Concrete Bag Wall 👍 DIY

Here at the Live & Flip we needed a new driveway. The asphalt company ran out of product and never covered the sides. They refuse to return our phone calls and now we’re in need of a retaining wall before the driveway collapses. Multiple estimates from hardscaping companies put us in the ballpark of $4,000-$5,000 to fix this problem.
#diy #remodel #renovation #hardscapedesign #retainingwall
Good thing that our specialty is DIY.
This build was a fraction of the price and really fun!
126 bags at 60lbs each = 7,560 pounds
At the time ‪@quikrete‬ was only $3.31 for a 60 lb bags so we destroyed those estimates by thousands of dollars. At ‪@HomeDepot‬ the same at ‪@lowes‬
Quikrete-$417.06
Rebar-$70.46 for ten, 10 foot pieces that we cut in half, 20 total 5 foot supports
Water/Rain was free!!!

Hmm, no doubt i bet that would work quite well. Its just a cost difference between bags of concrete vs retaining wall block, or cinder block. Both of which i think would have less lateral strength than this. 🤔
@GoodTroubleHome

Right on @thedriver02 the cinder blocks would have been the cheapest but I wanted a rounder look. At the time the bags of Quikrete were cheaper than the hardscape blocks that I was looking at. Plus I like being different 😜

I will hopefully be putting out a follow up video in October @anothertime2023 we could have done a couple things differently and gotten better results. There was a little cracking that we should have addressed right away instead of waiting until after winter. The ice and snow got in and opened a couple of the cracks more than I would have liked. As weird as it sounds, we did not even use the rebar when we did this years ago. I only followed the retention wall about 7 years, and we had some bags turning into the high side, like any retention wall, even though it was only 3 bags high, but I was waiting for failure, and never saw it. It seemed too easy, and looked cool. The load on the bags was from the retention of the wall, and driveway traffic.

@@GoodTroubleHome I looked at it from the car for a few years. It was between a driveway and a ditch, so, it was weird enough, handling a load including vehicle load. I think it was clay soil, which might alter something, since there is a sticky to the soil, moreso then sand. Honestly, it sorta irked me that it was performing that well, since concrete was always a big deal, except that time.

My only concern on doing it this way is you have a barrier between each bag of concrete (the bags) so the concrete won't adhere to each other and basically every bag is a "brick" not one solid piece. If im missing something let me know. I have no issue with dry pouring concrete wouldn't leave them in the bags myself.
@GoodTroubleHome
@GoodTroubleHome Год назад
Yes, this was one of my major concerns too. That’s why I put so much rebar in there. I’m thinking about pointing between each bag with mortar. Maybe that will add a little more support. This was my first try at this. I would definitely do a couple things different.

Looks clean and efficient. Food for thought, do you think if you took something like conduit pipe, capped one end and drilled holes to perpetrate it. Would hammering those in on both sides of the rebar give you the ability to be more confident that the water was able to fully penetrate into the center of the bottom bags? Or am I just over thinking the process?
@GoodTroubleHome
@GoodTroubleHome Год назад
Hey Robbie, that might work but I’m not sure it’s worth the effort or cost. I used one 4 ft piece of rebar in each row. At 25 rows, I would need 50 pieces of conduit and drilling holes in all of those might be the end of me 😂 I know the whole dry pour method seems to be a short cut and not as strong as a mix but I left one bag in my garage for the past year and it is solid as a rock. And I never put a drop of water on it. Maybe it’s magic or science but for now I will just trust the process I guess 🤷🏻‍♂️

I found this online. It explains things way better than I could @josephjoestar5444 “Many people think you need a lot of water to harden concrete but that’s not true.
