This video is a pretty comprehensive guide to all things escaping mount position. This can be one of the most difficult and dangerous positions to find yourself in, regardless of the context, whether self defense or sport. These escapes in this video are some of the best techniques and concepts I have found over the years for dealing with this situation. This honestly could have been much longer, but I feel as if this video contains the most important considerations, and is basically a mini-course. I hope it helps!

Eli, it would be great to you doing a live drill afterwards. I noticed that in some of these static demonstrations your partner has given you a lot of space for you to work through. As a smaller guy, I purposely teamed up with a 225 very-wide girth player. I did ok to survive but I forgot to do these moves and I couldn't get out using a shrimp out move. You are more advanced so I think you can manuever easily but for me (white belt) under pressure it was hard.

Thank you so much. As a new white belt, I get dominated with mounts. I tried some of your escape techniques and they worked...surprising my training partner and myself. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, art and love of BJJ.

I teach everyone of these, the only other problem you may run into is the technical mount or modified mount. For that one I teach top arm through the hole between my belly button and the back of their knee, then bump them forward with a bridge as I slide south out from underneath them.
@KnightJiuJitsu

Definitely. And I made another video or two on just tech mount escapes too for that reason.

Excellent content. I’ve been trying to find a way to word this as feedback (take it with a grain of salt), maybe it’s just preference, but I find myself wishing you might slow down a little in your instruction and talking. There is obviously so much GREAT info and detail, and it feels sometimes rushed and I don’t want to miss anything. Again, excellent knowledge and detail and I’ll be subscribing. 🤙🏼

I appreciate the politeness and the comment. I actually get that comment from time to time. I make these particular videos for short and fast reference guides. In all my classes and full length instructionals I teach in a slower, more detailed pace like I would in person. I vary the delivery speed based on the attention span of the platform, so on social media I talk through things quickly. I appreciate you watching them.

Great details! For the upa why do you prefer the gable grip to trap the arm versus swimming inside and wrapping? Just curious as to pros/cons
@KnightJiuJitsu
@KnightJiuJitsu 3 года назад
The swim is fine if the posted arm is close enough, but opening the wedge of your arm to wrap theirs can be a liability if the angle is off. I mention it briefly in the video for better illustration.

Thank you for your videos ! Do these technics function when somebody heavier than you is on you ?
@KnightJiuJitsu
@KnightJiuJitsu Год назад
That is what these were specifically designed for. If they required you to be bigger and stronger, you wouldn't need technique. These are based on leverage and weight distribution and structural manipulation.

Hey Eli. I couldn’t catch what you were saying at @5:40, but seems like an important detail to getting up on your elbow, which I struggle with in this position and when in bottom half guard. Retract the shoulder, when? And push?
@KnightJiuJitsu
@KnightJiuJitsu Год назад
I think it is an important detail for sure. I see a lot of people struggle getting to their elbow because they try to hop their shoulder off the ground and stick their elbow underneath them. This is clumsy and inefficient. I kind of gloss over what I mean at 5:40, but I recommend retracting the shoulder so it pulls the whole arm back, then pushing your chest and shoulder forward over your elbow in order to get the elbow under you. Hope this helps.

What about if he has you in the position like 17:24, but your arms are fully extended out, instead of bent at the elbows? I once ended up in this position and couldn't do a thing. Still don't know how to counter it.
@KnightJiuJitsu
@KnightJiuJitsu 3 года назад
You can shoulder walk toward your hands until there’s enough bend in the arms to do it. The other thing to remember is that he can’t really do much to you while he is pinning your hands like that.

It is so strange that initially when you are mounted you think it is over, but then after time and science it almost seems like a non-position. Still super difficult though with punches, you have like a fraction of a second for it to not go bad!

@@KnightJiuJitsu I remember I was at this barbecue in Russia, and these big guys were play fighting semi serious and they didnt know how to get out of basic mount when they were all fighting and pinning the wrists down. They had so much power, and the dominant guy on top was like an arm wrestling the bottom guy to free the wrists, because they didnt know simply to engage the core and legs below and bump/bridge! It was the reoccuring theme of all the fights. Guys were much stronger than me and eventually I gave the bottom guy some advise and then had some semi serious battle myself with different guys. My girlfriend was very impressed at the time because I didnt tell her I was a martial artist up until this point! That cemented for me the value of ground. I could already hand fight, but that didnt come up at the barbecue!

I can’t elbow escape from faster people, which is everyone. When I bump and put the elbow inside to make room for my knee to come out they move up instantly and it becomes a very expensive waste of energy.
