This week we consider the usability of the .22 Magnum for Concealed Carry or Every Day Carry. Thanks to Allen W. for his comments on our previous video on the Stopping Power of the .22 LR cartridge, which prompted some of the thinking behind this video.
Thanks for watching. New videos post every Thursday!

SW351PC 7 shot 22mag revolver carrier here. Super light loaded up. Fits in my pocket, won’t jam or fire accidentally.

I have the same gun and like it. Only thing I don’t like is the 12 pound trigger pull in double action. I can shoot it pretty fast single action and more accurately.

Wrong. Read Elleritz study of real world- all calibers do just fine. Conclusion: This study took me a long time and a lot of effort to complete. Despite the work it took, I'm glad I did it. The results I got from the study lead me to believe that there really isn't that much difference between most defensive handgun rounds and calibers. None is a death ray, but most work adequately...even the lowly .22s. I've stopped worrying about trying to find the "ultimate" bullet. There isn't one. And I've stopped feeling the need to strap on my .45 every time I leave the house out of fear that my 9mm doesn't have enough "stopping power." Folks, carry what you want. Caliber really isn't all that important.

We often carry a taurus 942 .22wmr...8 rounds, da/sa, enough weight to easily control the gun, and squeeze the trigger again the fastest, most natural reaction if a misfire...in our neck of the woods it is plenty for 99% of potential problems...one note: that 300 pounds of energy out of a rifle barrel, out of a snub nose we doing good to get 80-90 pounds of energy, the velocity just isn't possible that quick...we do like the gun...

I have a Walther WMP, 22 Mag semi-auto, and I find it to be very reliable. However,I certainly agree that a center fire cartridge is the better way to go Love shooting 22Mag, it’s just fun, like 22LR. Appreciate the videos on the various calibers.

I agree that cheap, mass produced .22LR is not very reliable. But I have yet to have a failure to fire with CCI .22WMR maxi-mag in over 1200 rounds. Same results with Hornady .22WMR 30 grain V-MAX. I believe the quality control is far better with 50 cent rim-fire than with 10 cent rim-fire ammo. A hammer fired handgun is a must for .22WMR.

I like the Walther WMP but also debating & considering the PMR 30. Currently, with the TX22 and the LCP II 22lr we use CCI mini mag and haven't had a misfire yet.

The FBI states that energy in handguns is a useless metric because most handguns can't hit hydrostatic shock levels of 2100fps. The bigger caliber creates bigger holes, that's all you're getting. Penetration in gel is their go to in HANDGUNS. Also, they make several 8 shot 22 magnum revolvers.

I don’t know what the odds are of actually needing to shoot somebody but I’m guessing they are one in several hundred thousand. That being the case, why would anyone want to drag around some heavy piece of metal on your belt. I don’t have any issues with strength or dexterity, I just like 22’s and 22 magnums. We all know that shot placement is far more important than caliber. If I’m able to load somebody’s chest with 22’s or 22 magnums because that is what I shoot at the range all day long, I think that will give the bad guy a change of heart (no pun intended). I know the ideal would be to be accurate with a higher caliber gun. I still feel very comfortable with the weight, cost and familiarity of my 22 options. Good video. Thanks for listening.

I am hooked on RU-vid gun videos. On a number of occasions I have heard people say they would not trust a 22-mag automatic pistol for self-defense. I wonder how many of these people have an accurate shooting 22 mag? My Smith and Wesson 22 mag automatic has shot approximately 850 rounds without a hiccup. I had problems with my Kel-tec PMR-30. But I sent it back to Kel-tec and they made it right. Now, I have shot approximately 400 rounds with my Kel-tec without a problem. The Kel-tec is my second most accurate piston (I have 19). My most accurate pistol is the Sig P322, a 22lr with a Holsun 407 red dot. My Sig P365 and CZ p07 are accurate enough to make it into my EDC rotation, but they are not as accurate (with me pulling the trigger) as the three pistols I have mentioned. I am 76 years old, and I don’t have trouble racking the slide on the 9mm pistols (I have five). But I do have cramps in my hands if I shoot too long. My range angle recommended Arnica pain relieving gel. It works wonders.

I had to switch to the 22LR/22 Magnum guns because I'm 79 years old and I can no longer shoot the larger caliber guns, even though I was a Glock guy and I carried a G19 as my Duty Weapon for over 15 years! I now have Nerve Damage in my hands and the 22 platform has been a great way for me to make a shooting adjustment and I Do Carry a PMR 30 in a OWB Holster and I sometime carry my P17 in a OWB Holster for self defense! I have No Problems at all and I am very confident with my EDC Guns! P.S., I do Not Work for KEL-TEC but I can honestly say that my PMR30 2nd Generation Gun has been extremely reliable and in over 1000 rounds, nothing has gotten loose or broken off! What you seen here is the Future of the Gun Industry and KEL-TEC is, IMO, the Leader in the Gun Industry because they have managed to Put Plastic & Metal together and Produce a modern quality weapon! Yes I am a Fan and I own Two P17's one CP33 and my EDC, the PMR30! Great Video!

With the blast and muzzle flash a .22 magnum pistol could easily pass for a 9 mm or even a 357 magnum when fired. Unless they’d noticed the small bore a person would not know what gun they were hit with.
@PerceptionVsReality333
@PerceptionVsReality333 Год назад
It sounds more like a 357 magnum. I've tried a Beretta92FS & Glock19 without hearing protection & they weren't that loud but my cousin's 2" 22 WMR revolver was way louder pretty much the same as my Ruger GP100 6" revolver.

.22 magnum only makes about 130-150 ft./lbs of energy out of a pistol length barrel. Only a rifle can get 300+ ft/lbs of energy out of that cartridge.

Due to neck problems I’ve got a lot of weakness in my hands and my thumbs don’t work well. It’s getting hard for me to rack my 9mm. I figured I might have to go back to a revolver. I’m on Social Security and can’t afford much. I was looking at an RIA m206 or m200 but it’s hard to find them lately. I’ve also thought about a .22mag. I’ve had duds in both rimfire and centerfire.

I shot and killed a coyote a little over 100 yards away. Right behind the ear. While not a handgun catridge originally, 22 mag and to a lesser extent 22 lr; 22 is a great little powerhouse. I carry a 38spl revolver for edc, but I would not turn down a Beretta 21a or a S&W 342(I forgot the number) in 22 magnum. Excellent video and rock on!
@timt8029
@timt8029 11 месяцев назад
Excellent content as always. Your presentation is the best and new sub here. I agree that the .22 magnum is far superior for these reasons. First is bullet construction. The advantage of jacketed bullets is a plus. Next is even though its a rimfire its more reliable typically than a .22 lr because its not as susceptible to contamination from lubricants since its not a heel based design. It does have a noticeable increase in power but in my experience nowhere near 3 times as much power. .22 wmr losed a lot of velocity out of a pistol hence the big flash. Usually, a .22 magnum from a pistol is in the same power range as .22 lr from a rifle. If theres a .22 magnum that gets 300 ft lbs of energy from a pistol of normal barrel length, I'd love to have some. Id expect more around 150 ft lbs. For someone with medical issues, I'd prefer a .32 loaded with .32 s&w long wadcutter loads. Surprisingly effective and very low recoil and reliability of a centerfire. Plus you dont have to worry about hollowpoint expansion. I actually let your videos play as im driving down the road. Great stuff.
@kevinchavey8289
@kevinchavey8289 Год назад
You should have included the Walther WMP which is very reliable. You selected an unreliable Keltec and a revolver with a short barrel and a cylinder gap (the S&W 648 is an excellent .22 mag revolver, but its weight and barrel length do not make for a good CC option).
@litsci4690
@litsci4690 Год назад
Well, 300 ft. lbs. isn't nothing, but TWICE that would be my minimum for self-defense. If you can't deal with the recoil, then I guess you have to make do.

I am a big believer in silencers for guns that you may have to use at night and/or inside your house for selfdefense because without one, if waking up to trouble, you would go blind and deaf after the very first shot and that's a horrible way to start a fight. I also like lighter recoil guns like everyone does, 22 mag. is a fun round, but no way I'm trusting a Kel Tec in a life or death situation, the rimfire ammo isn't perfect but I wouldn't worry about it as much as a toy-ish gun, made for plinking.

Whatever you have get good with it. Keep it working properly. And keep it at the ready. This is why 22lr is much more deadly than 44 mags. Don’t even think about comparing it to anything else, just for the sake of comparison.
