Liquids can be composted. Some can be poured directly into compost piles, as shown in this video. Others, such as urine and black water, can be collected with cover material, then added to the compost pile. Filmed by Joseph Jenkins, author of the Humanure Handbook (www.amazon.com/Humanure-Handb...) and The Compost Toilet Handbook (www.amazon.com/Compost-Toilet....

I just moved to a little farm. they had several humanure piles about 64 cu. ft. worth. Years ago someone had told them not to add urine, so they pissed on the ground and the humanure was petrified and had been for years!. They thought it was a seven year processes.

Joe Jenkins for what it's worth I just bought, on Amazon, the "Humanure handbook" 4th edition "Shit in a nutshell"! Hopefully I'll get it in a couple of weeks! Thanks for the publication. BTW Most sugary liquids will promote microorganism development. Last time I had some liquid to the compost pile was precisely a "Christmas" drink of some sort. Loaded with sugars. As a left over makes perfect sense in a compost pile beside it kicks the compost into action. On a small and new, compost pile in 2 days jumped to 57C. Not bad! ;-) As you mentioned, urine works just fine, but in my case it's to precious! I prefer to use it diluted on the garden. Work wonders! :-) Cheers

how diluted do you use the urine? and how often?
@crpth1
@crpth1 2 года назад
@@SunFlower-it7lb - I like to keep things simple. SO, I can only say that pee on a water can of, maybe, 6 to 9 liters capacity. And the remaining filled with water. Work REALLY well. About the how often. I better say, whenever I can. Meaning it could be a whole lot more if I had more contributions! ;-) Either case the difference with or without added urine. Is rather amazing! Foliar growth and the deep green color says it all. The fact it's free and available is just contributing for the win win! ;-)

Mr Jenkins, can you compost used vegetable oil? I have about a gallon from frying food at home and wanted to know if the vegetable oil would be consumed by the bacteria. Have you ever tried it?

It’s been rainy this winter. Not freezing but it has soaked my compost bin. My temperature has dropped from 140F to 60F. I’m having trouble getting it to heat again. My straw bale is water saturated and I’m worried that my compost material isn’t getting enough air. Thoughts?
@jcjenkins01
@jcjenkins01 Год назад
Where are you located? Temperatures may drop in the winter depending on how often you're feeding the pile. It's unlikely that the rain is cooling it down. As long as it's not under water, it will be getting enough oxygen.

I have a question: I'm reading The Humanure Handbook right now and I'm planning to start composting humanure in the not too distant future. Only thing is that if you want to compost humanure here in Sweden, you have to have a non permiable bottom to your composting system so there's no chance of liquids leaking into the ground. Does that work as well as composting directly on the ground? My main conern is that the soil life won't be able to get into the pile but maybe that takes care of itself eventually?
@ArtOfHealth
@ArtOfHealth Год назад
The soil microbes have very little to do with your poo and pee. Your waste poo has microbes in it and they will go to work on all the other grass, hay, food scraps and everything else you compost in your bin for the first year. Then you start the second bin for the next full year. By that time, the microbes and heat will have broken down everything in the first bin and you then use it as beautiful compost!
@hin_hale
@hin_hale Год назад
@@ArtOfHealth Thanks for the answer! I was a little unclear on at which point you need the soil life to have access to the material. But your point about a second bin makes a lot of sense.

what about the beer's alcohol content (I assume that given the average beer has around 6% alcohol, you'd have 1/3 of a gallon - ~1L - of alcohol in that bucket)? isn't it toxic for the microorganisms inside the compost pile?

@@austin2842 Happy to report no disasters, but I get up on a stack of cinder blocks and temporarily put a light weight cinder block on one side of the pile for my foot. Once my feet are in position and the bucket handle is in one hand, then I have to get my other hand under the bottom of the bucket so I can control where to pour the contents. I've broken off part of the lip around the bottom of a bucket when I tried to tip the contents of a full bucket with my fingers just under that lip. Nope. Gotta get my whole hand UNDER the bucket in order to lift the bottom edge of the bucket to direct the contents right where it needs to go. Doing this work motivates me to keep doing my chin ups and push ups regularly! Of course, I only have to go through this process when the compost bin is getting around 3/4ths or more full. Generating humanure compost isn't for weaklings!

Mozambique Project: Consultant: Joe Jenkins, Joseph Jenkins, Inc., 143 Forest Lane, Grove City, PA 16127 USA • Ph: 814-786-9085; Email: joe@josephjenkins.com Client: Frisian Urban Sanitation Programme (FUSP), Xai-Xai Municipal Council, Xai-Xai, Mozambique Project Location: Xai Xai, Mozambique, the economic capital of the Province of Gaza, located in the southern end of Mozambique about 200 km north of the capital city, Maputo. Xai Xai is bordered on the north by the Limpopo River, and on the south by the Indian Ocean and is located at an elevation of approximately 10 meters along EN1, the main road from Maputo to Beira. The area of Xai Xai is approximately 135 km2 and it is divided into twelve administrative subdivisions known as Bairros. According to the 2007 census, Xai-Xai’s population was 104,689, or 22,950 households. Project Goals: The primary goal of this project is to collect toilet material and other organic materials and render them sanitized such that they can be returned to the soil as agricultural nutrients without negatively impacting the environment or undermining public health in any way. As this can be achieved by subjecting the organic materials to thermophilic composting, the challenge was to find a methodology that could achieve this goal. Summary: The composting of toilet liquid and market scraps in Xai Xai appears to be very feasible as long as a carbon-based material is available in large enough quantities to combine with the nitrogenous and wet input from the toilets. This project provides an excellent and very unique opportunity, a living laboratory, where liquid sewage can be recycled via composting. The data that can be gleaned from this project could be very valuable and have a world-wide impact. A sister sanitation project at the Tongaat Hulett sugar cane refinery could greatly enhance the quantity and quality of data collected. A parallel toilet system where the toilet contents are collected inside the toilet with bagasse and composted in bins adjacent to the toilet stalls could be established either at schools, homes, or at the sugar cane community, and the two systems (pump truck and direct compost) compared side-by-side for an even more enriching project.

I’ve got a playlist on composting liquid I call “CBCB” (Carbon Based Composting Bin) which is a pile packed full with “just carbon material” (minced leaves, strew, cardboard….) and using my liquid only as the nitrogen. “The long lasting” (I’ve gone over 4 months), very high, and predicable heat attained (easily over 120F to 160F) I hope to get out of the pile to heat a small greenhouse, chicken coop…. some day. I’m open sourcing this thought feeling it holds great possibilities for the Urban Farmer. Joe 🫵🏼 sir have been a major inspiration when it comes to composting the so called no no’s 👍 ru-vid.com/group/PL8OAnpHec404E8OONfkGj1YQw7OqS9Xgq&si=7wtKgKKC5V9H_nZH
