Tractor Supply sells sawdust in compressed bags or you could use Peat moss they also come in compressed bags. You could also use used horse stall sawdust bedding from your local horse stables.
Having a humanure compost pile is getting expensive. $14 a bale of straw when they were $7 when I started this plan. Finding sawdust in my neck of the woods that isn’t redwood is also a challenge. I won’t ever go back to a water toilet and septic system but it isn’t as cheap as it used to be, for me.
Hey Joe, we just started using your method and love it….but I find when I empty the receptacles there is a very strong odor! Our cover material is fine sawdust from a sawmill, but it’s blended with small planer shavings. Is the blended cover material the reason for the odor?
I still find u use alot of materials to soak up the wee, i tryed hemp sawdust coir coir znd wood pelllets , pellets are better but cost alot we dont have space for a 5 gallon buckets so we use half the size ut still have to empty every day , i just dont get it if the can last 6 weeks, if we leave it with lid on it smells , we most only pee in them so i dont know if it that x
Hi Joe! Thanks for all the info. We just started a dry toilet at our remote summer property last year. We had watched endless videos and decided that the most effective method for our rocky surroundings was the pail to barrel method. We have a urine diverter and use wood shavings as our cover material. With the pail to barrel method (which we seal and don't turn), should we be using a new barrel every year? The barrel from last year was half full. Could we use it again this year then start a new one next year? Also it doesn't need to be in the sun? Any other suggestions on the pail to barrel set it and forget it method? I like your pallet compost but in the limited space we have I'm not sure it's an option.
