I have a 30 year old Silva Ranger. Measures in Mils. Kept it from when I served in the Reserves in Canada. Shame the models commonly available in North America now are all made in China and no longer in Scandinavia.

I just need a compass that is accurate and reliable enough to tell me true NORTH all the time. Please recommend me a quality brand, maybe a link to a product. Thank you

I have a mid eighties era Silva Ranger Type 15 large baseplate/mirror compass. It is in 2 degree increments and has a fine adjustable declination. I used it in the mid eighties in Boy Scout high adventure programs, two summers at Philmont including on summer on Philmont staff. It's still going strong, the only thing about it is the glow in the dark "cat eyes" paint is faded, although it still glows at night just not as good as it once glowed. I'm in the market for a new similar serious land nav type compass, preferably one with 1 degree increments and of course fresh phosphorus paint. But I read Silva manufactures their current compasses in communist CHINA now. Mine was manufactured in SWEDEN in the eighties. With the way communist China has treated the USA and the West generally, with COVID-19 and other stuff, I decided to bypass new Silva compass purchases. No way is my money going to the Chicoms. It's a shame because Silva compasses were the BEST at one time.
