Here is my Complete Review of Celestron 14 EdgeHD for Astrophotography. Exactly one year ago, I promised you all that I was only doing a preliminary review at that time and I will come back and provide you a comprehensive review later. Well, it took one full year to learn a little bit more about this complex telescope. I tried to put everything together in this video what I learned about this scope, whether you should buy or not, who should buy and what are all the other considerations. I am putting all my accessories here, I hope they will help you quickly understand and make your own decision.

How does this telescope perform in area with large temperature drops at night? Do you have to refocus often?

why don't you use an atmospheric dispersion corrector. it works really well and it is not more that 300 dollars

Thanks Ray! For the review on the Celestron 14Edge HD, you have got a lot of patience my problem is I have not got the time and most of all not got the patience. This is a beautiful telescope unfortunately out of my price range plus the British Weather means I would not get the use out of this telescope I'm very happy at the moment with my Explore Scientific Ed127 still learning this wonderful hobby. You have come a long way with your processing skills I remember watching your video on your first moon shot going back a few years ago. Excellent M51 beautiful colour. CS and stay safe 👍

The best accessory I bought for my 14 HD was the hyperstar. Even though it's pricey it was worth every penny. Biggest problem I've seen is the mount that was included with mine, the CGEM, tends to not be enough for that scope. That's a heavy tube, and with certain accessories attached to it sometimes cause problems with tracking. The next thing on my list is a tougher mount, and already beginning to set up a permanent location, and build a home for it. I love that finderscope setup you have. Another thing on my wishlist.

It's refreshing to hear you say you throw away as much imaging data as you do. My current imaging scope is a Meade 8" ACF, and I find I have about similar numbers. I might get to keep 50-60% on a good night, but any kind of atmospheric distortion or even very high thin clouds can screw up a good chunk of the images. It's a game of patience and collecting more data. Even though it's difficult, I find imaging with an SCT to be very rewarding.
@RaysAstrophotography
@RaysAstrophotography 4 года назад
Definitely Kyle! For me that 20% is worth more than all the 100% data - it is the same feeling always!

Hi, Ray! Very impressive review. I have this same scope for over 5 years now. Couple of notes. I have the 0.7X reducer and imaged with it for a while. Lately, though, I'm doing small galaxies it at native F/11. Love it. BUT! For that you need OAG and beefier Mount. Even for F/7.7 I'd use the OAG. Part of the reason you have to discard that many frames is the differential flexure. Also for the Scope this size and a large Mount you inevitably are have to invest in the Observatory. I did that right away and about a year ago completed a full automation of it. Allows me to use those precious few nights that I have in this climate (I am in Upstate NY). I always recommend for this scope the MesuMount 200. It served me very well for all these 5 years and it is readily automatable. It is also less expensive than some other options available. Clear Skies and Stay Well!

Hello, thank you for this review. I’m new to the telescope world. Thinking of investing in the Celestron Edge 14 HD/CGX-L computerized mount. Would I need a guide if I purchase the Celestron Star Sense Auto Align? I would like to invest in this scope & mount, but would like to know the additional accessories in order to observe great views & receive phenomenal astro images. Also, would I need an HD pro wedge for the Celestron Edge 14?

A super scope Ray! Thanks for the all the details. You know I had the same issue with the dew shield on my C925 which I fixed by adding some (Home Depot) Velcro adhesive backed pads and straps along the sides. Really holds it in place! Cheers!
@RaysAstrophotography
@RaysAstrophotography 4 года назад
sure John! I will see if I can make use of it as it is! What is your opinion on the aluminum one?
@johnadastra1754
@johnadastra1754 4 года назад
Hey Ray. Never tried the aluminum due to the expense and the weight. Metal surfaces would seem to be more of a dew collector than the simple vinyl shield. A more rigid plastic or carbon fiber type might be a nice accessory if available.
@RaysAstrophotography
@RaysAstrophotography 4 года назад
I never thought about that metal shields will collect more dew! something to research further on! Thanks John for the pointers!

@markc7884
@markc7884 4 года назад
Should be fine Chuck. I use the same dolly wheels you do, the specified weight capacity is more than enough. In fact your floor should be even better as it is completely smooth - otherwise you could use moving rags or spend a day building a custom wooden tripod/dolly But note with a focal length this high, everything needs to be more precise. Not as easy as widefield unfortunately
@RaysAstrophotography
@RaysAstrophotography 4 года назад
It is too big Chuck to move in and out and also takes lot of space as well when you make turns inside the garage as well. It is a nice thing to have, but it comes with a price!

Totally impressive setup. I wouldn't mind this at all however; I'd have to get rid of tons of stuff to be able to house this unit. The other problem is to "wheel" it out of the garage, there's really no great spot for viewing. I bet the assembly time takes a bit. Being a "newbie" I'll get over it and keep researching for something I can use around here. It's not the price, but I need a logical device which I can set up a "little" quicker in regard to topography, part being the walls on either side of the driveway, immediate trees from the door etc. But, GREAT review, and the jacket is ok Ray...LOL. Oh, I subscribed. :)

Hi Ray, this is South Korea. I also have a EdgeHD 14. Do you think you need a reducer when observing with your eyes? I am now focusing on visual observation. I have a Baader Clicklock Eyepiece clamp. But is T2-adapter essential? I'm not good at English anyway.😅
@RaysAstrophotography
@RaysAstrophotography 2 года назад
Hello South Korea! You don't need reducer when observing using Edge HD 14" - you need reducer if you want to observe nebula or a big galaxy targets. You don't need T2 adapter unless Baader clamp needs one. I never used it. Just focus and enjoy the views.

Curious how adding a Hyperstar to the 14" scope would compare to the 11" Rasa? Both are F2 the 14" ends up with a 715mm focal length. I'm guessing the 14" in rasa mode would produce about the same amount of good pictures while bringing in a bit more light. Are you ready to spend another 1500.00? LOL. As for carting it around I'd start with a 2 wheeled hand cart for about 100.00 then build onto it a secure cushioned support system, it would allow you to cart it anywhere even up and down stairs. Also thought it would be fun to build a trailer observatory with sleeping quarters, it would cost close to 20k. Both building it and using it would make for some great Utube type videos.

Hi Ray, do you use a one shot colour camera with the C14 for galaxies? I enjoy your channel a lot.
@RaysAstrophotography
@RaysAstrophotography 3 года назад
Thanks Cuisle! I like to use OSC for galaxies for C14. It is lot easier. Monochrome, and LRGB filters might improve the signal, but the number of images for each of these filters vary by focus and quality a lot. At the end it is too complex to put it together. For a dark site and remote observatory (permanent setup) Mono is the best choice.

I’m new to astronomy and need some advice on necessary gear. I ordered an 8” Newtonian but it’s not GoTo. I have 2 extra lenses, 4 filters, a 2x Barlow, but that’s all. I still have a small budget to get some additional equipment. Should I save for the GoTo (it is upgradable), get a laser collimator, I’m not sure. I wanted to get your advice if possible. Thank you.

Can you triangulate from the last comets grouping from their entire point in are solar system and take a look out for a slower moving object that maybe off from the entrance point from witch the comets entered our solar system . I'm saying is there a bigger cue ball that was knocking things around out there.. or am i thinking to much...?

Hi again Ray, I have a couple of questions that I could really do with your help on, thanks. I already have 2 Scope Buggys for my other telescopes but for the CGXL I am thinking of getting I need to know which size you have there? Do you know if you have the 'Standard', 'Extended' or 'Super' Scope Buggy? It's crucial information because I need the tripod to be able to sit on the buggy in its lowest setting. I think that's how you have yours set up?? Also, would you be bale to tell me please the tip to tip measurement of the CGXL tripod in its lowest setting please? I looked on Celestron's page and could only find the heaight data. Thank you so much!!

Ray, I know this is an old video, but I noticed your guidescope has a huge amount of coma aberration as seen in the lower right window at 15:05. This is why your tracking is poor. Depending on the exposure time, this poor tracking can degrade your main scope's imaging and cause your images to lose a lot of sharpness. I've been a professional astronomer and an optical engineer for over 40 years, so I hope you consider this advice, and either replace the guidescope or recollimate it, if possible.

Hi Ray, it is not normal to throw away 50-80% of the subs. 10% is too much. I think the reasons are not enough mount, too much flexture and most importantly using a guide scope. You would do much better with a C11 with an OAG.
@RaysAstrophotography
@RaysAstrophotography 4 года назад
Thanks Tolga! Thanks for checking! I do wanted to add a good mount to this mix soon! I wanted to build an observatory and put a good mount inside. This remote work thing changed all the plans. Once the situation becomes normal, first thing I will have to do is get a mount that can carry C14 with lot more precision!

I do not suggest buying the Celestron 0.7x reducer. The 0.63x reducer by Starizona has better quality and reduces more, but the cost is slightly higher. If you have the non-edgeHD version, the corrector optics quality is so good that it is equal to EdgeHD - you will not be able to tell the difference! Not endorsing by the way, just speak from experience and what I've heard
