We discovered tons of pinholes in our roof as we gutted our 1988 Toyota Dolphin RV. This caused lots of water damage inside the RV. We had to completely rebuild the subfloor and two walls due to this water damage.
So, instead of patching all of the holes, we decided to completely rebuild the roof with a piece of heavy duty aluminum! Check out the video to see how we go about rebuilding the roof! Let us know if you have any questions about the process.
Thank you for watching! Feel free to leave any questions or comments down below.

I’m restoring the same RV and you guys give me so much motivation to keep going. I’m gonna do the roof the same as you guys. The restoration can be so daunting at times but every time I come back to your videos I get a little more inspo to tackle the project. Please don’t stop posting I love these videos as they are informative and entertaining. Best Ezra,Santa Cruz California

Why ,??? Those toyota camper are good, the roof is made of aluminum. All you had to do it remove the vents, A.C. , fan. Etc and re-seal it them all and pain the roof , and its brand new again

hi there! I'm restoring a Toyota Conquest which is a slightly smaller version of the Dolphin. Thanks for putting out your videos cuz I've been hard pressed to find any Conquest references and it was you folx who got me to realize the Dolphin is basically the big brother of the Conquest :) It's been great to know there's other folx working on old rvs rather than buses or vans! anyways, I'm replacing the roof as well although I'm gonna go with a PVC membrane by Lasalle Bristol rather than aluminum sheeting. I'm wondering what thickness plywood you went with? you only said thin plywood... all the best... DNA in upstate New York

That's neat, I didn't know that about the Conquest! I'm glad my videos have been helpful for you. The plywood we got is .197 inches. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Do you mind sharing the name of the place you got the rolled aluminum from? I'm in AZ and I can't find a seller anywhere! We need to replace the roof on our 1990 Toyota Odessa Americana! Thanks for your videos! 😊

Sure, we got it at the Central Valley Trailer Repair. If you can find a semi trailer repair shop in AZ, they may have the same aluminum! Of course, I’m glad they are useful to you 😊

I live in South Central Pennsylvania. The least expensive roll I could find was over $3000.

Hi guys, still obsessing over this transformation you both performed and using as motivation to get my project going. I commented on your full gut video earlier this week. I also have a 1988 Dolphin. I believe our models are different. The only thing that differs is my kitchen is currently against the shower wall instead by the cab over. MY QUESTION: when securing the composite roof base you created are you screwing ONLY into the framing. It is difficult to tell if there were any other steps I couldn't see. Thank you so much guys!

Hey Joseph! Thanks for the questions and kind comments. I'm glad our build is helpful to you. We found a lot of inspiration from others during our build as well. You nailed it (pun intended), we simply screwed the assembled panels right into the wall framing. The walls are framed out of very thin wood (3/4-inch) and on top of the thin wall framing there was a slightly wider piece of wood, maybe one-inch wide that we screwed the roof panels into. We used lots of screws and they were exterior coated screws. So far it has held up. If you are concerned about the connection you could also lay down a bead of wood glue or construction adhesive in addition to the screws. Feel free to fire off any other questions you think of!

@@KikisAdventures You guys are the best. I hope you don't regret that suggestion. I will be back with many more questions haha! Currently in the process of building a temporary frame just to hold the fiberglass together while moving across state lines to where I just bought a home with my fiance. I'll let you guys know how that goes. Wish I could post photos here to show you where I currently am so you both could shed some additional wisdom and support. Hopefully our Toyota can find a comfortable resting place soon; in between like 4-5 separate random craiglist lots and cold calling semi-abandoned-looking garages in industrial parks haha. It is very tough finding a home big enough for this whale of a vehicle when you live in an urban area.

Where did you find the new trim?
@KikisAdventures
@KikisAdventures 2 года назад
We reused the metal trim! We used a wire wheel on an angle grinder and then spray painted it.

Have you located a source for trim? I have a damaged section on mine.
