Bless you for this video, I thought I wasn't watering enough when I saw the brown leafes because the internet said so. My plant doesn't stand up so idk what her issue is but maybe too much water 😂

omg, I bought one few months ago, did very well on its own spot, then BAM!! Spidermites took over almost overnight! I had to prune everything bald. Luckily, they are fast and plentiful growers so I'm looking after the young leaves before a second wave comes.

Soooo happy to see this video!!! I purchased my Schismatoglottis Wallichii a little over a month ago and she is looking very sad right now. I figured out the drooping when she needed water, but could not figure out why the edges were browning. Guttation!!! Who knew? YOU DID!!! Thank you for sharing 😁

You and I have the same schismatoglottis. I got mine on clearance from Lowes, it was completely limp with see-through grey spots that later just peeled right off. I'm glad to know what variety it might be and why the leaves were doing that! Thank you for this video, it was so helpful!

Costa Farms has released Schismatoglottis wallichii as a new addition to their Trending Tropicals line. They’re $50 through the website so I’m waiting to see if they eventually make it to Lowe’s/Home Depot at a cheaper price. I’m excited to get my hands on one though.

I’ve been seeing them in local nurseries here for half that cost for a very full 6” pot, so definitely just wait and I’m sure you’ll start seeing them around for less.

Check Lowe's now! (July 2023). I just purchased a very full, very healthy looking S. wallichii for $20. And as our lovely hostess here suggested, check the roots. Mine is reaching root-bound status and is also planted in a super peaty mix, as most Costa Farm plants are.

Thanks for this video! It’s been difficult to find reliable care info for this plant, so this is very helpful. Do you think schis would do well in a self-watering pot or in semi-hydro like pon?

Most of Borneo is peatlands, so I think the peat mix is best for Schismatoglottis
@Danko_HS
@Danko_HS Год назад
There's a big difference between plants living in a peat substrate outdoors on the jungle floor vs indoors in a pot. The air circulation is much higher outdoors so the peat dries faster thus the roots have access to more oxygen. You need to consider several factors before trying to mimic the jungle substrate and other native conditions these plants live in. Indoors and in a pot, there is a very high chance they will get root rot in a 100% peat substrate. That's why substrate mixes such as Aroid Mix is a thing.

Yes. I first saw Schismatoglottis wallichii at a grocery store about 1 month ago; in very poor condition. I wanted to get it but didn't know anything about it and it wasn't labeled accurately. It had 2 labels Philodendron & Schismatoglottis which didn't compute. So after seeing FB posts about Schismatoglottis wallichii, I got really interested. I now have the exact same one as you but the online search showed it was a Motleyana??? Anyhoo, thanks so much for sharing your information. Most helpful.
@AlohaPlantLife
@AlohaPlantLife Год назад
Unfortunately there is so much mislabeling of these plants it’s hard sometimes to figure out exactly which one you have (unless it’s the wallichii just because that one is so unique looking).

@@AlohaPlantLife the Sch. wallichii and Scindapsus Pictus Exotica are two plants I would love to have. But...for now have to wait until my funds and availability align. Am really glad you're in TX like me. Our environment just doesn't match the East or West coast. I grow the Pink Syngonium outside. Our grid-breaking winter freeze last year which killed so many plants, only killed the leaves. It sprung back to life with a vengeance, I can't give enough of it away. It's like a weed. All that to say, I take all advice into consideration and then "test". In short...Plants want to live. Even if they are Rex Begonias throwing hissy fits indoors 🤣

Excellent video thank you for this. I am interested in what you are describing as guttation though. I've had the same symptoms on some philidendron where the leaf seems to become saturated, thin and soggy with water and if touched it almost disintegrates. As far as I can tell these symptoms dont describe guttation. From what I see guttation is relatively harmless to plants unless over fertilized. Really just trying to figure out what that "rot" is.
@AlohaPlantLife
@AlohaPlantLife Год назад
So sorry for my delayed response (lost my cat around the time you posted this and just now trying to catchup). Guttation won’t kill your plant but it can cause serious damage and if it does it’s usually because of overwatering which can lead to root rot which can kill your plant. Also, too much humidity or misting leaves can cause what you’re describing as well. Hope this helps💚

Hey, thank you for the amazing video! I have one question after watching your video. Does schismatoglottis like misting? Do you recommend spraying the leaves with water? Or maybe it's better to just water the plant directly into the ground? I will be grateful for your response! Thanks in advance!

I got three Schismatoglottis Wallichii a month ago, I would class them as “toddlers” in maturity - but I struggle a lot with yellowing leaves… that pale yellowing of the entire leaf and petiole/stem(?). They get very bright indirect light from west-facing windows and I just water them like my other ariods, so I can’t figure out if it’s just the plants giving up on the smaller leaves in order to push out new, bigger leaves or if it’s a case of too much light, or if it’s the watering… but they’re dry when I water them!!
@AlohaPlantLife
@AlohaPlantLife Год назад
Without seeing it in person it’s hard to say. Mine has lived directly in a north facing window its entire life and I’ve never experienced that problem so maybe it could be light related but once again hard to say without seeing it. They don’t particularly like to dry all the way out between waterings though so maybe try adjusting the watering first and see if that helps?

I’m a new owner of the S Walllichii and after watering yesterday, one of the biggest leaves was totally limp, but not discoloured. I gave it a tug and it pulled right out. Closer inspection on a neighbouring leaf from same clump it seems a lot of mush inside the leaf stem and it looks like a growing leaf inside may have not succeeded and this rotted to brown sludge. Any idea how this has happened?? Also, does this plant flower? Should they be cut off to preserve energy to leaf growth?
@AlohaPlantLife
@AlohaPlantLife 9 месяцев назад
Sounds like maybe the plant was overwatered at some point. Have you checked to make sure the roots look healthy? Yes, they do flower and you can cut them off.

Hi! Thanks for the great info! I recently bought a “homalomena” purple sword (which is totally not a homalomena, of course) and have been trying to figure out what it actually is! I think it’s so one of these, or am I still off???? It says Apoballis Lavallei on the tag, and when I googled it then I found videos about homalomenas and realized it’s a purple sword… oh but not really a homalomena! And then the name schismatoglottis started popping up and I got to your video… please tell me I found the right plant type! 😅
@AlohaPlantLife
@AlohaPlantLife Год назад
They’re all closely related and part of the same plant family, so the care for each isn’t too drastically different. What you have sounds like an Apoballis acuminatissima (reddish purple backside to the leaves right?). If so, care for it is pretty much identical to Schismatoglottis. At least it wasn’t mislabeled as an Aglaonema which I’ve been seeing a lot lately. Hope this helps💚
