You people from Europe should know that this behavior from Uruguay national team is a classic, you can find the videos of Copa América 2015 where they also were defeated on quarterfinals, they punch everyone, 4 different players even hit the referees and received no sanction at all. In this context, the idea that players shouldn’t have gone into the stands is bullshit. If there were authorities in the stands managing it, that’s a different story. What if one of the fans had a weapon? There were no police there for ages. The precedent set and any consequences should be burdened on the organisers of the stadium and not the players. The players are there to play not manage the crowd. In the absence of anyone in uniform managing the crowd and their own families were in the cross fire, I think the players reacted reasonably and proportionally

We had a World Cup in 94, No issues We had a Copa America in 2016 No Issues Maybe the problem is the fans and players in this instance and there should be some arrests to send a message that in this country, you don't get to assault people.

Luckily I did not get the worse of it, but if you were wearing a Uruguay jersey you were at the very least getting beer thrown at you and getting yelled at by a good amount of drunk fans. The problem isn't the players here for me, the problem comes from the organization. Any man worth anything would react the same way watching their family being put in that situation.

There were 72,000 people with cellphones and tv crews from all of South America, yet no footage has come out of this alleged aggression towards the player’s families leading to the melee. In fact, things were calming down by police presence until Uruguay players go up the stands. News organizations need to stop parroting this lie. The latest video making waves in Reddit shows an old Uruguayan guy starting the brawl while Colombian fans were trying to get him to calm down- this did happen near the area player’s families were seated, but it had nothing to do with them. There was plenty of police when Darwin went into the stands. In fact he pushes 3 cops to try to land a couple punches on Colombian fans. They didn’t protect anyone- they made the situation worse. I didn’t know protecting your family involved leaving them behind to go fight people in the stands and throwing bottles and chairs in the direction your family was seated. Also plenty of videos of Uruguay’s football federation employees hurling ice, bottles, and drinks towards the fans from their VIP box for having the audacity to celebrate that their team won in their presence. So the Uruguay Federation chose to give the VIP box to their directors instead of the players families. It is a well known fact that Uruguay are sore losers- they always start fights, bite people, or try to fight the referee when they lose.
