The 90's versions just hit harder. The music, the the animation, the designs, colours, sound effects, they all feel heavier and make the attacks look way cooler. I know things are different now, but it's a shame that they made Sailor Moon look like Pretty Cure even if they are from the same studio.
Dunno, but I don't like new generation animes. Very artificial and PC made. Much more labor in the 90s, hand drawn every frame, masterpiece musics. I absolutely love the old.
I really love how Mercury's attack looked in the 90's version. The size of the harp makes it look more realistic, Mercury's sitting pose makes it look more like she's playing it, and near the end of her attack we can actually hear the harp!
Imo Eternal is visually better but the 90's one is more "fitting" because unlike Mars who actually shoots an arrow or Venus who throws a giant heart/kiss, Mercury's harp is entirely redundant outside aesthetics.
Everyone has mentioned great points about 90s art style, colors, choreo and sfx. But another thing is that their voice actors also feels more powerful. They understood their powers and attacks, and stressed on the impactful parts to make the attack really punch. The elegance in Mercury's "Rhapsody", the grit and dynamic added into the "Mars!", "Evolution", "Shock!", "Shaking!" are so satisfying to the ear. In the new version, it feels like they're just screaming it out for the sake of it, without really paying attention to what the spells mean.
And the Dead scream!!!! So much different! In the 90s version the voice actor don’t just use cute voice they sounds like they generated all the power from the body to say the line and have a better flow not just saying the line with a cute voice but no flow in in, for example, (Mars… flameeeee…. Sniperrrrahhh…) but the new one is like (Mars… flame Sniper)… like no soul in the line…
I generally liked the 90s ones better. The detail of hand drawn animation makes it raw and cool. CGI while impressive is common and it didn't have the oomph the 90s versions did.
90s Uranus forever. No one can compare to that voice, but 2021 visual is amazing. 2021 Venus is very cute with that giggle. Overall they did a good job picking the voice actors.
The 90s versions have extremely strong choreography and serious weight to their movement. They obviously benefit from being stock footage assigned to the best sakuga animators on staff, but the analog colors and the more realistic anatomy of 90s character designs emphasize the weight of every movement. The 2021 versions are… not bad, but they follow the modern style of having a lot of superfluous movement, which makes the whole thing less impactful and makes it feel more like random flailing around than the buildup to a power being unleashed. Usagi’s attacks and transformations also had this issue in the original series, and for that they are imo a lot less memorable than anyone else’s.
Exactly! It's an issue of timing. Timing is vital to good animation, and it's why the 2021 version feels awkward and stilted compared to the original. The movements in the original fluctuate greatly from slow and graceful to sharp and fast, at all the right moments to really create a sense of control and power. In the 2021 version, it feels like the characters are just going through all the motions without much regard to timing, so we don't "feel" their movements in the same way. It's just mediocre animation.
@@kikiseo In the 90's they really understood anticipation taking several drawing before the action. Venus for example had 8 drawings before extending her arm as well as an extreme where as the new one has 2 and looked very choppy. Also the new one lacked understanding of spacial relationship. The Jupiter spin when she says "evolution" for example in the new one it looks like she's flipping from left to right instead of a spin due to the fact that they didn't have a good drawing of her leg in the back position. Where as the 90s had great line of action and described the spacial relationship perfectly.
I agree, I have problems with every single one the remake just looks awful especially on sailor Uranus cause she’s just awful. I can see problems with all the other Sarah, Larry guardians, Jupiter, Venus, mercury, mars and Neptune and Pluto but I feel like Mercury is my favorite because she plays a very lovely instrument and I really like how kind and smart she is. she just makes me happy.
@@MacaTooni Agreed completely. I rewatched Venus's attacks on slow just to see where the difference is. The 90's Venus really takes time to pull back her arm, like a baseball pitcher winding up before throwing. She's pulling back and bracing herself for the throw. Then, finally, she unleashes all the energy and swings her arm out. 2021 Venus just brings her arm back and swings it outwards. Additionally, 90's Venus has movement in her lower half throughout the whole thing. It shows she's really throwing her upper body weight. 2021 Venus's lower half doesn't move once her left leg comes down. As a result, her throw looks stiff, unnatural, and less powerful.
The 90's versions had so much weight and depth. The first thing I noticed was how shiny everything looks in the 90's version, and I mean that as a good thing- the water is so dark that the highlights sparkle, y'know like _light reflecting on water?_ Their tiaras too look like gold- an actual metal with _weight_ and _depth_ and _different color values-_ as opposed to gold-colored plastic. In the 90's version, Venus' lips didn't just sparkle for no reason; she was clearly wearing lipstick or gloss that shimmered in the light, something that is conspicuously absent in the new version. There was so much love and attention put into every detail of the 90's version. The new one looks like it was drawn by a teenager who's finally starting to get the hang of digital art. It's not _bad,_ they've got all the basics down, but they don't understand things like line weight or temperature or values yet and that makes their art just more generic anime filler that gets lost in the deviantArt archives.
This is a perfect description, exactly how I see it. The new ones look flat and oversaturated. I would never have gotten into Sailor Moon if the newer one was all we had. Thankfully the 90s one exists and is my favorite thing in the world 🥰
@@Sungod77777 how does a show outsell do people buy it or something Also it makes sense anyways, who wouldn’t want to watch the prettier looking sailor moon over a 90’s show that probably has bad animation sometimes There are people who haven’t even watched the original anyways, and even I haven’t watched crystal yet I do plan on watching it though, and seeing which one is better
It's literally the same woman who worked on the 90's version who did the Eternal movies lol thus your shallow criticisms are invalid. Sounds to me like you are being contrarian because you don't like Crystal in general.
@@Kfowlkes09 Dude, calm down. The two versions look significantly different, OP just described how and stated a preference. It was spot on and I agree. No one is obligated to like either version and everyone doesn't have to share your opinion. Get over yourself.
@@PrimeroJinJusuke Even with the pitch up, one of my issues with Crystal overall is how flat the delivery is. Not even talking about stuff like Rei being not a hot head etc. The girls in general are less emotional, even taking into account changes in preferences over time. They at least have a bit more emotion in the 90s Vis Media redub, but Stephanie Sheh's Sailor Moon is still painfully flat. The others depend on the episode.
@@amandaslough125 This is true, because the voice actresses now, except for Kotono, are all new and younger. Kotono nails the Usagi of the comics REALLY well, Usagi is ditsy and stuff in the Dark Kingdom arc, but after the crap with Metalia, and the stuff in the black moon arc, she grows up and realizes that she has to be responsible as the future Neo Queen Serenity. I hate young VAs so much, they have no emotion because they all go to the same VA schools and learn the same crap, and dont learn to speak with emotion.
it has. just the beginnning is another. the rest is the SFX fropm the 90´s. just awful edited to fit to this god awful long and never ending attack animtaion
Perfect example of quality vs. quantity. The new version adds so much more flair but comes out lifeless in the end. The 90s has the punch and excitement you want to feel in these strong attacks.
Yeah but Tori was being stingy with the money and 90s sailor moon had so much budget and generated so much money but crystal on the other hand didn't have that much I prefer SMC because I could understand the story in a short amount of episodes and the animation was good for me but the 90s version did do better in many other ways except the agegap ofc
Someone clearly favored Uranus' new attack concept at this studio.. hers looks to have had the most effort put into it. I like it. Having said that, I just adore the simplicity of the 90s attacks. They weren't overly flashy and got the point across.
World Shaking is hands down the best attack in the Sailor Moon Universe so it was cool to see it redesigned in such an awesome way! I just really adore the sound effects of the 90s and wish they kept that part of it
I have so much to say about everyone of their new design attacks until i saw Uranus, really an update, also Pluto (though something at the end swirl and background can be improve)
Everything about the 90s version is just so much note superior. The thoughtful subtleties of the posing for each Senchi, the powerful line deliveries, the MUSIC. Uranus and Neptune's just don't HIT without the violins in the background. There's just less love and care in the more recent ones. Don't get me wrong, the art is beautiful but there's just so much more charisma in the originals.
I personally really liked the Outer Senshi's old theme. The violin playing in the background just made them so much more epic, and I used to rewatch their transformations because of it.
The music and sound effects, plus the voice acing in the 90s version would FOREVER be the best for me. Maybe it's partially due to nostalgia, but it just has that depth and touch that just really hits different...
While I have a great deal of nostalgia for the 90s attack animations, I must say that quite a few of the remake’s ones look really cool. Especially Uranus world shaking. I also find it really interesting how much the animators decided to deviate for Mercury aqua rhapsody.
Finally someone said it!!! And the way 90s Mercury pronounced the last syllable of Rhapsody (that short shriek or shrill or whatever you want to call it) still gives me chills until this day!
@@Starlighthoneymoon They are not copies! As the 90's anime was very special for the fans, the creators of the animation wanted to make references and tributes to the old attack
It does not make sense though. See how she already disrupts the ground upon summoning the orb, but then the ground looks just fine right before she thrusts it to the ground. smh.
i think the thing that bothers me the absolute most about the remake is the color design. the old colors were rich and harmonious, and the designers really made certain elements pop (ex they use an off white for their costumes, which makes the sparkle effects seem brighter by comparison). even the shadows are colored carefully, (ex using shades of blue on the white parts of the outfit, and more pink shades on their skin). the new colors are SO overexposed, looking very washed out, and dont go together as well, almost as if rather than creating a pallet they just picked each color straight from the paint tube. the shots dont draw the eye any which way and are very busy. the way theyre all lit looks like it was shot in broad daylight, as compared to the other-worldy feel of OG. shadows almost exclusively look like half opacity black.
i do love and favor the very thick and rich color palletes the 90’s version has, rather than the bright bleach pallete. but ill really like to appreciate both versions
I absolutely agree. Also the line art of the 90s version, the dynamic of every single line is outstanding. To me the “new” version feels like it was poorly traced, just a faded and cheap copy of the original. 90s version is a masterpiece in every aspect, voicing, music, color, line art, special effects, lighting, animation and of course the choreography of every single transformation and attack is supreme.
The problem here is, that the Crystal version was intented to be both visually and from a storytelling point closer to the original. Hence, the faded colours and exaggerated long limbs that are Takeuchi-san's trademark
@@st8ofmind325 yup, but I don't a problem admitting if newer things are better either. Wouldn't want to return to the oldest Nokia phones, for example 😄
@@st8ofmind325 never but i would be lying if i said that i loved to watch the new series a month ago more than the 300 eps from 90s. was the complete opposite. i rewatched all the 300s again and none of the new one cuz kinda doesnt feel appealing to me. i dont understand why but it is what it is. nonetheless i can tell they made a good job from the youtube cuts
When I saw that “world shaking” I almost stood up on my feet. Uranus has always been Bae. But it was also nice to see sailor Saturn do her little thing too 🙈
Uranus looks "wrong" imho. See how she disrupts the ground upon summoning the orb? But look the ground is again OK right before she thrusts the orb unto it. Saturn? Where? Didn't see it.
Thsi video made me realize athe problem with the new animations : they're too busy making everything pretty and girly. For example, they add unnecessary cuts to the faces. In Neptune's attack, after she throws her attack I believe, they cut to her face for no reason? It slows the whole animation in a way. The 90s version is generally more snappy with its actions, I really appreciate it!
Im more of the 90s side as to me the art and style had more class. Sure the current versions have more flair but they lack something like the energy that each scout put into the attacks. An example of this is Jupiter's Oak evolution with the presentation and grace of the 90s spin to the current one.
I really respect how they kept a nod back to the original 90s animations in the new ones, from the opening hand movements, even reproducing the wind up movements nearly exactly in some cases (Neptune's Deep Submerging and Pluto's Dead Scream were almost identical). But I still find the 90s ones better. From the multiple hearts in Venus' Love & Beauty Shock to the replay effect with Mars' Flame Sniper, they dropped these effects on the remake and I feel it sort of reduced the impact.
