I have been using a bucket and sawdust for six years, following the Humanure system. No wiring, fan or smell. I have to empty it (urine and feces combined) every 5 days or so onto the compost pile, along with kitchen waste. I keep that enclosed with hardcloth and covered with straw. Once the bin is full, it sits for a year before being emptied. A little rough and ready, but it works fine. You can make it esthetically pleasing with a wooden cabinet around the bucket, a wood seat, a bin for the peat/sawdust, etc. As another poster points out, there may be problems with county regulators.

Yup. Total cost a few $. Same end result and no electric needed. My humanure compost is in a separate area and only goes on the fruit trees just to be extra safe.

Researching all the options, but I believe this is the method I will be using, however, can you also throw toilet paper into it, if so, what type of toilet paper? I can purchase a toilet seat that fits on the 5 gallon bucket, but I was hoping it could be an for disposal.
@HolySwordsman1
@HolySwordsman1 6 лет назад
you can, but it drastically slows down the compost. generally, put heavy wiped paper in the toilet(first wipe, covered in poo). second and third wipes put in a separate bin, like a garbage can. try to minimize the amount of paper you do put inside it, but it won't hurt it just slow it down.

I use a C head composting toilet, no issues of smells either. No fan no heater, just a urine diverter into a gallon jug, a mixer for the solid, and you add sawdust. Brand new $600. They were designed for use on sail boats where if there was smells it would cause a big issue. They do provide a vent hose if you need it. But I have not had a need of it.
@nostringsattachedlivingoffgrid
yes we looked at that style of toilet. it was cost for us at the time. In time after we get the build done and save some more money we might invest in a different model of composting toilet
@theineffablehomestead3378
@theineffablehomestead3378 7 лет назад
The only reason I opted for the C Head was for permitting reasons. A professional product rather than DIY is easier to get permitted. However I plan to just DIY one for my actual home build. Thankfully someone in my county just recently went through the whole DIY composting toilet permit process and got the county up to speed on them. So the county is actually now receptive to the DIY versions.

Hahaha, yes it does seem rare to find. Though it did take someone spending the time and effort to educate them on DIY composting toilets to get them up to speed on it.

I have the Sun Mar Exel Electric compost toilet. The most expensive one. I have had it over a year.. and right now I am not to happy with it. Once a year you should make sure to clean the grate to keep it free from debris. If it gets clogged and if you don't clean it.. it will start to stink The only way to access that grate is by removing the panel at the back of your toilet. Meaning you have to move it away from the wall to get to the screws. If you can't do that.. guess what.. you have to remove the drawer and stick your arm way back underneath and hope you can get it clean... which by the way is very hard and a disgusting job, Sun Mar should of came up with an easier way to access that grate. Should of put access panels on each side of the toilet. That grate is for air flow.. and if there isn't air flow.. your whole house will smell every time you turn the drum every other day. So if you don't want to get your hands dirty and full of waste.. don't buy one until they can come up with a better way to clean it.

I would think that your fan would preclude needing the heater. As many Composting toilets don't have them. I know Nature's Head uses a small fan to do the same thing. Just my 2 cents....LOL
@nostringsattachedlivingoffgrid
thanks for your comment but unfortunately this model does not have a switch to turn off the heater. Its a matter of opening the whole thing up and cutting wires. Which we MIGHT do ......or you never know we could save up some more money and get different type of composting toilet.

very Good Compact Toilet. Man can be design and create this type most comfortable utilities, it should be more creative usefullness. The solid part is simply composting is not good. It should be using as fertilizer. Creat bio-gas for cooking before fertilizing. Multi-purpose use. ok my brother. My Idea may be right or wrong. You can correct me, if it is wrong. bye I am from from India.

Honestly, I don't think you need the heater part of it if you aren't peeing in the toilet. The amount of urine going into those toilets is what causes most of the smell and makes the heater a necessity to help it evaporate. I'd unplug it, keep the fan running outside, and call it a success.

got to love solar in the winter...now your down to watching Watts of power...isn't it much easier to fire up a Genny and charge up your batteries for a few hours? seems that most of these off grid systems you have to worry about the slightest current draw...especially the winter... hope you enjoy camping lol
@nostringsattachedlivingoffgrid
We love camping lol that's why we live this way! And watching watts is a part of life now, it's better than having a $500 electicty bill every month and we still have internet/TV/laptops/lights/heat and we don't live in a city! But to each their own and thanks for the comment!

no strings attached living off grid who gets a 500$ electric bill monthly? I was with you til you told that lie. Where did you live , in a compound? Come on dude, even with all the electronics these days nobody gets a bill that size. Especially not two people living anywhere. Trying to exaggerate cost to make your point only sounds like your trying to kid yourself of that foolish move you all made to the woods. Its OK, you can move back with us in regular society. Hey , at least you gave it a try. But don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining . Next!
@jamesrodriquez2863
@jamesrodriquez2863 5 лет назад
@@lennyp4782 Clearly, you have never lived in the country in an all electric mobile home or house with a rural electric company that buys its electricity from the grid. It gets expensive, especially in the winter. I live in town now, heat and cook with natural gas, and don't pay the $400-$500 a month I used to pay, but paying that much is not uncommon for people in rural America. And don't knock "moving to the woods" until you try it. Living off grid has its challenges, but most people who make such a move don't regret doing it.

A well sized solar array will keep the batteries juiced up nicely, and the extra power in summer means a dehumidifier or a/c is an option. Not a bad way to fly. Of course, to your point, having a generator handy is a good call. It's really difficult to design a system that gives you precisely 100% of your power (no more, no less) day in and day out. Having enough battery capacity to go 3-5 days on a charge is great. Then, you can run the generator if you need to (but, please, God! not every day!) just to top off the batteries...typically on overcast days. In my area (New England) cloudy days are often windy days, so a small wind turbine is a lovely addition. For those overcast days with no wind...well, ride it out, and keep the generator handy! :-)

@oldyellerschannel4676
@oldyellerschannel4676 5 лет назад
It is supposed to take urine at the same time, it actually needs some moisture in order to work properly. If it is too dry, you have to add some water. Urine IS the water you need.
