I compare two pieces of 3D software. They are not very similar.

Just adding in my 2 cent. As an industrial designer, i do alot of product design. For that purpose i uses Rhino to quickly build prototypes, then i would use another software call Keyshot to add material, textures and render. Keyshot also is able to do simple animation ( those that you can see in product videos like product spin, exploded view, speed curve and so on. while Blender on the other hand, I uses it only when i needed to do liquid simulations, object properties like to be able to bounce, squishy, cloth like etc for animation. HOWEVER, sometime i use Blender to sculpt organic shapes which then later i import into Rhino to edit. File conversion I use between these two software is STEP file format. Hope this helps some people looking for answers.

Hello, just a question : how do you do to export and import STEP files within Blender ?

I do the same procedure, also to make organic sculptures I use T-Spline in rhino

Yeah keyshot is definitely worth a mention. Chip walters just did a video 2 weeks ago which begs the question, can Blender replace Keyshot. The obvious benefit being the price. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-i6Iuc8PfnWc.html

Thank you for this vid, I needed this! One note about commands: Rhino has to be the absolute fastest program to model in! You can fully customize the commands in Rhino under File>Properties>Aliases. For example the default command line for extruding a surface is "extrudesrf", which is a pain to have to type out each time, but you can customize it to be a single letter, like "e". You can even customize your mouse buttons to execute commands (like setting the scroll wheel button to "zoomselected"). Hope that helps

This is good info. You can use abbreviations of the commands without setting this up, just start typing the first few letters, but the issue is that which command corresponds to which abbreviations changes based on what you've used recently.

Blender has come a long way in many ways including with those geometry nodes. I think blender is all about illustration and art while Rhino is about engineering. Hence blender is all about mesh manipulation and presentation with very little focus on solids while Rhino is all about parameter driven design and technical drawings. Blender also has some advanced stuff with the Animation Nodes, but it is not part of Blender official. I think Blender's biggest strength is it's cutomisability and it's huge array of plugins on the market. Epic games (Fortnite etc), Adobe, and other top brands contribute millions to the Blender foundation and it shows. It's moving at the speed of light. The new asset Browser in version 3.0 is dope. Blender is for telling stories - be that with a simple 2D rendering or a full-scale animation short film. I think Rhino and Blender make a good team. If an industrial designer or architect designs something for real-world production in Rhino, Blender can tell the story of that design to help it get implemented in the real world.

You're spot on about Rhino being more for manufacturing a product, (rapid prototyping for instance). I wanted to learn it for that reason. I was fortunate to take a 7 week course in Rhino several years ago. Based on what the instructor told us, Rhino came primarily from the automobile industry because of the precision it could make subtle compound curves etc. It is mainly used in live action for set extensions. I had Lightwave 7.5 ages ago and Blender is more like that where you are able to do animation, texturing, camera lens settings and so on. I just got Blender and look forward to playing with it soon.

Do you also have to fidle around a lot with supporting loops in Rinho to get the edge you want? Damn I hate that in Blender!

So suppose I want to programmatically generate perfect aircraft panel shapes which all intersect and touch and are then exported out after modelling in some format, would Rhino be a good place to do initial modelling of say, an accurate aircraft fusellage and cockpit, and then do the fine work of texturing and adjusting the model, and low-poly and mid-poly retopo, in other tools, one of which might be blender? Ie, would Rhino be a cool place to generate swoopy nurb driven shapes? I'm relatively new to Blender and finding the lack of a "corel draw like bezier curve model" painful.

the main difference between rhino and blender is rhino knows what its doing, blender cant make up its mind what it wants to do, blender even wanted to be a nurbs modeller but as can be seen from its garbage implementation of nurbs it gave that up and has never returned to it, maybe if blender gets its act together and stops trying to become the industry standard which is what all the fanboys and fanboy content creators seem to think it is, then maybe it'll find a place in the industry until then its always going to be the program that does things differently for the sake of doing things differently.

I am a Rhino user and I see Blender could be an interesting tool to try. But as you said blender is for "animation" so if I dont care about animation, I should not try it? Architecture is my profession btw.

Between the two, you'd be better served by Rhino. Picking up some AutoCAD and Revit skills, especially the latter, couldn't hurt either.

I'm familiar with Rhino, but the default rendering is not so good and I'm not using it much. Could Blender be used as an adition to Rhino specificly for the rendering part? Also file type wise? Or is that not a logical thing to do and am I better of with a render plugin/app for Rhino or some other program? Sorry if I ask questions you covered in your video, I didn't watch the whole vid.
@ZimmermanStudios
@ZimmermanStudios 5 лет назад
I've used Blender to render things I've made in Rhino before. It's definitely not seamless; materials will not be transferred over, and you'll be manipulating a messy mesh approximation of your geometry instead of a clean NURBS model. My advice would be to only export to .stl and render in Blender once you are for sure done with the geometry, because without retopologizing from scratch in Blender, your .stl will be impossible to work with.
@hectororestes2752

Rhino 5 built in rendering sucked, but rhino 6 has a better one. You can use other rendering programs inside rhino, like V-Ray, which is excelent IMO, but its expensive. There might be other renders that are free, like Radeon pro Renderee, but in rhino it requires you to have an AMD gpu.
