Always preferred the S3 for the interior, but the lack of side support is really bloody annoying, even with the upgraded seats. Now I'd take the 7.5R without question with the new cockpit. Also those suede looking seats look incredible. Great review 👍🏼

Both cars are fabulous examples of true sports car driving. The Golf R seems to involve the driver a little more because of the louder exhaust and seats. The S-3 will appeal to the older driver who wants a cachet brand and is moving upward toward a career. They're both fine cars with their own dna and brand identity. It's more of a matter of personal preference with these models, because their quality and performance will never disappoint the driver. Good review and video.

We have an old Renault Laguna Diesel from 2008 Euro4. So with the new Diesel Scrappage scheme that both Audi and VW are offering as an incentive, we can still get the normal dealer discount and another £4000 on top of the dealer discount, off either a Golf R or S3, this means that we could now get a peasant specced Golf R 5dr for a touch under £26K or an Audi S3 for around £27K, which is nearly £8K discount! This has to be a fantastic deal on either car. On a side note, the Audi scrappage deal and discounts are even bigger for A4's, so with all the discounts and Scrappage allowance we could even get an £50K S4 for only £36K. A £14K discount is pretty amazing.

The audi sounds much better! I think vw did it on purpose to make the difference between the normal exhaust and akrapovic exhaust seem more significant 😅

I'm pretty sure that the torque peak isn't at the max rev that's why it's changing up as you perceive early. It's giving the max performance.

Hi mate ur vids are getting better and better, my previous car was a 2016 golf r & i have recently upgraded to a 2017 audi s3 and i can say its in a different league to the golf r in terms of build quality the interior of the golf felt bit cheap and plasticky and it is classed as a boy racer car , where as the audi is more luxurious and more classy and elegant and its a real sleeper as not many people will know the difference between a s3 and a normal A3 where as the golf does stand out more , i guess if ur under 30 go for the golf , and over 30 take the Audi

very good vids pal. You do it in a good way. Got mk7 r. with Miltek exhuast. prets, limestone grey with oetinger rear spoiler and JB4 . Dino run was an extra 54 bhp and an extra 74 troques. Not bad for a 500 qid plug in. Want more now but will wait till waranty expires in 6 months. Keep up the good work. All the best . Ginger

Man, I am literally being tortured by the fact that I can't afford the new R. I enjoyed this video, despite the fact that I can't get the same options here in the US; love the R rims and color in the UK version. The video in general gives a VERY nice sampling of the R's cabin sound, and I love the sense of the speed in front windows as the camera points at your face. The S3 clips are very nice as well. If I can't afford the R here, I certainly wont be able to afford the Audi - yet it's nice to see the cabin differences. The commentary from both of you was very enjoyable. Either way, thanks for taking me to a nice fantasy world for a few minutes! I currently drive a DSG 2011 GTI right now, and with fairly low mileage, this video's inspired me to take it out and scare the old people in town :)

That's exactly how you run in a new car...nice and hard for the first 200 miles to make sure those piston rings seal properly...which in turn produces a more powerful engine...drop the oil and change the oil filter...and carry on driving that car like it was stolen. They are very subtle changes but it looks a little more aggressive then the previous one. At times you can be fooled that the mk7 r was just a regular golf but this one, it's very blatant tbf. The changes they have made with the face of the s3 (grill/bumper) was hard to top. If I'm honest I wouldn't really mind either of these two cars as they're pretty much brilliant. Before I would've instantly said s3 but now I'm not too sure. Recently I've had a bad experience with Audi but I doubt it will put me off ever getting another Audi in the future. Keep smashing it with the videos my brother.

Your reviews of the Audi S3 and Golf R 7.5 are very good. The only suggestion is to have the in car microphone closer to your mouth. Outside the cars sound is great, but in car requires putting the volume way up to hear what you are saying. Keep doing everything else the same. Good differentiation from other videos by others. As you say, we all can get the specs, but the actual drive and comparisons between brands are your greatest value for us. Thanks

Slms- i have 2015 s3 sedan revo stage 2 and my best friend has golf 7r with exactly the same mods- he always says the s3 is louder, especially the pops on upshift. I really like the facelift crackle on downshift. These cars move properly with stAge 2(we have cooler intake downpipe software tcu tune 034 dogbone vidi p3 gauge and H&R springs) i have 20inch OZ rims on my car. We def getting ready for stage 3! Really enjoyed the video- from south africa

I've a new 3 Door 7.5 Golf R DSG on order. Lapiz blue with black Pretorias. Just one small piece of constructive criticism for you. Can you be smoother with your panning shots when you're moving about? The movement kinda ruins the enjoyment.

I had two Audi's and I drive a vw now. Honestly the VW feels better in the corners. Your right, it feels more reassuring. Audi gave me the feeling like I'm at the limit all the time. VW never gives me that feeling. Weird but it's true

I was looking to purchase a Golf R Wolfsburg (in Australia is a fully loaded R) after watching your vid but VW had significant delays which forced me elsewhere. This made me chose the S3 instead (White, Black Pack, 19' wheels and Magnetic Ride).... ......and I am glad I did, as it is sensational. Thanks for the review. If you every get around to chipping your S3, I would be keen to know the difference and best options!

Great video guys, very honest and true. I've tried both, love the Audis interior more, but preferred the R on the road, it feels more nibble and fun! but the new Cupra R feels better again! and cheaper than both. I think the best middle ground is the Golf, but thats just my opinion. Cheers for the reviews!

The new R looks much better than the older one with the simple updates. Even better looking than the S3. Blue R would've looked better tho. Nice vid.

S3 still wins for me between the S3 and R. virtual cockpit looks much better than the one in R...can't believe both cars have keys though.....VAG need to introduce keyless go as standard on these cars. good comparison video overall. Im sure Mo will enjoy the R!

Maybe the sound of the Golf R increases after a few thousand kilometers. I noticed that on my pre Facelift S3.

apart from noice reduction,i think the insulation under the hood will affect over time the hoods colour because of the extra heat.so make sure u ask an expert.

Great video. One of the reasons it inspired me to do a video of the mk7 vs a mk7.5.

I recently picked up a 2019 Golf R Special Edition (Australia-specific limited run of 400), with Akrapovic exhaust, Pretorias, Dynaudio, and 340mm brakes. I also looked at the S3, the Focus Rs, and the i30N. I really don't like the image of BMWs so the 135i and M140i weren't on the table. The S3 was way more expensive here in Oz; an equivalent used 2019 S3 would have been about $10k more than a Golf R. The RS was fast and fun but not very refined; it felt and looked like what a 13 year old boy thinks a hot hatch should be. The i30N was good fun, but not as quick as the Golf, and felt like more of a GTI rival. Yes, some rivals do some things better than the Golf R. But none of them do EVERYTHING as well as the Golf does. It's pretty much all the car you will ever need. Stupidly quick, classless, fun when you want it to be, quiet when you don't, practical, safe, well built, well equipped, and equally at home outside a casino as it is outside a school.

If you want more intake noise you should also take off the weather strip (or whatever they call it, you can find it on google)! It makes a bigger difference than the hood insulation.

looks nice with the pretoria wheels and in a proper grey, that limestone looked brown in some lights. the front of the old one looked more aggressive tho with the double u drl's. hopefully they smash out some £200 a month lease deals so i can jump back in one :)

Both are great cars... maybe the golf owner coulda waited a week or 2 for the performance pack to be released... which gives a stunning akrapovich exhaust system. But still great none the less. Nice rides lads.

TR Hamza, I'm not sure if it is the same on the S3, but with the Golf R you can't rev with the valves open. When you put it in neutral or park it automatically closes the valves, so revs don't sound as good on the R. I have found a way to rev with the valves open, but it only works for about 1 second, enough to get one rev in though

I really hope we get option of those suede/cloth seats in MK7.5 R in Canada. And a sunroof option please! MK7 was all leather, no roof. The 7.5 refresh looks best on the R IMO. Those new grills and headlights look sharp! I own a 2015 MK7 GTI now.

The S3 sounds so much better from this comparison. Never been a big fan of the Golf R's, they just look a bit too subtle. Additionally I think you should have some background music when showing the panning shots. Keep up the good content :D

Great vid, mate. Golf R is a fine car, I like it - just think that the squarish surround for the virtual cockpit makes it a bit 70s looking - more curves needed perhaps. BTW, with the temperatures warming up, my S3 is starting to sound even more WOW!! Is yours too?? All the best old pal!!
