I didn't want to go through the work of cutting a pvc tube like some of the other videos I found on youtube; primarily since the desk/chair I use is shared among the family and we all have different height preferences/needs. After feeling skeptical about this fix I figured if it worked for everyone else (in the comments) then I have nothing to lose. Let me tell you, if you're like me and you're not sure at first glance at this video, IT WORKS! Took me like 3min to do and most of that was just looking for a flathead screwdriver since the tools are shared in the house as well. I've been sitting on my chair for about an hour now and the sinking issue which was almost instant upon sitting down is completely gone. I will provide updates if anything changes but WD-40 did the trick so far and I'm happy that this chair we share as a family is still adjustable. No fixed height like with a PVC pipe. I don't mind doing this quick fix as needed. Thank you!

I used 3-in-one oil because it's a little heavier than WD40 and it fixed this problem immediately. I only had to do it once and I had the chair upside down so the oil ran down into the cylinder. Thanks for the information, it fixed an annoying problem.

Pro tip, lubricate the rod at an angle so the lubricant drips down into the cylinder (the part under the chair). I'm not sure but I think it's more about lubricating the o-rings. My theory is that they get dried out and don't hold a proper seal. This actually works. I had to do it twice but it works.

I was skeptical (how could oil solve a problem where something moves TOO MUCH?) but I've been sitting here 20 minutes after spraying it and I'm still at the same height. Thumbs up! Edit: OK, it still sinks but just takes about 25 minutes now instead of 10 minutes. Somewhat of an improvement but it didn't really solve the problem.

WoW!! It really does work !!!! It was quick & easy!!! Thank you!!! After applying and a couple of strokes, my chair doesn't sink anymore and I've got the original soft 'bounce' when sitting restored as when it was new 20 years ago ... 🙂In my case, I used Rust Check coat & protect rustproofing that I've sprayed on many demanding jobs over the years. It's an oil which sticks well to anything you spray it on. I wouldn't mind having to spray it occasionally over the years if required ... :-)

This worked for me but I would recommend sewing machine oil or similar thin oil as WD40 vanishes over time, it's not really a lubricant but a water displacer (WD), degreaser and general unsticker.

IT WORKS! I ve used pig lard (literally) on a shaft and rings. Just moved it up and down few times and its done. Easy and simple
@sumgai7
@sumgai7 Год назад
So: pig lard is a great industrial grease - it's been used in bearings in plenty of factories! (and leftover bacon grease makes a pretty good cutting lubricant for lathe/machining work!) AND: if you've got some leftover, it makes a terrific pastry/pie crust -- and today is pi day! :-) (Don't ask me how I know all this - but, yeah. Have actually used bacon grease on a machine lathe and it works great - maybe not *quite* as well as the exotic sulfur cutting fluids, or Re-Li-On - which according to the SDS has a chlorinated paraffin wax? - and is just plain magick for s/s, but anyway! - bacon grease and pork fat work pretty darn well as cutting/tapping greases for standard metals -- and make terrific pastries too! (It's like the classic Saturday Night Live product: Shimmer! (It's a dessert topping - it's a floor wax!) www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/shimmer-floor-wax/n8625

@themdg
@themdg Год назад
Thanks for this vid! This is probably a lot like a motorcycle front shock. Dirt and tiny nicks on the cylinder cause the fork oil to leak. Usually cleaning and buffing that cyl. will restore the seal. I assume adding WD40 is about the same for these chairs...fix the seal. I bet a nice clean on that cylinder would help as well. I'll give it a shot!

Wow im shocked that this worked. Thinking about it i was saying how is grease going to make it from sinking. It would just make it more slippery which in turn would create the chair to sink. I looked on amazon and was about to buy these 3 plastic clamps you put on the main bar but didn't like the fact they were plastic and was reading some of them were snapping in ppl. I decided to try this method and I am shocked that the WD40 worked. Great video dude!

Thanks for making me take it apart though I was resigned to it being the hydraulic cylinder, but after I unclipped base, I pressed the handle and it magically worked ! It looks to be in good nick and fine and is holding up. Didn't need the WD40 at all (and no need for any tube or aluminium can inserts). Two of the pairs of wheels come off daily, so I have to replace those and I a piece of leather I bought 30 years ago will cover the seat and arm tears.

Excellent video! And honestly, it’s less work than other tutorials, that tell you to just fix it in place. BUT! You are using WD40. That’s a light oil that evaporates. For that kind of duty, I recommend using some sort of greece. I couldn’t find mine, so I went with body lotion. Use something thick. You can go the Boeing route and use dish soap, but your chair will crash and burn. But use greace😉

using heavier grease, and first disassemble all and clean the tube, rod and all components... how deep is your chair? look at the distance between the cylinder and the chair base from under it. if the cylinder is not even with the base and outstands more than 2 finger then you could put some piece of paper/aluminium foil between the housing and the cylinder... ??
