Which of Kristi's techniques do you want to employ on your next photoshoot?

Artistic. Wing & motion blur. Had chance to try it with Osprey & a GBH last summer but want a little more blur than I have gotten in the past.

Would like to try more double exposures - especially just rotating camera on same subject.

I appreciate that she emphasized on "conveying the feeling". At the end, we want to connect with the audience through it, to provoke the same feeling we had while capturing the scene.

I love the part about looking “at the edges” of what’s in frame and the part about shapes. Also, good point about putting it in crop mode to minimize post-edit. Thanks Kristi, Nikon, and B&H for this crash course❣️Super helpful for beginner like me 🙏😊

This was so wonderful. I love the 500PF lens. It is super sharp. Right now I am sidelined with bicep tendonitis. Grrrr. Can't wait for it to heal and photograph wildlife again and incorporate Kristi's techniques.

I return this summer to work at Yellowstone, I get two days off a week to explore the park. I shot 18,000 pics last summer, maybe I will surpass that this summer. I shoot Canon R5.

This was a really good video for me, as a novice (or novice+ photographer). Lots of very practical advice in there for shooting animals. I'm trying to remember to stop and think about the shot I want rather than shooting and hoping it turns out well afterward. Thanks!

Kristi, what is the technical advantage, if any, to shoot in DX mode as opposed to cropping in photo editing. Thanks for the great video.

A lot of my photography relies on connecting to wildlife. If I see things closer in my viewfinder it helps me feel that connection. Plus I love getting things right in camera. With the file itself in mind, there is no real advantage.

Pretty interesting that during the hunt both the hunter and the prey had tracking collars on them. What do you think about that?

Great content and I especially like to see you using the Nikon 500mm as I just purchased it recently (from B&H of course) and will be going to Yellowstone in early summer. You mentioned that ISO is many times a variable in your equation. So I am curious whether you use auto ISO along with aperture priority. I have recently begun experimenting with it and I’m finding it fairly useful in fast moving wildlife or birds-in-flight. Interested in your thoughts.
@kristiodom600
@kristiodom600 2 года назад
That is a great choice for settings! The auto ISO on the nikons works great! I am fully manual for my camera settings. If I was going to have one be automated, it would be ISO.

@jeffbeatty6459

Thx for the timely follow up. A couple quick questions if you don’t mind. I can’t recall from the video, but are you using a Tele converter with the 500mm? I have a 1.4 TC that I have used with the 500, but it is not not totally responsive and I’m not sure I would rely on it for a critical photo. Also, I seem to recall that you use the DX crop factor at times. Would that be a better option than using the TC? FYI - I am shooting with a D850 so I have plenty of megapixels to work with.
@michaelsteinman1314
@michaelsteinman1314 2 года назад
@@jeffbeatty6459 I have the same setup and, you are right about the 500mm not being totally responsive with the 1.4 TC. The TC definitely makes it harder to track subjects, so I typically leave it off if my subject is moving quickly or unpredictably. Another thing to consider is that f/8 will be your widest aperture, which lets in less light and might give you more depth of field than you want (especially if you have a busy background). I typically only use my 1.4 TC with the 500mm under three conditions: I have lots of light; the animal is not moving or moving slowly; and I want or don't mind the extra depth of field that f/8 will give me. As for crop mode vs. no crop mode, I usually go with no crop. You'll have more options on how you want to crop in post.
@jeffbeatty6459
@jeffbeatty6459 2 года назад
Michael - thanks so much for the detailed reply. I am totally in sync with your comments regarding the TC. Unless the ideal conditions exist as you have noted I will not risk using it, especially if it is for a “must have” shot. Thx.
