@@toyotacamry1239 I worked on it 3 different days. First day removing everything up to the timing cover (2-3 hours) - Second day removing timing covers, cam covers, and head, then cleaning all of the parts (3-4 hours) - Third day was reassembly, I took my time to get it right. Hi. Are you a total novice on engine repair/car maintenance or do you have some experience?
@caseypage2

@@ingalway I just watch youtube and figure out how to repair stuff myself. I've changed water pumps, starters, alternators, motor mounts, ujoints, shocks/struts, ball joints, etc... but I've never torn an engine down like that before. If I was a total novice having never changed any parts on a car, I don't know if I'd try this myself.

These guys are great and very helpful. Couple notes for newbies... Get a fel pro gasket kit from O'Reilly. $200? Get new head bolts. $50 Get new timing chain tensioner. $50 Get coolant, 2 gallons Get oil Might want to replace water pump at the same time $320 from stealership. Local stealership wanted $5k+ to do this job. Most shops just wouldn't do it, or wanted to replace entire engine. I did it because of an error code for misfire on cylinder 1. Check Chris Fix video on how to diagnose if you have coolant leak. After I replaced head gasket I had P0016 error because timing chain jumped. Sounded fine, but code kept coming back. Realized I should have replaced the tensioner after rewatching this video. Was able to move chain by loosening cams and moving chain one link. Replaced tensioner. Problem appears to be solved. Hope it helps.

@alnascar97

I had to remove the timing chain cover. The repair manual helps allot as it states clearly to rotate Engine counter clockwise and also has measurements to check chain wear from stretching. The other point not stated in any videos is the painted chain links only line up every 70 crankshaft revolutions. So although it may appear like the chain marks are off it takes many turns to bring the painted links back to the starting point

Great video! Gave me the confidence that I could do it. Some things I wish this video mentioned. 1. DO NOT MIX UP THE ROCKERS/STEM CAPS/HYDRAULIC LASH ADJUSTERS!!! Keep them all labeled and return them to the same spot you remove them from, in the head, on the valve after machine shop, and do the same with your head bolts if you decide to reuse them. Especially in high mileage engines those stem caps and rockers wear into their spot and become specific. "might" not work best in a different spot if the valve clearance is too much off. It will still run but you might have a slight clacking or ticking sound when its all done.
@JohnDiMartino
@JohnDiMartino 2 года назад
That’s standard engine disassembly protocol…. probably why it wasn’t mentioned. If your a beginner,the factory service manual and read8ng the areas you will to working can be worth it’s weight in gold . For engines we don’t do a lot of simply use cardboard box scraps and a black sharpie to mark and place bolts,tubes,pushrods and use egg cartons for the rockers and valve poppets,
@kalinovskiy
@kalinovskiy 2 года назад
@@JohnDiMartino You are right, I should have totally read the shop manual before. I disassembled after watching this video thinking that looked easy enough, then realized that I had too many questions this video wasn't giving me answers to, so that is when I read the shop manual. I reassembled after reading. I mean it works and drives great but there is a very faint click/clack that mostly goes away when the engine heats up. Don't feel like taking things apart again to fix that, so it will have to do.

Guys be careful!!! I own a shop, a hoist and tools better than the one he recommends and trust me he’s skipping steps that are obvious steps for him but not for DIYers. It takes a lot longer than it seems and is trickier than it seems. Another tip: keep nuts, bolts and small pieces in marked cans or cups and save yourself hours. Also wear gloves so that those stupid hose clamps don’t carve your hands and fingers.

This is great video, but you’re right. There are several I noted after doing this as a newbie: the engine mount, he starts on the engine mount bracket** but never shows or instructs to put the mounting block back on. Silicone on the timing chain cover… don’t fucking do what I did and follow this video before having the timing chain done. They assume your timing chain will just line up on those marks, but never offer up “if it doesn’t, do X. For anyone struggling with getting that to align, just loosen the 12mm bolt with the paper towel holding the cam in place and then take a 14mm and slightly turn until the pulley marks/ top dead center merry up with the chain markings. As a result the silicone dried on my timing chain cover and I had to scrape it all off and start again- what a pita. There were definitely a lot of gotchas. They said silicone getting into bolt holes don’t matter, not true if it dries before you get your bolts in- it makes it a pain to get bolts into bolt holes with dry silicon. I don’t think they went over exhaust gasket when reassembling the manifold. I forgot it. A lot of good stuff in this video- between this video and several others I got through it and the enginer started. Just wanted to provide some fair warning to anyone trying to tackle.

I added to the beer and pizza fund! This awesome video walked me through the whole process of replacing my head gasket in my 2011 Prius. One thing I would definitely add to this video is that you want to make sure to clean the egr pipe, egr cooler and intake manifold. I feel like those parts being gunned up are what is causing these things to blow. Adding an oil catch can solves the gum up issue from what I have read, so I went ahead and added one of those as well by following the nutz about bolts tutorial. Thanks again guys!

They replaced my Prius head gasket and were extremely fast! I was reluctant because I thought the noise could be due to a combination of spark plug/ ignition coil/ and dirty EGR. After txting their number for advice they said it’s the head gasket, without any hesitation. I took it into their shop and sure enough, head gasket was shot and leaking coolant. So if you’re a Prius owner, the moment you start noticing a loss of coolant and hear an occasional engine knock... replace your head gasket! Luckily I caught this in the early stages. Thanks gasket masters! 10/10 would definitely recommend their services. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like any Prius Gen 3 is safe from this notorious problem. I’m sitting around 160k miles and this is the first issue I’ve had with my car. Lastly, I should mention that their services are extremely affordable!!

Awesome video - god send for anyone attempting DIY head gasket replacement. The tips for securing timing chain and gear position during disassembly is fantastic. Thank you! One thing I would add is that you don't need special E8 torx socket to remove EGR cooler. You can remove front stud using 6mm socket and rear three studs don't need to be removed. Just remove the 12mm nuts. Everything went smoothly, and even replacing bent cylinder #1 rod wasn't bad. Only thing that really got screwed up was putting back the motor mount. Bolts used in Toyota motor mount frame bracket are rubbish!! It cross threads so easily and ruins the threads.

This was my first day and made it to 10 min point in video. That included getting organized & cleaning the EGR/Cooler/intake manifold, which were packed with black goo. At 250k miles they were filthy! Am using two full size folding tables to lay out parts in careful order as they are removed. Another smaller one holds my tools. Being organized is the key to success with DIY project like this. I purchased Fel-Pro PT-1 kit and new head bolts off Amazon before starting this job. Won’t replace water pump, chain tensioner or other parts unless they look bad. Tomorrow will be big reveal! Hopefully no obvious damage to pistons 🤞. For those who suspect a head gasket and are getting a misfire on start up after sitting. Usually its worse after sitting longer. You can remove the oring from the coolant overflow tank which de pressurizes the system. If you misfire goes away to clears up a lot you can bet you need a head gasket. You can drive it like this for a while especially in cool weather. You may have to add water daily if you drive hard and coolant boils out with it not being sealed system like this. I drove mine 2 months like this but it started misfiring again and I did the gasket myself. I used honda bond for the sealer and reused every gasket but the head gasket and head bolts. Im 50k miles with no issues on it so far. I do think it my seep some where the tensioner is from lack of replacing the gasket but no drips.

I forgot to hook up my pcv hose. It started, made a horrible rattling noise and stalled. I almost had a panic attack, What a horrible feeling. I can tell these guys got that same horrible feeling thinking they ruined and engine, when it was just a hose not hooked up. . lol Thank you for the video!

Just found the channel, subbed and am likely going to have the guys put a new motor in a family friends ‘15 Prius soon. She drove it 250k miles in 7.5 years and a head gasket leak seized the engine and bent a rod. The Toyota dealership in Roseville, Ca is a rip off.

The only thing missing appears to be the torque settings for the head bolts and any other bolt that needs a specific torque. I plan to do this one day and I imagine I will be able to find all the needing settings. This is just the easy stuff anyway but love how the video covers the difficult things.

FWIW the head bolts on this prius are torque to angle. If i recall properly, you torque the head bolts to 36 foot pounds in sequence, and then tighten them 90 degrees in sequence, and then a final pass with an additional 45 degrees. Definitely double check before attempting- but thats the general idea.

Best tutorial for this I’ve seen Well done My only complaint is the repetitive music, it’s not a deal breaker but….. Maybe pick 5 background music selections and rotate them at intervals that coincide with individual steps in the process What can I say, it’s the internet…. everyone has one! (or is one, lol) Keep up the good work! BTW I produce a long running reality TV show on the World Fishing Network Our show is in its 16th season

Absolutely fantastic video! I would consider my automotive skills to be intermediate and have never attempted a project of this size. Your video was easy to follow! New head gasket is in my 2011 Prius... it fired up and has been running smooth for 6 weeks now without any oil leaks or issues. You guys are incredible! Thanks for creating this video!

Great video. That must have been a pour and go sealer. The other type won’t clog up engine or radiator blue devils type that’s more involved with having to flush cooling system first and remove thermostat it’s basically liquid glass. It turns to glass when it encounters hot surface. The stuff you pulled off headgasket was a goo. Glad I didn’t use that type. Chris fix has a good video on headgasket sealers. Thanks again for the great video
