This video is mostly just a GN update -- us talking directly with the audience to cover our goals, ambitions, and some new features we've put out there. The new mini-site is focused primarily on part failures, but also has a static set of pages about some of our policies & ethics statements -- agree or disagree, the main thing is that they're known publicly and transparent for everyone. The site keeps an updated list of catastrophic failures in PC hardware, but does not list parts that we just simply thought were bad (that doesn't count). Hey, everyone! It's been a long time since we've done basically a direct update for the audience on GN in general. We tend to just focus on making the hardware/reviews content these days (with occasional pieces just for fun), but rarely do the old-school style updates on what we're trying to do. A lot of that is because we have more ability these days to realize those goals, so we try to just pursue them -- but it's nice to go back to roots and have a more dedicated discussion of "here's what we want to do and here's what we enjoy." The mini-site was just kind of a good excuse to make this video. It's also nice to put the ethics & ad statements down somewhere permanent, because it's hard to find the old videos discussing those things since they're so buried. Ultimately, agree or disagree, our main goal is that it's all out there and transparent so you know where we stand. The mini-site was really fun to build and, although we hope it doesn't require many additions to the Catastrophic Failure List, we do greatly enjoy that style of testing and can't wait to do more! arctic cooling went above and beyond twice over in my opinion.. not only did they do what you mentioned they also pulled every cooler off the shelves that they could and sent brand new updated coolers back to them then fixed the recalled coolers and sold those for 60% off.

Anything beyond that is the failures of individuals, which can and do happen - particularly in unregulated markets or when the methods of restraint (regulations and oversight) are captured by the very companies they are intended to oversee and existing laws are left unenforced or are enforced unevenly.

Many of the things you and others call the good, the 'real' properties of capitalism are actually things that were established through bloody socialist struggle, like said market regulation. Before that there was basically robber barons running the show and working people to death, and of course with slavery as its extreme - the theft of people, among other forms of theft. So this is part of the ideological cringe: That apparently capitalism only 'works' if there is constant pushback by socialist principles to reign it in. But at the same time staunchly capitalist libertarians badmouth things like market regulation as communist evil. This is the immature clown show of the USA. One would have to study the history of the USA and maybe read some Marx to see how predictable and obvious everything is. Should you eventually decide to pursue enlightenment instead of tribalist comfort, it is helpful to first read an article "Mike Davis on the Crimes of Socialism and Capitalism" (no endorsement of Jacobin by me, though) and then the (online) book "Settlers - The Mythology of the White Proletariat", a thorough historical and sociological study written by a Japanese immigrant.

Maybe failures like the Samsung 980 firmware kerfuffle should also be listed in the failure list. If someone doesn't keep up actively but does check the list every now and then, they can see even those failures/issues that have gotten a fix without a 3 part series and 20 minute Steve rant.

Actually, that particular issue was a fair bit bigger than most seem to realize. Pretty much every SSD model Samsung made in the first half of 2021 (though not every capacity) was affected... 870 EVOs (1 TB and up), 970 EVO Plus' (larger sizes) and 980 PROs. It's as if upon receiving praise for their outstanding reliability, they promptly dropped the ball super hard...

I hope they're willing to look back a generation too. A lot of people stuck with AM4 because they were specifically worried about early adoption/bleeding edge issues, myself included. But that doesn't leave me feeling very relaxed, because I'm currently running an ASUS B550 board. Were the Zen4 chips exploding because ASUS made a boo-boo? Or were they falsfying and juicing their voltages on purpose, in order to make their boards appear more stable at "lower" voltages than the other board partners? If that happens to be the case, then it's highly likely that they did it with last gen as well. And if it's more widespread than ASUS, this could actually be one of those dirty secrets among motherboard manufacturers. Hoo boy, this could be a real shitshow.

To a degree is is also the responsibility of consumers driving a competitive highscore craze. Although, it is also just the whole capitalist system under it, because if everybody agreed to not care about overclocking, then the businesses would try to find something else to differentiate themselves with and compete against each other. Basically: Don't cheer for war and then expect no blood spilled.

Don't undersell your channel, Steve. I haven't built a new PC in more than 10 years, but I still follow this channel religiously. I'm the family technologist, who is generally expected to have answers to tech questions (and provide tech support, of course). That capability has saved me from a lot of family drama over the years, which has real value to me. That's why my keyboard currently rests on a certain blue Mouse Mat. If my wife and I ever reach escape velocity for the doom spiral our finances have been in (yay US healthcare 🙄), I have my eyes on a Mod Mat, among other things. Thanks for the awesome channel, and keep finding awesome ways to part us from our money. 👍

I built my 1st PC, P-90 several years ago. Then I went the laptop route, but grew tired of burning those up so, last fall I decided to build another desktop. Jayz and GN, were my 2 primary sources for hard data and info. In Nov, I ordered my parts, after having chosen to go the AM4 route vs the new AM5 build. 5800X3D on an NZXT N7 MB. (white build). With the recent events around the AM5 board/chip issues...I'm REALLY glad I went with the previous gen for the build. TY Steve, for what you, and your crew do. The info, is HIGHLY appreciated.

Your company’s focus and vision to mainly protect consumers, and in a way while exposing flaws protecting manufacturers from lawsuits is great for all involved. The companies showcased get a chance to show their solutions to problems while addressing them, and consumers decide where to put their money based on the practices shown by the companies showcased. You guys do bonkers tests that put to the forefront edge test cases that could actually catch an end-use case, and I applaud you for it. I have personally never experienced any of the weird failures you highlight SPECIFICALLY because I avoid those edge cases. That means so much not only to me, but probably to the general PC building community. Keep doing what you're doing, and I like the consolidation of your information. I hope it becomes easy to digest. Amazing stuff as usual. Really appreciate y'alls contributions to accountability and product quality in this space that's so often rife with rumor and tribal knowledge. I love the idea behind the new website! I would love to see it possibly grow one day into something more. My first thought when you began talking about the idea is that it would be amazing to have user profiles on the site. Users could create profiles with PC builds and attach part numbers. If there was to be an issue with any of the parts in your build, say six months, a year, two years, etc. down the line, the user would receive an email letting them know of a potential issue. Similar to how car recalls are handled. That would be a ton of work, no doubt, but the end result would be really cool imo. Anyway, hope y'all read this and keep up the amazing work!

Criticism/suggestion on the failure report list: Depending on how you want to organize the "Resolved to GN's Standards" column, would it be better to use a simple "yes" or "no"? The "eventually" seems too vague without explanation. How long? Was it in bad faith? etc. If you stick to using "eventually", I think a link to a brief explanation would be a good idea. (just for "eventually", not "yes" or "no" just to clarify) I know the links to the video reports are really helpful here, but a tl;dw would be nice for those who don't want to watch every detail beyond the implications of "eventually". Love the update and thanks for continuing the hard work!

Thank you GN. A lot of us dont live in the more wealthier countries. So a new computer is a big investment especially given pricing that is 30% up of msrp because of import duties etc. And we also dont get as much attention from Manufacturers as the advanced markets. A lot of claims from manufacturers are just that "Claims". It is really usefull and warns us off manufacturers who cant be trusted anywhere. I bough Artic fans etc basically because of your recommendations. And they are awesome!

Even if a brand is really good eight now, you still should treat is as an entity that is potentially out to screw you over. Otherwise you let your guard down, and all of a sudden 10 years have passed and the brand and products have turned to complete shit because people still defend the decade old image. I see it a lot in the car community where people will shit on the better product and defend the bad one like their life depends on it just because A was more reliable than B in the 80s.

GN is directly responsible for giving me both the interest and confidence to build my first pc. The technical focus of a channel not afraid to include walls of product performance stats while incorporating real-world user considerations was so effective that my first-ever build was done while drinking a sixxer of tall boys without error. Furthermore I bought the GN driver set on the whim that it might ease the build assembly process, which they did in a sublime fashion. After watching their content for several years now, I have an even better sense of which brands and products to invest in for future upgrade/build purchases. The fanhood sentiment is such that days were spent pining for a realistic way to move locally during their most recent staff hiring sequence.

With regards to you commenting how the written portion of the site means a lot to you, one thing I think is missing that would be *super useful* to have in writing for me personally would be a singular place on the site where I can get the most up to date comparison of GN's benchmarks for CPUs but *especially* GPUs, with bonus points for having historical comparisons too (I know your testing standards have changed over the years and so on but sometimes making a connection between massive GPU generation gaps is extremely helpful to demonstrate to people). It has *actually happened* to me IRL no less than four times by this point over the span of about a year that someone has directly asked me to compare their GPU to the current market in terms of performance. Now I keep a reasonable handle on how well the last couple of generations of GPUs have performed relative to eachother, but let me tell you that I do *not* keep a mental note of how well an RX 580 performed. I *especially* don't keep a note of how it does against say a 3070, and sure I can kind of spitball it by working backwards, but I have actively gone out of my way to look up GN resources to refresh my basis of comparison so I could get a decent idea. Each time it has been kind of awkward and I have had to google my way around different GN videos and I've personally found my self *really* wishing for a centralised place on your site where I can just look up the info in text, I even went there to look the first time.

@@rolux4853 Yeah, I recently wondered whether people are examining the strange phenomenon on GPUs, where tech downscaling is a natural development, yet graphics cards become bigger, hotter, heavier. To me this is an expression of the great power that can be attained through video gaming entertainment, in part due to how much we rely on the visual sense. It's basically like a monster (Diamond or not, hah) getting hooked on superficial spectacle to lure prey in. As for CPU prices, besides the almost always present large pricing scale between models, it has seen ups and downs from what I remember. In the far past there were times when CPUs were all kinda dirt-cheap but also phases where anything potent was very expensive.

They don't need to be budget, but as long as they have one that's reasonably priced I'm fully in support of building a rig with as much EVGA gear as it can fit. Heard nothing but great things in recent years. Never had one of their power supplies fail on me. Haven't had the pleasure of using any other parts, but after watching that deep dive GN did I'd really like to. They looked really passionate about what they do.

I'd just like to say THANK YOU. I ended up building my PC with parts that you reported have catastrophic failures. This was *just* before your report came out, unfortunately, so I'm sticking with it. (reference: Asus TUF X670E-PLUS Wifi MOBO with AMD 7800X3D). What I'm thanking you for is allowing me to be informed and prevent these catastrophic failures from happening by informing me of what settings are safe to set in the BIOS, and my new PC, which I hope will last a long time (my upgrade cycle is crazy long at 8-10 years), is running pretty.

I like Fractal, they seems genuinely care. A few years back I had a glass side panel exploded on me. While waiting on the replacement panel, I decided to make an acrylic one just for fun. So I sent an email to them asking for measurements of that peculiar panel, the next day I received the detailed engineering drawings of that case and a message which basically says ”we normally don’t do this but here you go, enjoy”. It’s rare these days to see a company this open that they sent drawings of their current product to some random dude from internet. And also good to know their customer service people works closely with engineers. If instead it was Dell, none of that will ever happen, I would get an Indian dude talking in circles.

I would not be surprised if this were true. I work in automotive product development and we experienced similar engineering headcount reductions which have resulted in substantial workload increases for those still with the company. It’s pure shitshow status in some corners of the company, including mine.

Keep in mind also that many products were designed and/or manufactured in a pandemic/post-pandemic era of work-from-home or return-to-work difficulties, labor issues, supply disruptions, and resulting parts substitutions at manufacturing and product levels. I'm actually pretty surprised we haven't seen more widespread failures, but I think that speaks to some level of resilience and (often underappreciated) hard work from a lot of dedicated people. Not to excuse bad products, of course, but the times we live in do account for some of the issues. Companies that don't have the ability to pass on increasing prices (inflation) of components that they use in a product may also be tempted to "cheap out" and cut corners.

Well, WoW became a bugfest (worse than random noname private servers), bugs are known by them, yet it is not fixed in months. There are constant downtimes, multiple times per week and not even a sorry, no gametime extension for having an unplayable game for 5-6 days/month, nothing. Now you can play DF for free for a while... but you actually need to sub. I mean what's next? Free test drive for cars but you have to buy wheels for it first? So yes, layoffs cause unfinished garbage products with shitty support and poor development. But hey, at least the big dicks of the companies can smoke crack on a yacht.

Go look at the last digital foundry episode. Spoiler, it seems to have power managment problems that seem to be bios related. Richard noted that it gets lower performance when the power cable is plugged in for some reason. It sounds like a bad joke but sadly it's not. Peace

When did they release the video that says that? In the Talking heads video, all he noted was he received different bench marks at home than in his office, and the second talking head said "I wonder if this is suffering form the Bios issue Asus is having?" and he said "it's possible".

Amazing video: hugely helpful to learn about the Ethics Statements through this kind of formalization, as well as having them all together in a nice place that can be searched for in the future. Concrete example: this demonstrates that your corrections in the 13900 case were in line with your own Corrections policy, which implicitly explains why the method of correction you ended up with was chosen (even if the top comment didn't fully do this). Visibility of these policies was indeed quite a problem, so now that they're all nicely centralized it makes for easy referencing of these policies in any corrections notes in the future as well (which will give us a nice reminder of their existence and you an excuse to tell someone to RTFM :-) ). This kind of video goes a long way in demonstrating that Gamers Nexus practices what it preaches, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who absolutely appreciates you're holding the channel to the same high moral standards as you're holding those companies that get a guest appearance in 'GN court'. :D Hats off, and it's really amazing to see updates like this one!
