Completing a Living Pokédex in Gen 1 

Was this overall efficient… not after all the heart ache. Was this solid content to watch? Yes, yes it was.

To solve the mystery as to where the counter went wrong I watched back the videos an marked off the Pokémon as you obtained them. The two Pokémon you forgot to count was Gyarados in this video and one of the starters in the previous.

Back in the 90s when that came out, me and my friend did complete the pokedex. Not a livingdex, but the ingame pokedex. And it was not so bad between us two. One had to start a few times over for the starter Pokemon, but otherwise we just played normally and then looked in the magazine (no internet back then) where to find the missing ones. The one Pokemon we struggled was Tauros. It took us weeks to catch it. And all that for just an ingame piece of paper saying "you did well". We where so dissatisfied that there was no real prize.

25:30 Because of the inconvenient Elite Four in gen 1 is why I breed my Pokémon in gen 2 and level them up and evolve them there before I trade them back to gen 1.

There's a lot of hardware required for this, but Pokemon Stadium may have helped you quite a bit. Stadium/Stadium 2 allow you to play the games up to 4x speed and also have a PC/Box management system. Anyway, I'm really enjoying these videos! Looking forward to seeing more from you!

This can be done with a single copy of pokemon. Here's how: You must use a version of the mew glitch, the ditto glitch. It works just the same, but instead of fighting specific trainers to get the pokemon you want, you must fight dittos on route 15, near Fuschia. You need this glitch because some pokemon can't be found via "normal" mew glitch Beforehand you must have the 1st pokemon on your party be level 26 and you must use repel, so that you avoid finding pokemons below that level (non dittos). You also need to have a pokemon on your party with a specific special value, this can be manipulated by catching any random pokemon then using rare candies and calciums to set it up (you may have to repeat this process sometimes, due to how special scales, sometimes it jumps a specific value). Each special value corresponds to a certain pokemon. Apparently I can't post a link on this channel with the full table, just search "list of pokemon special ditto glitch gen 1" and you shall easily find a list with every special value and corresponding Pokemon. After you perform the glitch and find the ditto, you must let it copy the pokemon with the setup special, kill ditto while it's transformed, then fly to Lavender Town as you would for mew. Instead of finding mew you will find the pokemon you setup. You can catch any pokemon with this method, it just requires a bit of patience. Good Luck catching them all.

I find kinda funny that you use Parasect for catching, because my catcher in most games is also a Parasect. To be precise one with false swipe, spore, a move to hit ghosts which I forgot, and most importantly Damp as an ability because freaking self destruct

You should have left that cursed Dragonair as it was, and grabbed your third Dratini in Red, then traded it over. That way you would have gotten the exp bonus while training it to Dragonite.

I personally don't have much interest in playing Red and Blue (only started in Gen 3), but I still followed along with the tracker in this playthrough, so I basically spent more time looking at that than the video itself, and I had a blast!

"and its completely unnecessary" thats what makes pokemon so great, you arent supposed to do the optimal you do what is fun or favorite. Hell, my favorite is (obviously) Vulpix. Alolan Vulpix was kinda bad, but you bet your ass i was using it during my sun/moon playthrough lol.

What is actually efficient is to use the Pokemon Daycare for the Pokemon you have to evolve by leveling up, I always do this when I complete the Pokedex in RBY

In my opinion, Gen 1 is one of the few gens where it's a feasible task to complete the Pokedex. Later gens would either be frustrating to a pount I'm not willing to go through with it, or would have So Many Pokemon that I would be entirely turned off by the mere idea of it. Needless to say, I'm one of the few people happy about newer Pokemon games not having a national dex, because I am willing to accept the lack of Dodrio for a more bearable completion process.

When I did this years back I gave up on Taurus after 4 hours of looking and failing the only encounter i found, I tried the encounter glitch that would let me encounter safari zone pokemons outside of the park but couldn't get it to work, mew glitched with different trainers but found no taurus, started playing Silver I believe and found taurus to be not too hard to find so I caught it and sent it back in time lol. If I ever did this challenge again I would take every thinkable shortcut but kodus to you for sticking to it! Great work!

Honestly you were a massive inspiration to me. I ended up completing a living dex in both blue AND yellow. For blue I made like 9 saves of red for trading, while for yellow I ended up trading with Crystal. I also got repeats of my main team (for gen 1 my party was only gengar) to avoid having to put her in the box. It was honestly way more fun than I thought it'd be.

Congrats! 31 hours is actually sounding crazy fast. Considering how many hours I have in recent games and how I've got 20-ish hours in leaf green right now with just 5 badges. and thats on an old DS, so not with frame skip on emulators adding time to it. though, i do remember that rby are pretty fast to play; it also speeds things up if you dont do a challenge or get stuck in grass trying to get 1 particular pokemon with a 1% rate, failing and having to find it again xD

I remember catching them all from using a glitch where you walk up to a trainer and fly away as soon as they see you, then the next wild pokemon will be whatever matches the special attack of your pokemon. That's how I caught them all with just one game and one playthrough.

This was fun. For some reason when I tried to trade Mew from one game to another, the game would glitch out so I did not think that it was possible. Maybe I’ll try it again and if it doesn’t work, then I’ll do it through Pokemon Stadium.

How do you move Pokemon around in the boxes? I can't seem to organize the storage systems.... Want to have them in the correct order...

You play Red version 3 times to get the fossils, why you don't catch and use all the Rare Candys from that to level up Dragonite? You can pick up 11 Rare Candys if you had Surf. After I get bored from Scarlet & Violet I will attempt this challenge. Looks fun =D Great content

In fact it is possible to catch Golduck in Seafom Islands. I believe it appears only in ground level and has a very very very low rate. It only appeared to me once. I believe there were one or two more evolutions you could catch, but I see that in terms of time management it was better to grind.

Celadon cave is an interesting place, but have you ever seen Cerulean mansion? :) (The "Celadon cave" blooper may have been in another part.)

You may have mentioned this somewhere else, but I'm pretty curious about what platform you're playing these games on. Original hardware? Virtual Console? Emulators? That makes a big difference in how costly it is to attempt this challenge, especially when it comes to trading.

Ah such a good end to this series I've completed the pokedex and gen 1,3 and 4 And the living dex in gen 1 And i always like end the game with sitting on the table alongside my (in-game)mom the best way to end the journey

I once completely a pokedex in Pokemon Yellow by using the mew glitch/level 100 gengar glitch, wathever you want to call it, to encounter every pokemon in the game, which is much harder than you think because in order to get Ekans you needed to run into a level 64 Chansey with a specific special stat because the encounters are generated based on stat hex information of the last encounter before you trigger the glitch encounter.

I'm going to attempt something similar. I have pokemon red on my cell phone thru an emulator so I cannot trade unfortunately, however using the glitch you did with mew I can potentially catch every single pokemon thats not in red. I just have to find the right combination of trainers to make the pokemon I need appear. It will undoubtedly take much longer than your runs due to trying to find all these different combos but it may just be possible. I will still catch and evolve every pokemon I can get legit without this trick but for everything else like the starters, trade evolves, and blue exclusive pokemon ill need this trick. Wish me luck lol

This is LTTP, but why didn't you just turn in place in the Safari Zone? Not only does it allow you to encounter Pokemon, it doesn't waste steps. Works in all gens through 6, btw.
