Thrift flip time! I needed a place to edit videos and send emails... so let's see if we can make a wood and metal computer desk that I found at Goodwill for $22.50 and a $20 wood bookcase from the ReStore work!
I couldn't bear to see a big black monitor in my sacred creative space, so we need to conceal that with some decorative metal sliding doors. Overall, I think we achieved something classic, vintage inspired, and industrial in all the right ways! Let me know what you think!

I think the desk looks great and can totally relate to the frustration of choosing stain colours. The leather on those basic handles was genius, as are the screens (so great you can hide your monitor away when not in use).

Yeah I think I got lucky on the stain color this time… or maybe I’m finally getting the hang of choosing stain 😂 And yeah I’m stoked about hiding the monitor!

Good afternoon Andrew! Another wonderful transformation. My only critique about the editing workstation is the direction of the wood grain on the printer drawer. I probably would have run it the same direction as the 2 above drawers. (Maybe the wood piece would only support the final direction..not sure) I always like using natural light for a creative work surface. (like your planned work top to span the space from filing cabinets to workstation) You could consider installing the creative work surface the same height as the desktop. Then you could flawlessly move from editing to craft/design work in that fabulous wooden rolling desk chair. If you stand while performing those creative tasks, then the higher work top would be preferable. Be kind to the back. Your older self will appreciate the kindness. It's always a joy watching your creative efforts. Cheers.

Andrew where did you get picture rail? I can’t find it in wood. Mine has been removed in my c 1905 house and I need a bunch. ❤

A diy pegboard with larger holes and dowels can look super nice. Another plus is that you can also put shelves on dowels on it... You might think about ( if finding metal file cabinets is easy in your area) Frankenstein-your work table out of parts and pieces. Like a long metal work top and side, etc... that might be really cool with your metal cabinets and you’re so good at mixing stuff together! Edit to add: oh maybe even the ikea shelves could be hung on pegboard with longer dowels? Also maybe a distressed metal paint finish on them to kinda match those terrific metal cabinets)

It looks wonderful! So impressed with the finished desk, it turned out beautifully. Have you considered using a French cleat system on the wall where you want to hang canvases or easels? I think something like that would work in your office space. You could use a metal fixture system from a hardware store, but with your parents and tools it would probably be easier to manufacture one out of wood. It allows for flexibility as far as arranging the hanging items on a wall. Just a thought, excited to see what you come up with!

Hey Lisa! Thank you so much for sharing this idea! My mom just read your comment and sent it to me haha. Love the wood French cleat idea as a full wall feature! Practical and flexible but also giving a nice pattern and texture that the room really needs! Great solution 🙌🏻🎉🙏🏻

You packed SO MUCH information into this episode I had to watch it twice! Sanding? I totally felt your pain, kiddo. The finished product was definitely worth all the effort, every bit of which shows. The room itself is stunning, and the picture rail was absolutely the right call. Your parents are amazing and should be declared National Treasures. Queenie is cuter than the law allows! Between assembling a cohesive stream of footage and recording a masterfully instructional commentary packed with personality, this was probably as much effort as the project. And every bit as successful. Fantastic job!

Fark. AMAZEBALLS! If you can, could you darken the file holders under the little drawer on the desk? Just for cohesion (minor in the bigger scheme of things). Love love love your brass light that you’ve attached to the shelves ❤️ How about adding mirrors (distressed look?) high up to help bounce light around the room? Could add another ‘industrial’ look to the room. High up space doesn’t always have to be used for storage. I like the way you repurpose frames from shelves etc to hold things - fabric, rolled up paper etc. You could also put a big plant inside it sitting on top of your filing cabinets. Pretties it up & adds something organic to the room while still keeping the industrial look. What do you think? It’s all coming together!!

My goodness, the desk is the perfect fit! As is your monitor in the shelving!! To use some of the height, you could create a thin walkway mezzanine on the angled wall above the fireplace, with a library ladder up to it. Maybe bookshelves on the wall up there??

Trè chic! I had to laugh at myself 'cause for a second I thought you were closing off the one doorway completely! Silly me! 🤣 The fact that you're making more "counter space" is superb! How heavy do fabric bolts become? I imagine the walls are stronger than ones built these days, but would they still be able to hold the weight? :)
@ericaeschenbacher4921
@ericaeschenbacher4921 11 месяцев назад
You should be super proud of the progress you've made here. Never apologize for a pivot in the design. Life and design is never a straight path😹 I love how your design on the fly desk turned out! To use those high ceilings, why not use the picture rail as it's old fashioned original purpose? Ive seen some really cool pic rail hooks & chains on Amazon that you could then hang extra canvases and other light weight items. For heavier things and possibly fabric, a horizontal wood closet dowel rod and S hooks meant for plants ( 2 pk at dollar tree) hang wooden crates for adjustable storage, maybe for the folded fabrics or if still on the roll insert dowel and hang like they do at the fabric store. 😻

Maybe for fabric storage you could hand loops of leather and slide the bolts in. Like one loop on each end. Also I love hooks near the ceiling and hang bags full of stuff. I don't know if it would work for your needs but it's great in kids' rooms(I use old backpacks)

I, too, hate the look of a computer desk. The only thing, really, remaining from the original computer desk here is the little pull-out keyboard shelf. I realize it’s practical, but it’s also ugly. I’d probably take it out, save it for some other project, and leave the keyboard on the desk top. I respect your sliding door idea, using metal sheets, but I was thinking tambour or some other mcm material would be more beautiful and fit with the overall feel of the new desk better. But I get that the metal legs and the metal sliding doors work together. I want to know what color you want to paint the floor! What is the material on the floor now? Anyway, thanks for the video. Always a lot of food for design thought!
@REISSUED
@REISSUED 11 месяцев назад
I actually agree about the pull out keyboard thing! I left it because I was thinking that I would need my laptop to sit that little bit lower. However, I edited this whole video with the laptop up on the desktop… plus the slide doesn’t work all that well. So I might lose it.

If I had a studio I would make this unit I saw in an antique store a few years ago. Purchase one or two pieces of thicker plywood, drill approximately 1 inch hole in it every 6 to 8 inches (guess on the spacing) all over the plywood. Then you cut dowels to place in the holes. You can use the dowels to hang things or make it a shelf with a piece of wood across the dowels. I liked the idea because you can move the dowels easily to configure what type of storage you need at the time. The one I saw was natural wood probably polyurethane on it. BTW desk turned out nice! Enjoy your creativity.

Great ideas and execution for your studio! I love what you and your parents did with the old desk and the hutch. You mentioned you made space for your empty frames behind one of the filing cabinets and also said you wanted ideas for the height of the room. Why not hang your your empty frames from the high chair rail as they used to do in these older homes?! They were typically hung using wide ribbon or cording. Just a thought and it could be nice to see what frames you have procured as “art in themselves”! Good luck as you move forward. I love your art and creativity.

Nice job on that desk Andrew!, and the leather on those handles . . . gave me an idea, I want to make a guitar rack and was going to cover the rod in leather instead of that horrid yellow surgical tubing . . . and really didn't want to do all the sewing involved . . . Not sure on storage solutions for up high, other than shelves and some sort of a rolling stepladder, a stepladder chair combo? And the desk lamp, wish you'd have touched on it a bit. For the most part your folks look like they are enjoying helping.

Extra credit for the brass clips on lamp over your desk. This is custom made for YOU. I am thinking about making a false ceiling in my hallway, dropped with maybe 2 inches all around, then just use led christmas lights for just a glow all the way around, on a dimmable switch. I wonder why you couldn't do the same thing in your office? 4X8' luan board ($20.00) framed out for support. Any seams or joints showing could just be joint compounded, and I may have to do the face of it so as not to show wood grain. You could do this at any height or size you want or even vary the heights in the same room. My 2 cents. Great work as usual.

Oh this is very cool! Ok first comments, then ideas. -what if your ever decide to use 2 monitors? -i thought you would've removed the part of the desk that screams desktop. Ideas: -have you thought about putting something on top of those file cabinets? They look sturdy enough, something tall and skinny to hold fabric like a linen cabinet? Or you can make different size slot shelves for fabric or even frames. I just keep thinking putting things on top of the file cabinets can make use of the height.

What a great desk transformation! The desk chair is a favorite piece of mine and finding it for $20 is unheard of. The little lamp attached to the desk is super cute. It must be great getting closer to finishing this room. The bay windows are something I’ve always loved. Are you going to add window treatments or leave them unadorned? I see lots of patterns and colorful art in this room. It’s going to be such a creative and inspiring room for you and Queenie . Excited to see it completed, it seems like this will be one of the most important rooms in your home. Great job, good luck moving forward.. Will you fill the walls with your own Art? And will you add some throw pillows to the vintage sofa? I can picture something like Kilim or a funky Mid century Modern fabric for those pillows.

Hi Andrew! The desk turned out amazing! The wood chair is just stuning! A dream of mine is to have a room dedicated to creative projects just like the one you're creating. And for me, the perfect piece for the space would be a massive table right in the center of the room so I could work on projects from all angles. I wonder if you intend to use your glass table for that purpose? Perhaps putting in on wheels? As for storage, I love the idea of going full open shelving and similar solutions just like an atelier. I feel that, in a creative room like this, all the different materials and work in process pieces ARE the decoration. It feels so inspiring! You showed some great inspo using the height of the walls and I totally agree. Also, it frees the floor making it better to walk around the room and to clean the mess after each project. Looking forward for more of your creative and resourceful ideas for this space! Thank you for sharing :)

While staining, you need to wipe the stain off the piece after applying it. That way you don’t have a thick layer of color on top of the grain of the wood. Just noticed you weren’t wiping it down when you stained the desk and upper shelves…maybe it wasn’t filmed though??

Beautiful and so clever! I needed to see that last shot to see why you pushed that great rug so far under the sofa....because it would have run into the animal hide rug if you hadn't. I knew there had to be a reason. If it's possible to move the table and hide rug I think you should....the room would look bigger if the new rug took up more floor space, with just the front legs on the rug. I wonder if the back of the sliding doors sections would look good stained black, it would make it look more cohesive when the doors are closed? Also as the new door is slightly off in matching the other wood why not add the metal to the front of it, or a piece of leather? Overall though a great up cycle. I love the chair, it was steal.

Great question! The plan is to drill a hole through the bottom shelf to run a cord to the back of the monitor. The power strip will be mounted under the desk. I would have plugged everything in and shown it in action… but I didn’t have a power strip with a cord long enough 😭

@@REISSUED haha got it! thanks for sharing. this is a huge pain point for me when it comes to design. like how do we make these pretty things also practical - it’s hard!

Love it! Are you going to place one of those plastic protectors under your desk chair so as not to damage the floor? Queenie is a star! What a great actress she is!
