The ultimate tiny house incinerating toilet in my humble opinion is the Incinolet. The Incinolet has been my tiny house toilet choice for the last 7 years. This incinerating toilet option is a perfectly viable and awesome option for a tiny house lifestyle. That said, it's not the solution for everybody. Your choice of toilet is very much predicated on your personal tiny house set up, access to utilities, budget and so on. Here I go over how it works and why THIS toilet works well for my tiny home set up.

We are debating to add a propane style to our Incinolet. I had thought to attempt a gasifier to supply the gas inlet on the propane style toilet. A lot of thinking to happen before we make any decisions on purchasing one. Hoping to find one used on Craiglist or Marketplace to test out the theory of it all.

We have had an Incinolet toilet for 9 months - the very basic model. Items that they shared in this video that differ from our experience... We have to empty the ash tray after one day's use for 1-2 people or it doesn't fully burn the waste, which is really gross and not as advertised. Also, there will be a "burning pee" smell outside where it vents and if you're down wind of it, you'll wonder what the funky smell is. We feel when the unit is burning/working it's loud, louder than anticipated. We took to heart the reviews on Incinolet's website and were very excited to get one of these for our lake place, because there wasn't an indoor bathroom and this was much more cost effective than installing septic, but now we're looking into septic. This product just isn't operating as hoped - the not fully burning everything and pulling a pan that isn't all ash has been difficult to handle. Also, we were disappointed that when we reached out to the company about this issue, we got no response back. Also, we can't leave a review on their site - reviews are only by invitation only, it seems!

Hmm. That's not been my experience at all. Is it possible that your toilet's internal temp setting is too low? I saw that when I did a deep clean on the toilet that there is a dial in the toilet that adjust the temp it runs at. Also, are you running the vent tube up high or just out at ground level? If you are bothered by any scents, I would recommend that you vent the exhaust tube up towards the roof line. The unit is really designed to empty the ash bowl every day, but check the manual on how to set the temperature and burn time, they may be set incorrectly. If you are still getting incomplete burns, increase the burn time from 1 to 1.5 hours. Also the manual details how the unit uses a catalyst to remove odor from the exhaust. The catalyst works after it heats up, so you might try starting the burn cycle when you first arrive at the toilet to let it heat up some and then press start again to reset the cycle after pressing the foot pedal to dump the contents. It appears to be a venting issue, if the vents is plugged,unproperly installed or too narrow, then it will not evaporate liquids properly and one will see chunks instead of dust.

Yes, the biggest drawback is the odor! We had one in our floating home for 20 years. The smell always bothered me. We had a composting toilet previously and with a woman in the house it wouldn’t compost fast enough !

Bought one at a yard sale several years ago for only $250! Had never even heard of them before, just took a chance. It appears everything is there & it seems it will be very easy to install once the micro-cabin is finished. Thanks for the tips!

Yup, can use it while it's burning the previous usage in the burn chamber. Toilet just emits the humming sound of the vent fan extracting smoke to the outside. It's a great toilet solution. What is your particular implementation that you are looking to use one of these in?

I’m just tossing out ideas; but maybe increased volumes of unburnt waste might cause incomplete burns, when you activate the burn process later... sort of similar to what would happen if you tried to broil a 4” thick steak, as opposed to a more normal 1” thick steak, in an oven. The outside would be burnt to a crisp; but the inside might still be raw. Another thing is that, if you don’t burn the waste immediately, the foul odors (which none of us enjoy) might begin to run rampant.

Great video. Our outhouse service is going away so we are considering this product. $2000 may seem high, but I think the price is far less than installing a septic system, especially when our cabin is on a large hillside. Thanks for this great video. I have been skeptical about this product, but this really looks good.

Yes, it's a great septic alternative for sure. Especially true if you live in a tricky spot where septic is even more difficult and cumbersome (expensive) to install. This toilet has performed better than expected and I definitely highly recommend it. My assumption is that you have easy access to electricity?

Also helps if you are trying to conserve ground water being aquifer levels. I’m considering buying one for a 5th wheel camp site rec center so no septic and no crapping with coyotes 😂. However, @TinyIndustrial I have a good question: If you run out of paper liners could you us Junk Mail and old Bills to crap on and burn? If so, there are a whole bunch of Politicians I want to make printed copies of so I can Delicate on their face and then burn it 😂. Just kidding, my days of urinal target practice jokes are long over but Bills and Junk Mail I have plenty of to burn. Could you try this out for me and see if it works? I’m very interested. Also, could you run this off a 50amp service if you wanted one in your RV as well or running a camp site off 50 amp service? Thanks for your time.

Propane or hydrogen could be a much quicker burn. But man for 2000 bucks it by far beats the price of the newest model out at 15,000. The new ones have only a 15 min burn. I guess burn time shouldn’t be that much of an issue if a person can go and another person can go while the other one’s burning and they can drop it in the mist of the burn so other person can go etc. I’m sure this isn’t possible but it would be cool if it was.

@@EmpoweredPercussion from my research, another person can use it immediately after someone else did, you just have to restart the cycle, and you may have to possibly run a 2nd cycle due to the additional "load" size.

You mean the draft from it pulling air out of the structure and that creating a draft somewhere else? If so, yeah, it does do that. I usually minimally open a window in the bathroom for it to draw air in.

Thanks! Dax Shepard, I've gotten that before and consider it to be a big compliment since he's a few years younger than me. ;) On a sadder note, would strongly advise against using one of these in a wet bath. Electricity and water are not a good combo plus running one of these in a van would require a some form of electricity to be available on a broad and abundant basis. Wouldn't recommend for your situation. :(

For apartments or on the road rv,trailer or van life I think this this is best option but for a house with a good amount of yard space I prefer the compost method.

Hi Andrea. Thanks for the kind words. I won't go so far as to say that it can't work in an off grid scenario. It's more about whether it's the best option for an off grid scenario and if you want to invest in the additional infrastructure (generator, solar panels, batteries) to make it happen. Does it make sense to have a $10,000 solar set up to power a $2,000 electric toilet? Do you want to run a generator for 90 minutes every time you use the toilet? It can be done, but if you watched my other video on toilet options: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kIhGTT_uj9k.html it's more about choosing the toilet that makes the most sense for your budget, needs and environment that the toilet will be used in. So all that being said, can you, for example, have a standard flush toilet in a school bus conversion? Sure, but it mostly would only make sense if the bus is permanently parked in the back yard of a house that has ample water and sewer availability...you get the idea.

Ah, yes, and off grid scenario does not work for this kind of toilet (unless you want to buy a lot of very expensive solar equipment). So, are you using a composting toilet at the moment?

Yes. It's kind of a Luggable Loo deal, using an RV commode with a liner instead of a bucket. I use cedar chips or equine bedding ($5.99/40 lbs) as the compost.

But what if you lived in say, a shed. 10x20. And had a dedicated solar panel system for it, or maybe a generator? It is expensive but man, imagining it seems like such a payout.

I think it’s worth the price. You don’t have to worry about sewage and trying to figure out how to get rid of it. I hope the papers are from recycled sources. That’s really my only concern

That's right. The source of the paper liners I'm not sure of. They are a kind of wax/parchment type paper since it has to be resistant to liquids.

Yes, that's the vent fan that you are hearing. Pulls the smoke out of the house and vents to the outside. Without an active fan extracting air, this toilet would smoke up the house pretty bad... It is a bit loud, true. I can sleep fine though even with it running. Kind of like white noise.

I do not have a backup source of power. If the power goes out that can be a problem. Would have to head into town and use a public toilet or similar. Really bad is when the power goes out during the burn cycle since it stops venting to the outside and can lead to a smoke situation in the tiny house. Not dangerous, but not pleasant. Fortunately that doesn't happen very often. Hope that helps. Do you have a tiny house that you are looking for a toilet for?

I think they have a propane option. Kind of a bulky and cumbersome thing to have in a van too. You would have to install it on rails with a flexible vent tube or similar. Likely not your best option. How far along in the van build are you?

I'm looking at options for a tiny house on land that I own, and it is well water out here that requires an electric pump, now im wondering on the energy comparison of this burning vs the energy used from the electric water pump to fill the toilet up. I d9nt know how you wouod even test it.

Put a plastic bag in your traditional toilet, add some peat moss, take a dump, tie it up, and dispose as trash. Pee into your black tank only. Drain into a bucket, pour on trees in nature as urea fertilizer. Not on Redwoods or Sequoia. Done.

Wait so it requires an exhaust even though your model is fully electrically powered? What about the propane gas/electric hybrid models? Do those require multiple vents? I'd imagine they're harder to install and you'd have to procure a second utility resource but it would be interesting to compare how much more efficient a gas burning model could be.

Right, the exhaust is what expels the smoke from the burn process out of your structure. Think of it as doing what your range hood does over your stove. Incinolet I think used to make a propane model, but they don't anymore. I know that there is some company that I think still does do a propane version. If they send me one of their toilets, I'd be happy to test it out. :)

Great video. So in the case that people are in a cabin bigger than a tiny cabin and many people have to go at once, perhaps there is a better design? I’m thinking if people go and they do the flush; the paper could slide out of the unit into a outdoor incinerator near by. It could be much bigger and burn much hotter with propane or another alternative gas. The military must have invented something like this?

Yes, there is likely a better way or at a minimum a different model/mechanism to suit a larger group of people/users. Part of the appeal though is that the whole thing is self contained and that you 'can' travel with it as long as you wind up somewhere where you have a source of power.

Appreciate you sharing this review. I have planned on buying this toilet for my tiny home which is in the planning & financing stages . I did not know how much energy they consumed. What kind of set up would it take to use it off grid?? is it possible at all?

Hi. Yes, it is 'possible' to use it off grid. It comes down to whether or not it still makes sense to have this toilet in that kind of scenario though. A flush on the incinolet is about 2Kwh of power. From there you can figure out what that would take in regard to batteries and solar cells to charge those batteries. Figure maybe two flushes (night) as a conservative nightime/no recharge scenario. I think you'll find that it will require big money in batterie$ and panels. As I said, there is likely a better option for your off grid set up. Hope that helps.

in my estimation you will need a 300ah battery (better would be 3 100ah batts in serious to increase the voltage maybe 4 as 48v is more common than 36v) higher power systems work better at higher voltages. that is enough power for ONE FLUSH (4x100ah is enough for 2 flushes) then depending on where you live for example here in NM I bet I could get away with 3x400w solar panels or 4x330w solar panels. IE use the toilet at night. then in the morning solar panels charge up the battery in about 3 hours then you can use it again. every 3 hours with good sunlight. go with a couple more solar panels and during the day the solar will almost match power consumption. The toilet is crazy expensive at $2300 but the CONSUMABLE cost (E and liners) is also quite high almost $1 per use. so twice a day is $60 a month. around $800 a year if used twice daily. so the ROI on the solar battery setup at least won't be too long especially with used panels. around 3 years I would guess which is not such a bad ROI actually.

Yes, definitely. You and use it and not flush...then use it again later and then flush. That works fine for wizzes. Cuts the electricity usage in half that way. :)

@@TinyIndustrial Ocean Cruisers are allowed to discharge raw swage 3 miles out. Garbage too as long as the trash has no plastic. Larger boats have huge holding tanks with treatment devices so the sewage is a bit cleaner. Chinese fishing boats are notorious for not following any rules & some have ‘heads’ that are a toilet with a hole into the ocean on a deck that hangs over the stern. Thank you! I will go with a composting head for now!

Hi, thanks for the comment and the questions. 1) If you just pee into it, you can use it twice before 'flushing' and running a burn cycle. Everything else, I would suggest you flush every time. 2) Emptying it depends on amount of usage. I would suggest emptying it every 10 flushes or so. That could be 3 days or two weeks. if you only spend part of your time at the location where the toilet is. Depends how long it takes you to use it 10 or so times. Make sense?

Funny, I went to the countryside, they have this setup like a diy incinolet but made from marble, with an exhaust connected to it going high up the ceiling. Inside the "incinolet" bowl is like a wide metal pot hanging with like small coals burning inside of it and underneath it like 24/7 and is filled with coal every 6 hours. There's a lot of wood around so no problem with making coals. Poop capacity would be like a bucket full of poop and coal, so probably 3-5 days. They take it out when the poop doesnt smell anymore and completely burned out, like a huge pot full of poop lol and use it as fertilizer after grounding the now toasted poop to ash. No wonder the veggie that I ate there taste a little bit earthy...

It turns everything into dust. Liquids are evaporated. The fine dust that remains can be easily disposed of every so often. Not sure if it would have a high value as a fertilizer or similar.

I generally just wipe it down the cleaning wipes. Since the all of the usage of the toilet winds up the in the paper liner, it keeps the interior of the toilet rather clean (all the metal parts). Are you considering getting one?

Some years ago when I first saw this brand of incinerating toilet, they had electric, propane, and kerosene models (not sure if they still have all three types -- I'll have to look). To combat any exhaust smell they had a catalytic unit that installed in the vent pipe and removed the smell, otherwise run the vent pipe up to above roof level and attach a rain/snow cap. On the electric model that you have, what is the amperage requirement (assuming 120 VAC/60 Hz line)? Is it 15, 20, 30, 50...Amps? Nice review. :)

Thanks! Yes, I've seen some of the other incarnations of this as well. I believe that mine is hooked up to a dedicated 10AMP breaker...possibly a 15. Not sure. I run the whole house on 30AMPs. That works for the most part with only occasional tripping of the breaker when I'm using too many things.

@@tegan71969 he could have the temp turned down. Whatever the rating for wattage use is, it's always based on max settings, this is required by law. So if his heat isn't tuned up to max, this could easily operate on a 15 amp breaker. I also have multiple 1,500 watt space heaters that I have ran on 15 amp circuits (15 amp rated wire and 15 amp breakers). It's easily doable.

Yes, I keep it lower so that I don't exceed the overall amps. Would rather have an individual breaker pop than all the lights going out at once. Ten seems to work fine for the most part.

They're great, as long as you've got mains power or another way to feed it a full kilowatt hour for every burn. If there's ANY unburned ash, either the thermostat is defective, or your use requires increasing the burn time, which is adjustable. Could also be an exhaust constriction, or if there's a bathroom exhaust fan, it will fight against the fan in the Incinolet. You need positive air flow into the bathroom.

I think that it's lower than that since once it hits temp, it just cycles. Much like an oven does. Initial usage high and then it tapers while cycling through the remainder of the burn/flush cycle.

Hi. You know, that's likely the toilet option I know the least about. Is that a propane fired toilet? I'm not sure what they would use electricity for other than the ignition and the venting fan. If that is the case, you could likely use it quite well with a solar set up, but like I said, I just don't know enough about it. It's pretty pricey too, no?

Aside from emptying the ash out of it every now and then, it is pretty much self cleaning. This is because you use a paper liner each time and that gets burned as well. It's part of what makes it a great solution.

I don't travel with this tiny house. It is very much 'parked' on the land that I own. If you wanted to travel with this toilet, then yes, you would need a generator or other source of electricity (not solar) to power the toilet.

I would say that using solar to power this toilet is not impossible, but it's highly impractical given the massive amount of equipment needed to do so. There is likely a better toilet scenario for you if you have only solar to depend on for powering this device.

Considering installing in a cabin that will be used for Airbnb. My thought is that some renters will neglect to use the paper liner. What will happen if waste is incinerated without the liner?

If you don't use a liner you create a huge mess. Liquid will simply run into and through the unit and come out in a puddle on the floor. Remember that while you are sitting on the toilet, the burn chamber is sealed closed. It only opens when the foot pedal is pressed down. I would NOT recommend this kind of toilet for for a rental situation. Get a 'Dry Flush' toilet if you are going to be renting out the house/structure. Hope that helps!

No worries. It's all self contained. The toilet doesn't get hot to the touch or eminate any heat. It's just hot in the burn chamber where it needs to be and no where else. Pretty remarkable product in that way.

Different toilets have different advantages for different situations. I love the Incinolet since it was the best solution for my particular house setup. The smell is minimal. If the combustion smell bothered you, you could always run a longer exhaust pipe up to the roofline of the house. That would eliminate all odor. It doesn't bother me, so I have done that.

This seems a dream - I'm petite and getting older so lifting and hauling composing or cassette toilets is going to become an issue. I have an actual Shack (boathouse my g.fathaer fitted out) on a beach that only gets used May-Oct and only by me and an occasional guest. Has had electricity since late 40s/early 50s but new environmental regs means cesspool no longer an acceptable option. Not cheap but would mean I could use the beachhouse/shack for actually living and not just storing chairs and changing into bathing suit!

Yes, a new liner is needed for every flush. You can pee in there though and not flush...pee again a bit later and then use a single flush/burn cycle to eliminate two pee sessions. If you get what I mean.

Yeah, I'm not sure that I would think that this toilet would be a good choice in an Airbnb scenario. In fact, I would advise against it. It won't take long for someone to use it without a liner and that leads to a very not fun clean up job involving taking the entire toilet apart. No, newspaper would not work. The liners are a wax paper and don't allow fluids to soak through. They actually hold liquid in the v-shape that the liner takes on in the bowl of the toilet. Car keys, pets and toys in the toilet will not be seen or heard from again...

For your use, get a low flush model, or one that has a high pressure pump. Go into a Starbucks toilet, lift the tank lid and check the brand name of the gizmo in there. This is a pump that forces water to shoot out. It uses much less water as it has jet power. The noise is scary so little Johnny will not be playing with it. Do not get any other type of toilet for Airbnb.

Installed for my grandmother. Had to put over old toilet flange and rubber pads to lift it level off floor. Connection to pvc with rubber union seems weird. Ran straight through. My dryer vent was cracked from incinolet so had to buy a new one at HD. Do you know if flushable wipes are okay for this?

Hi. Nice of you to get one of these for your grandmother. In regard to flushable wipes...I would imagine that it would work. That said, I wouldn't recommend doing it. 1) they will burn less readily since they are wet. 2) they may contain some form of alcohol, which would definitely be bad if that were the case. 3) not sure how 'clean' they burn. Scent, odor, toxic fumes, etc. 4) not sure what and how much residue they leave behind. May lead to adhesion to burn chamber. More frequent need to clean and so on. Bottom line is it could go fine for a while, but I wouldn't do it. You can check on their site to see if they have an official answer to that particular FAQ. Hope that helps. What prompted the switch to electric for her?

@@TinyIndustrialthsnks!! Her cottage on lake septic problematic. So we switched over to this seasonal solution. Dedicated 240v, seems to work well. I wanted to ask company also if pvc and flange min distance as this is a cottage, my pipe is literally 8" to outside with dryer vent. Was worried it would blow buring debris. Blower seems way stronger than I thought. I assume screen prevents that inside unit.

Great. 240V is likely a much better experience than my 110V. I think that the burn cycle is shorter overall on the 240. They are built like tanks and I haven't had any issues with mine in the years that I've had it (intermittent use). I have never seen any debris or similar be expelled from the pipe. Mine (as you can see in the video) points down at a 90 degree angle with a guard to keep vermin out. This has always worked fine. Emits a bit of smoke at the beginning of the burn cycle and then that's about it. Hope your grandmother is as happy with it as I am.

Hi. You run a burn cycle after every use. If you use the toilet during a burn cycle (that's fine to do), you simply hit the start button again and it resets the clock on the burn cycle and starts a complete burn cycle again. Hope that answers your question?

Hi. The toilet needs a dedicated vent. Exhaust exits the back of the toilet and needs to be routed to the outside. Simply having a vent in your bathroom would not suffice. You need to run the exhaust from the back of the toilet to the outdoors. Hope that helps.

Would you be able to help me find a link to a toilet I saw several years ago? It uses capacitors to flash burn waste with plasma. Since it can trickle charge, it is compatible with solar. The toilet in this video gives me the impression of a toilet on top of a toaster oven. :)

Hi! Thanks for your video. I have seen your comment regarding Airbnbs and that you wouldn't recommend in that scenario. I live in Hawaii where we don't have sewer systems so, to be environmentally conscious, I am trying to avoid adding anymore toilets to the cesspool. I think this would be a good solution but am also worried about the guests not using the liner. My setup would be outdoors so my first question is: if the guest forgot to use the liner could I just hose the whole thing down and let it drain off the wood platform? 2. Does the liner really catch all the waste? We have a household member with IBS (which can be kind of explosive sometimes) it seems that the bowl and lid would need to be hosed down regularly to stay clean since there's no water passing through and the paper liner doesn't look like it's a perfect tight seal fit. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks for the comment. Not using a liner is a disaster. An ex girlfriend of mine peed into the unit without a liner. Urine ran out the bottom of the unit and I needed to take it apart and did a clean out. Since it has electrical components "hosing it down" is not an option. In regard to the second part of your question, the liner catches 98% even in dire situations. The remaining two percent can be eliminated with some 409 spray and some rubber gloves and a few paper towels. Not fun, but you'd have to clean a conventional flush toilet in some way on occasion as well at some point. Yes, in the end lack of liner use would be my main concern with Airbnb guests...

No. The wax paper liners that the toilet uses do not absorb or let liquids and moisture through. A newspaper would and you wouldn't want that. If you want and have the time and energy to do so, you can fold the liners yourself. Incinolet sells a template that makes folding them pretty easy. I find that they are affordable enough so that I don't feel a need to do that DIY step of making them myself.

This is good for RV or conversion van. Need to find a way to use less electricity.

Convenience comes at a cost. In this case that cost is high power consumption. I still think that toilet is great for my implementation. Happy I got it. Conversion van would make this harder to use for sure unless you are only staying places that have ample external electrical supply. There are likely better ways to avoid holding tanks and so forth in a van set up that are preferable to using this toilet. If you do integrate this into a van conversion, I'd love to see a video on that. Will you be documenting the conversion?
