Fun fact: The anime "Paprika" is an inspiration for the hollywood blockbuster "Inception". A lot of hollywood movies took inspirations from Satoshi Kon's work. Susumu Hirasawa's music also fits perfectly in Satoshi's movies
Holy hell! You actually reacted to Parade. I also asked for this, but didn't thought it was coming. It's a very strange music, but it fits the movie so well. The movie is like this music, a crazy, surrealistic experience, and believe me, everytime that song pops the screen will be filled with crazyness and chaos. :D EDIT: Also, I think Paprika was a huge inspiration for Nolan for the main concept ideas of Inception.
@@RTuga02 for inception? there are stirking similaries including the plot, scenes and characters, such as the hallway and elevator scenes. but the scene im specifically refering to that is almost identical is the scene where the main female character, both wearing a similar red wardrobe touch the "background" which proceeds to shatter into glass, revealing a dark industrial looking interior. Everything from the angles, the cinematography, the way the glass shatters, even their red wardrobes are almost identical.
Susumu Hirasawa is a musical genius. He always tries something new, how he can create new interesting composition with all kind of instrument or elecronic music. One song I can recommend is his song: time being proud of its heterogeneity. In this song you can listen his experiments with melodies getting reveresed (like time going backwards).
As a huge fan of Susumu Hirasawa, it was truly satisfying to hear you say you love this song while reacting to it. And I love the way you described the phases of the song. It's not how I've "seen" this song before, but I absolutely understand what you're describing. If this Ko-Fi thing is a simple way to give a donation, which would be a first for me for any content creator, it would just be my way as saying thank you. While it's hard to say Susumu Hirasawa has a particular style that you can pinpoint (he's the same composer as Guts' Theme; two completely different songs and tones), I'd say Parade is a perfect example of his music in a nutshell. As a fan, you listen to Parade and think THIS is Susumu Hirasawa. A few other comments mentioned this, but you can tell he draws inspiration from other cultures, and describing his music as otherworldly sounds apt. One of my favorite songs by him is "The Girl in Byakkoya," which is the opening to Paprika. Since I see your more recent reactions have been to video games and anime, that would be one of my reaction suggestions. If that might be an issue with copyright, I understand. But along the same lines, I'd also recommend "Dream Island Obsessional Park" (also by Susumu Hirasawa) which is the opening to Paranoia Agent (an anime also by Satoshi Kon). From what I read, Paranoia Agent aired very late in Japan, so Susumu Hirasawa composed the opening with the intention to wake the viewer up. Similarly, he composed the ending song, "White Hill - Maromi's Theme," as a sort of lullaby. _Just on your own free time, not for a video,_ if you like what you've been hearing from Susumu Hirasawa, I have a few recommendations. You mentioned you liked that glitchy sort of vocal arrangement that starts and plays throughout Parade. He's done similar things in other songs. Another top favorite of mine that does this is "The Man From Narcissus Space." However, if you want to hear that effect done on the electric guitar, "Ride the Blue Limbo" is another great song. If you want to hear a relaxing song paired with... I'm unsure what to call it--rhythmic nature noises(?), listen to "Tamashii No Furusato." And for an interesting contrast and comparison, he's made a few albums remaking his previous songs, some of which are wildly different takes. Like the song "Sekai Turbine" (or "World Turbine") from the album The Ghost in Science in 1990 is this experimental techno song. But in 2001, he released an album called Solar Ray with "Sekai Turbine 2" on it, and it's now this energetic song with powerful vocals and pounding percussion. I could go on since there are so many great songs in the decades that he's been making music, but I know I've already gone on for way too long. I hope you or anyone else who happens to see this will give those songs a listen.

Yeah, "Paprika" is great anime, I really like it, and soundtrack is great, my favourite track is "Byakkoya no Musume". You should react "Ashitaka Sekki" from anime "Mononoke Hime" amazing instrumental song, just amazing.
I'm late to this party, but I just discovered Atlas' channel. Byakkoya no Musume is also my favourite track from Byakkoya/Paprika OST, and I really hope that more Hirasawa reactions are coming. That track has such a wonderful mixture of longing and hopefulness mixed with melancholy. Hirasawa's vocals are perfect for it.
As a Slavic person, as well as an anime culture enjoyer, I can say that a decent amount of Japanese pop culture, especially of earlier eras has a very distinct touch of Russian singing melodies. From where did it get into anime soundtracks. With the vivid examples of: Shoujo Kakumei Utena OST - Dona Dona, Queen Millennia OST - Maboroshi (Illusion), Mamoru Asada - Saraba Yasashiki Hibiyo, Devilman: The Birth - Opening (1987)

Rest in Peace Satoshi Kon and Kentaro Miura. Susumu Hirasawa, the composer of both Berserk and Satoshi’s films lost both of them, two creators he respected and worked closely to collaborate and make them as memorable as they are today, but I can imagine it must be heavy that he lost two people who we works with.
I had no f'in clue during the parade scene, later I found out that it was a satire on Japanese society. And it blew my mind. I just wish that more people pay attention to this masterpiece.
The composer for this, Susumu Hirasawa who also did a lot of music for Berserk is such an interesting musician. He's one of my favorite Japanese composers along with Kenji Kawai and Yoko Kanno. I don't know how he does it but his music feels so otherworldly and dreamlike.
Yoko Kanno is soooooo good. Until watching Zankyou no Terror, I didn't really care for anime composers enough to look them up. Fortunately, ZnT's music is so "in your face" that I couldn't really ignore it

It fits so well to the opening for the video game as well, I was actually gonna suggest it but I then I realized it may be a weird experience to watch it outta context - not having had any Berserk exposure at all... What do you think? 🤔
@@kayleenilsson3825 I think it’s be fine to experience the song without actually knowing Berserk (though it would enhance the song a thousand time more!). It’s kinda like listening to and be moved by a foreign song that you do not actually understand the lyrics. Besides, it’d be interesting for him to try to imagine what Berserk may be like from the music alone!
Spoilers: The titular Parade that this song is emitted from is basically a rolling tidal wave of hijacked dreams, sweeping through people's minds and carrying them away to become part of chaotic mass, the song is being sung by people caught in it's control.

Seconding Girl in Byakkoya. It and all it's versions were clearly the most prominent ones in the movie. I don't even remember the movie at all but that song stuck with me.

Ghost in the Shell is a phenomenal film. Havent seen - or heard of it- in years. Gonna have to rewatch it. Also I never knew where this piece of music came from! I've heard it so much but never knew its source haha.
You're practically obligated to give Dream Island Obsessional Park a listen now, it's by the same composer but with a more decidedly sinister vibe imo.
I was on the team working on the English translations for the Sony International soundtrack CD for Hirasawa san and Chaos Union years ago. All and all your's is a good analysis. Superficiality of modern life controlling the individual. Though the ChiefsChiLLaXN comment seems correct in context to the plot though of course the lyrics have meaning. Remember in the anime this is very much reflecting a Japanese viewpoint and not so much a global one other than maybe what is universal to everyone. This anime is from the (sadly) late great Japanese director Satoshi Kon. Susumu Hirasawa scored two of his features (the other is Millenium Actress), a limited series (Paranoia Agent) and a work in progress movie that was halted with his death (Dreaming Machine). Kon was greatly inspired by Hirasawa's solo albums and was thrilled to have Hirasawa san participate on around half of his anime. I'm pretty sure the underlying march is inspired by historical Ottoman Empire marches. The glitch vocal is a byproduct of Yamaha Vocaloid technology. He points out he doesn't use Hatsume Miku. Robert Fripp is one inspiring influence. Maybe there are exceptions but generally he's not doing American Rock-n-Roll/R&B melodies or anything that sounds like it The 'rose' reference is 'La Vie en rose' - I remember pointing out that the English equivalent phrase is "life through rose colored glasses" but it was decided to go La Vie en Rose. There is a woman in the song somewhere speaking in Vietnamese. I'm told that was for texture and not related to the Japanese lyrics or commenting on Vietnam in any way
If you lived this please check out Mima's theme from another movie from the same director (Satoshi Kon) called Perfect Blue. Another film from Kon to check is Millennium Actress. All have amazing OST's.
It's very sad that you probably wont listen to Saint Seiya because of how little it is popular in the US, it will never win in a poll. It's, imho, by far the best OST ever made in anime. From Polaris Hilda to Camus's Death, no soundtrack ever conveyed this much emotion EDIT : Just saw you illustrated the community post with Saint Seiya XD, my bad
When the vocals came in, it reminded me of the 90s and the Berserk anime. Nostalgia! I really like Susumu Hirasawa and Shiro Sagisu. They introduced me to the world of anime. Because it's not only an art style, great Japanese dub and story, but also great soundtracks. I'd like to hear more from Bleach in the future and from Fromsoftware games. Incredible adventure. i went and watched Paprika right after seeing this, most unorthodox thing i've ever listened to as far as i can remember. the movie was somewhat interesting too.

If we’re doing lesser known anime song recs, I gotta suggest “Desire” from Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo. A seriously underrated track from a seriously underrated anime.
While I think the lyrics are also meant to be taken at face value and can be understood as they are read (like you did here) I do want to point out that 95% of Hirisawas songs are all meant to be listened as a part of the larger album experience and tell a story over time. Parade is no exception. While it was good as a standalone in the film its meaning is much deeper as a part of the album it was released on. Which is a story about a man finding a city, a sort of alternate plan of existence and thought. Parade as a part of that story is more about how the paradise city he was told to find is an illusion and that he was swept up in a Parade of madness trying to escape.
React to Unravel (from Tokyo Ghoul). React to the original version and the acoustic - you must like haha. After anime week, react to The Witcher 3 soundtrack. There are two I love: "Hunt or be Hunted" and "Silver for Monsters".
You should have listened to the instrumental version, that's what's being used in the movie; also actually watching the mad dream parade marching through the movie landscapes at the same time would give even more depth to what it's conveying.

Dude yeah! This and Guts OST are done by Susumu Hirasawa - that man is a legend, almost every his piece is my favorite. Actually he's written OSTs for a number of anime, maybe you could check them out some time

@@mirelion5328 Yeah *Indra* is one of the best from the first game, the Dreamcast one. It's got the same melody as *Forces II* just slowed down. Same with *Sign II* in the PS2 game, slowed down melody from the opening and works perfectly as the closer to the game 👌

She's a major Japanese composer who's mostly known for her work with anime songs and the now disbanded group Kalafina. For the song I would recommend "Sis Puella Magica!", "Decretum" or "Magia" (all of which are from the anime Madoka Magica, the soundtrack of which is one of the things Yuki is most known for)
Yeah,Paprika is an awesome video, im pretty sure you already have all the intetions to watch it after listening, so i wont bother reccommend it. There are also other crazy songs in that movie,wich is a crazy and gentle movie. I could not really talk about Susumu hirasawa skills, but for sure he's music are all from another world,probably my favourite Soundtrack artist. Otherwordly would be the therm

primarily - you can't analyze Parade from Susumu Hirasawa if not watching firstly Paprika! Because this track was made with really close ties with Paprika, cause Kon was making it with Hirasawa. Parade was also an element not present in the original novel by which an anime film was made. Parade motif was made together by Kon and Hirasawa. SO, analyzing lyrics without knowing what's going on in Paprika can lead to misinterpretation. Lyrics aren't that much about capitalism, but more about ''hegemony'' in all its formats, and meaning is broadened including human's nature of manipulation through any era - esp through the era of technology, technology - which is good but can be used for worse (depending on the user). If you watch Paprika (which I highly suggest), you can understand Parade's lyrics immediately. Also Parade depicts real parade from the anime film, parade in nightmare which is luring people on endless procession to the lunacy. As for Hirasawa being Daft punk fan, not much possible. those elements in his music he developed through his career. He formed a band in '70s calleed Mandrake which made music inspired by krautrock,heavy metal and progressive rock. Later on band changed name to P-Model *(1979) and also music that they made was more into electronic field, post-punk and experimental music. p.s. for Hirasawa and Kon it is a really special case in art, because it's maybe the first case in the sphere of animation when one director drew inspiration from the music of the composer he worked with - same with Hirasawa. anime movies created in collaboration od those two, and the music soundtrack were in tight connection, or more to say collision.
Without having seen the movie and reading the lyrics, to me it seemed to be about political greed and the complacency of the public leading to the social, economic and cultural death of japan. It also seemed very nihilistic about it, as if it's already begun and nothing can stop it anymore
Hirasawa has some amazing standalone albums as well. My favorite of his is "Technique of Relief", check it out if you like his style. It's really incredible
You should react to undertale music that stuff hits different, and if you do start out with fallen down reprise and undertale and home and stuff it’s really good
Tbh the song by itself, divorced from the film, misses so much! Don't get me wrong, I love listening to it by itself, but the way it interweaves with the film... It's just an entirely different world. The naivete of the melody and repetition mean utterly different things when in context.
I just love his work, many of the Berserks (2016) Ost are from him, the only good thing about the remake/continuation of the original anime. They just hit different :)
