Complete Resurfacing and Retiling of My Pool - By Myself

***This is a re upload of my video, since youtube gave the copyright to someone else and would not give it to me, even after I disputed it. I deleted the other video and have put this one up now.
**Note - I will be doing a follow up on how my pool is now - 2 years later.
This video is of my project of compLetely resurfacing and retiling my pool. I had been quoted $15,000 by two different companies to resurface the pool. I decided to do it myself. After researching about pool resurfacing for many weeks and weighing my options of epoxy paint or plaster. I chose plaster. Epoxy paint can and will peel after time. I wanted it done where it would last.
I found a material and company Sider Crete. www.sider-crete..., though at that time they were Sider Oxydro.
I tried to hire people over and over again to help me. I even advertised on Craigslist and called many people. But it seemed no one wanted to help me no matter what as it was too difficult a job. So... I ended up doing it myself. The only two things I did not do myself was grind down the old tile (though I had started using an impact drill to get it out totally), and putting the tiles on.
Other than that, I grouted the tiles and resurfaced it myself. It is actually a three person job.
There were many many steps to redoing the pool and it took me one and half months to finish it. I spent 12+ hours a day in the pool. Also the person who put the tiles in, made a mess and spilled mortar all over the pool surface. It took me one week just to clean the mess out of the pool that he had created.
I had to grind down the mortar besides grind down under the tiles due to excess mortar under them.
But the whole cost was approximately $3500 compared to the $15000 I was quoted.
My pool needed to be retiled and refinished badly.
I did this project in September to October 2011.
I have done many projects around my home, including laying wood floors myself, plumbing, electrical, laying tile and redoing bathrooms just to name a few projects.
I learned how to do it from researching on the internet and reading about it all.
It shows a woman CAN DO what needs to be done herself! We CAN accomplish what we put our minds to!
Hope you enjoy the video. I will put more of my before and after projects on youtube.
Fun little tidbit - 8/9/13 -
A production company contacted me and will be using it in a movie "Wish I were Here" with Zach Braff and Kate Hudson. Zach Braff will be sitting at a table by his pool watching my video on an IPad through youtube, as he wants to resurface his pool himself in the movie. He will be watching how I did it. They will show a portion of the video in the movie. No, I am not getting paid anything for it, but it is fun anyway.
I just wanted to share that fun little tidbit. The movie comes out next year, September 2014.

You freaking ROCK! I am also a woman who has a pool and there are lazy people who own companies who never even show up for an estimate. I stumbled on your video to research how hard this would be to do it as a DIY. It looks like it is hard but not impossible! Thanks for the encouraging video!

What a great job you did! I am a 74 year old Viet Nam Vet. My wife and I are in the process of our own pool restoration. We have an older Marcite liner on our pool. None of the pool companies will repair ours as it was made with asbestos. So we are doing it ourselves. Wish us luck.

Sherrie… Absolutely fantastic! I was focusing on the pool repair itself. I didn’t realize it was a woman doing this job until the end. Thank you for the graceful and powerful display of equality. Conversely, this guy (below) who rambles on about his theories of issues and his negative commentary has only benefited us with yet another example. That being, man or woman, there will always be some little mind with a big ego. Thankfully, as can be seen in the many positive commentaries, he is a small representation of ignorance in our wonderful “do-it-yourself communities”.

In new concrete pool construction a polished pool surface is considered the premiere finish. In an old pool if the plaster is sold and does not need patching then it is relatively straight forward and can be done in a day by two men on an average pool and give you an incredible finish.

If we compare auto body repair, walls repairs, wood repair etc. Almost the same. But pool repairs are totally different because there is 1: water 2: chemicals 3: pressure. If you remove old plaster you will be able to see crack or oxidation on the gunite frame bars etc. When just paint over the old material plaster is not good idea... good luck!

I'm redoing my pool now. I've done it several times in the last 10 years but that's because my pool had been painted originally and so I just keep on doing that. But I have all the steps down. Drain it, pressure wash it. Use my grinder to go over the entire pool. Acid wash the pool. Rinse the pool go over a few places generally with the grinder. One more pressure wash. Let it dry, Mask it off and spray it. But I can say that this is the last time I'll be doing it. I'm having pebble tec put on before the next job. Right now the guys are about 18 months out believe it or not. I did wonder about something. Every place I've looked to see how they replaster a pool they always chip the old pool with numatic tools. That's a huge job. You didn't have any photos at all of how you applied the new surface. I wondered how you did it. Also, now that it's been a long time I wonder how it held up. Oh, lastly I can relate to your grout issue. This time the first thing that I did was to use my grinder and remove the old grout from the tile. Then I regrouted, half the pool. Waited until the next day and used 120 grit paper to sand it off. Wow. What a job. It took me several hours to get it off. I'm glad that was the shallow end. Live and learn. Today I'll go ahead and grout the last half, but this time, I'm going to sponge it off as I go. Lesson learned.

I am super impressed!! We are needing to do ours, was told anywhere from 10,000. to resurface....yikes!!! We only paid 18k to have it built in 2004, so was checking to see how hard to diy. So this was rolled on? For some reason I thought it would be like regular plaster, a put on by trowel? You did a fantastic job lady, and one you can be proud to say you diy!!

Hey Sherrie, excellent job. Thank-you. I have emptied our pool and cleaned it as the water has been pumped out. Thank you for mentioning the diamond grinder. I've been using a drill and a steel wire brush, but it's kind of slow and go. I was starting to think, I would simply put mortar over the rough stuff and save the entire step of trowling the mortar before putting on the tiles. :) Wow 10X with the power washer??? Our pool looks ok, I may save the resurfacing step and just re-do the tile. Last time 13 years ago, I had it re-plastered and tiled for $7,500. That's why now, Ima doit myselfer again!!

Ours however is a hybrid pool with fiberglass surround and concrete bottom. We painted 3 years ago and it peeled around the water edge(above water.) She hasn't updated any of her videos for two-plus years. It's a shame that you're going to hire someone. If you do it right, it's not hard to do but it takes time and will last for a few years until your plaster really needs to be redone. The company has been around for 80 years, so I would assume the opposite - that it DID pay off in the end.

Literally in the parking lot of Home Depot right now running pump. Came across your video while searching for RU-vid videos on plastering a pool! After getting the quotes I'm thinking of doing it myself. Question, how did you find the leak. I too, have a small leak that goes down about an inch or two before the tile. You did a great jobs and gave useful tips. Now, it cost you $3.5k by yourself, if you have to count labor hours the cost would go way higher. One detail, is that you didn't remove the old plaster all the day, just did a surface refinishing. Many companies don't do that due to warranty problems (it cracks eventually, specially with a bad water chemistry which is most of the cases with home owners). Nevertheless! Amazing job!

Good stuff! I think this dog eat dog world requires for us to do it ourselves! I'd be happy to pay a tradesperson to do things that I really don't want to do but the crazy costs have driven me to learn new skills and buy more tools. Saved thousands of dollars on doing projects myself that don't require immediate attention but allow me to slowly and methodically complete them.
