or Vietnam or Mexico and stay in Hostels for $20-35 a night, and spend $2000 for two (for two weeks). That's a far better experience than going and getting my wallet raped by Disney for a 2 day "experience". These two are from NY and used to paying $15 a drink on average so I think the money situation is a little different for them compared to the average person.

You hit the jest of it right from the get go. You said you enjoyed it, but you mentally prepared yourself. You put yourself in a mind frame that the money was not going to be well spent. Me and my friend worked on the hotel during construction. We joked at how small the rooms were compared to a normal hotel room. We compared square footage to half of what a normal room would be. But its literally triple the cost. Even in early construction we didn't see how they were going to make money on it.

Theme parks are becoming outdated. People are not going to movies, anymore. Crowds are becoming morbidly obese. The divide between the rich and the poor is increasing. The planet is heating up. Disney needs to create a new entertainment format. You think it was a failure. It was a one in a series of prototypes, and advanced a whole range of experiences. Disney can do anything they want. They have transcended bigger obstacles. The problem with the critics is a lack of imagination. Here's a good opportunity to sell them some.

I really enjoyed this. Its lovely seeing a bit of bromance and people sharing their experience. To be honest, I kind of want to see the hotel if they retool it a little bit. I don't know how the bridge experience played out, but I feel there is a missed opportunity to have multiple wargame rooms throughout the experience to with adult and children age groups and maybe mixed to get that connectivity with your crew. Maybe they could retool engineering and the other bit crap elements to be a bit more engaging, or relegate those to the kid science lab stuff as a distraction. I find the idea of the hotel fascinating, and I like your take on the value of the experience for the dollars spent. In some ways it has to be expensive or it would be saturated with guests because it was one of a kind... although I don't know if you can charge such high prices during the alpha phase of the experience, and I suspect thats what killed interest Anyway, very cool video. I'd subscribe for more.

I would be surprised if you had more pros than cons based on everything you guys said and yet at the conclusion you guys said you liked it..? I was so confused! You guys did seem to say that family and friends being there was a huge plus for you guys but that's really separate from the experience itself... and not everyone that goes is going to be with a big group of family or friends. I've never been, but even from what I could see it looked so small compared to what I expected. From the beginning media it looked small, but they were hyping it as something it clearly was not. Not even with their best visual attempts at representing it as the hype they pushed. Anyway, f*3k Disney. I mean there is a lot to love especially in their history. They've had a huge impact on American culture and I respect that. But this was an obvious load of bs from the get go.
