Join me in my ramblings as I review the BOOK 8088 IBM PC/XT Compatible laptop from AliExpress...
An 8088 cpu based mini laptop, with only 640k ram, no UMA, 512 CF HDD, USB drive support and 3 ISA ports, a BIOS of questionable legality, tiny 7 inch screen, is the BOOK 8088.
How could I pass up such an odd ball retro PC device to check out?
I originally saw these last year but they quickly ran out of stock, so once I saw these available again, I took the chance to snap one up. It seems there is quite allot of stock now so I wouldn't fear in missing out, just make sure you get one with the sound card and ISA adapter as they seem to be optional extras now and will cost more if bought later.
Will I regret it? No serial or PS/2? No floppy controller? Small screen? Only CGA?

I bought one earlier this year and you can change the resistor underneath the bezel to increase the brightness of the screen... works well for what it is.

Yeah Ive seen this, except im planning to use a variable resistor to have adjustable brightness :)

This and Hand386 are very cool but I would only consider purchasing if they would add ports for mouse, keyboard, monitor at least.

They just made a version 2.0 that has VGA, Serial and Parallel ports, ext keyboard should be an easy hack. I recently bought one without thinking so in a few weeks we will see

I belive its basically an ADLIB clone, so MIDI music only. Im guessing an 8088 is pretty stretched to run a SB card, and I dont think there's much software that can use the combo of the 8088 plus SB card, so it kinda makes sense just having an adlib clone. I have a future New XT build planned where ill be trying a Sound blaster 2.0 card on an XT, so Ill know for sure then.

I just got one of these too. Yeah def if you make any mods let us know cause i would look to do them too. Like i cant get vga out via isa, but apparantly using a bios that supports it can. I dont know if that one guys bios supports it ot not.

Im definately adding a serial port, its the one essential i feel is missing. Depending how I go I may put some up for sale. I think running a VGA card should be totally possible, I haven't had a closer look yet but if the NuXT from monotech can do it, im sure this can!

Looks like I am not the only one with left door does not fit in. Wonder if I could make it fit by taking the board out and rearrange it.

Yeah, I would remove the board first and firmly push that chip in, mines not pushed in all the way on one side. Id have pushed mine in but I am planning on dropping an 8088 in there so no point for now:)

If this is your first look and unboxing then how did you know the cf-card was hard to remove ? I'm really surprised the designer of this retro notebook didn't add a basic serial or parallel port. Would be much more a retro 8088 system if there were at least one of those ports. Interesting video even though we didnt get to see any games or apps working! :)

The CF card was immediately obvious it was hard to remove after that first firm dig with my thumb didn't budge it. I looked at it later and one edge of the card is hard up against the chassis which was what made it harder to remove than usual. Im going to load up some games etc and see how it runs, just wanted to keep this initial vid under 30-ish minutes :)

@@MikesRigs Yeah, most of the components look very tightly packed in. Appears to be a very rushed product with not much testing before production but still a nice gadget. I look forward to the next video review!
