Adding blocking will not do what you want it to do. Blocking is used to keep your floor joists from twisting or leaning. You should either replace the floors with plywood or lay plywood down over the existing floor. You can then put down whatever finished flooring you want. Just trying to help. Retired 30 yr carpenter.

They do need to "sister in" so she's 16 on center, the gap is too big for the weight load. Then all new sub floot and flooring of her choice. We had to do the same in our old farm house here in Minnesota.

Miss Alone, You can do an easy fix on your old woodstove. It called stove black paste,any hardware store will have it. Use a putty knife and work it into the crack then give it a once over kinda thick. Next,fire up your stove hot,it will smoke as it cures. Ive used it before and it will save you good. Your log house is turning into a wilderness mansion. Nothing wrong with that. Peace, BigT

I am sure you have gotton yourself a CO1 detector. That could save your life. Even if you fix one crack that doesn't mean you might not have another leak develop. Even your oil heater can malfunction and cause a carbon monoxide leak. Get one of the meter detectors which shows the actual amount present even before a lethal amount causing alarm to sound. This way you can catch a problem before it gets out of control. The meter will allow you to check the total amount of build-up over a period of time as well as a immediate level. A exposure of CO 1 over a period of time can be as damaging as a large short term exposure.

Not so much in the summer but in winter I could be trapped at the cabin for 8 months. Some of the recipes I make also use up a lot of stuff. I try not to show the really complicated recipes in video. But it's your cabin do as you wish.

Keeping those logs exposed on the inside is going to cost you dearly in annual fuel costs. Raw wood only has an R value of just over R1 per inch. So if your narrowest thickness is say 5" then you only have R5 in those walls (total). 12" thick walls of solid wood is about the lowest you would want to consider leaving them exposed on the inside in your part of the state. If you were to frame in 2-3" of foam boards then cover those with horizontal 1x6" boards it would keep the same appearance but add 20 - 30 R value, which would easily pay for itself in 2-3 years of fuel savings. Thereafter you could have to process say 5 cords less firewood each year.
@AloneinRemoteAlaska
@AloneinRemoteAlaska Год назад
They are 8" D logs and would get an R value of 11.28. No matter how this gets done, I have to remove the crappy way everything was covered before and remove the spray foam and clean off the walls. Basically get rid of the 70's paneling and spray foam! After that I may consider other ways to frame the wall. I get what you are saying on the keeping the look and gaining some R value though. Obviously all the paneling was spray foamed in for a reason. And possibly hastily installed! More to come on this subject later. But using less firewood is definitely the goal! Thank you so much! 🧡🤗💚

Yep wall up under the stairs add a door to the basement. You won't lose any area. Wood cookstoves are great, especially the newer ones, they have a bigger fire box and put off a lot of heat. Maybe another floor joist between the existing ones to beef up the floor .

Since I am having the stairs redone, I can have the root cellar hatchway enclosed at the same time. I really can't wait to get that wood cook stove! I will really be able to cook then! In Early spring and fall the cook stove worked like a charm to maintain a comfortable temperature…..the wonderful warming oven above was great for raising bread dough, and keeping something hot for late to come mealtime persons…

Good review of the cabin. Don't worry about the freezers in the unheated room through the winter. I keep mine out in the unheated barn all year around and in the winter it can get down to -30 F. They have been working fine for the past 5 years. Reflectix insulation is not designed to be enclosed in a wall. I have a Scamp trailer that has two layers of that stuff and it doesn't do any good. Reflectix is designed to have one service open so that the IR energy is reflected back. See the Reflectix web page for how the stuff works. For the water pipes I put them in a box of 2 inch purple foam board and have a heat tape inside with the pipes. The heat tape is not wound around the pipes but just run in side the box. You might be able to come up with something like a copper pipe around the wood stove that would circulate warm water through the foam board box to keep the pipes from freezing. Just using logs as an out side wall with no insulation might not be good in the winter as wood only has and R-value of 1 per inch of wood. I am not sure I understand what you mean by putting blocking in the beams in the loft floors. If you can I would put another set of beams between the ones you have so that they are on 12 inch centers. For your shower drain out to the garden use a 2 1/2 PVC pipe with a 1/4 inch per foot or better slope. It should drain all winter with out problem. A hose will not work in the winter and freeze up. The PVC has worked for me for two years now. I even put a heat tape in it just in case it ever freezes up which it hasn't so it is not plugged in all winter.

The freezers in the arctic entry during winter was not my immediate concern but having them in there during the summer would be. They would have to work much harder. But I will have the arctic entry roof insulated next year and will see what the temps are like. The Reflectix is only going to be used on the root cellar ceiling. I won't have to worry about pipes freezing since I am having them capped off. I plan to keep the cabin a dry cabin.😁 The logs alone will give me a R12 which isn't the greatest but I can't use fiberglass or rockwool as that will attract mice like it did in the root cellar. I can't use foam as that will attract ants. Reflectix would at best only improve the R value 1-2 vertically. And no more spray foam!! 🤣Also the blocking is to keep the beams from "rolling" as that is a concern with the earthquakes we get. A 5/8" plywood above will do great keeping the floor from sagging. I definitely should have explained that part better! Sorry about that! 🤪And I agree with you on the 2 1/2" PVC drainage would be a much better option especially in winter. Thank you so much! 🧡💚

LOL! I always knew that if I bought a used cabin (instead of having one built from scratch) that I would be changing and altering everything. Even if half these projects had been completed by the previous owners, it could just cause more issues. Like my greenhouse that is 1-3 snow storms away from collapsing. So now I not only have to build a new one I have to deal with the collapsing one. LOL I do tire a bit thinking about how long a road I have to go yet because I am no good trying to be patient either! 🤣🤣 It will all get done though! GUARANTEED! Thank you so much Cheryl! 🧡🤗💚

Girlfriend, I dont know where to begin. Your floor joists on both floors are disasters waiting to happen. Like others have said, the joists need to be sistered before they are blocked, & then the thin flooring replaced it covered with 3/4” plywood. Definitely replace that wood stove! It’s dangerous & unhealthy. Don’t wait until winter to buy it. You need to practice heating & cooking with it while the weather is moderate. Those stairs! Yikes. But I wouldn’t go up them anyway until the floors have been stabilized. I wouldn’t do any work up there until that happens. So floors & stove. That would be my priorities before tackling a pantry or removing interior walls imho.
@AloneinRemoteAlaska
@AloneinRemoteAlaska Год назад
The floor joists wont need to be sistered unless they are damaged but I think what the commenters are saying is adding a center joist to make the 24 inch on center a 12 inch on center (which is way overkill). 24 inch on center will work fine with a 2x9 joist as long as the joists get blocked and a 5/8" plywood is added to the top. And the blocking is to keep the joists from "rolling" if there is an earthquake (and of course for load sharing). Now that is far more than I ever wanted to know about floor joists! 🤣 I agree with you on the wood stove and I have found some wood stove cement that I will be able to cover the crack with. Purchasing a new wood stove will have to wait though as the wood cook stoves are a bit pricey! YIKES! We are almost the same with the priorities as I have come up with the seal/chinking of the cabin, new wood cook stove and redo the stairs. And then the flooring. Thank you so much Deb! 🧡🤗💚

Stairs: believe me, I appreciate reusing material, and I have rehabbed quite a few old houses! Having said that, IMHO it would be far better to simply install standard stringers and standard stair treads than to makeshift it. It's not going to be that expensive. In fact, sometimes it's much LESS expensive to build something standard (because it takes less labor and you can probably buy pre-cut stringers) then to spend the time to jury-rig something from discarded materials. Standard stringers also will be more stable, especially in earthquake country. I think as you get older you will appreciate a really good staircase. Just my 2 cents.

Oh, what a treat, part 2 already! 💕Ok, when watching this video, I would discard all other plans, until your stair situation is sorted. You need to consider your safety. And most injuries happens at home, by falling. My mother was just at the hospital for the same reason. Since you live remote and alone, that is the no. 1 prority. Or continue to sleep downstairs, do not use the stairs 👍 I would put hand railing on the stairs into your basement as well. Your rustic interior design ideas will look so wonderful. Your Indoor Entry to your Root Cellar is nice. I like the pulley and wire to make opening the entrance nice. I noticed the highest pulley needs to be changed to a double pulley so the wire can be looped back and forth once for leverage. A pulley adds horse power to a lift. However, not with one or two single wheel pulleys just connected with a straight wire. For leverage or to add power the “block and tackle” has to make a worker loop in the wire. The double pulley with two wheels is the highest pulley, the wire goes through it first after being attached to the cellar door then, to a single wheel pulley that you already have in the direction of the handle not too close to the double pulley next, back to the double pulley and around the second wheel back to the handle area with a second single wheel pulley that you already have now, back towards the double pulley is where the wire is pointing last, one more single pulley to point the wire to the handle! Your block and tackle now has an extra loop in it so the pulleys act like gears! Your door should feel like 1/3rd less weight or better. I attached an Amazon link for a double pulley

The Amish make some wonderful airtight cookstoves. I think they are Pioneer maid. I have been researching wood-cook stoves that have a nice size oven and longer burn time. Some of the new ones will burn depending on species of wood from 3-5 hours. I haven’t looked at Elvira’s for years, they used to have small ovens and had a whole lot of fancy I didn’t need. My brother in law just bought a brand new one and loves it. But it’s at his cabin so it only gets used periodically. I think along with you. An advantage is that your cabin is so spacious that you can set up a lot yourself. But what is a lot in strange places. Lots of work for you. If you want to dig a well anyway, then water in the house is a small step I think? If you build everything without water now, such as the kitchen, and still want water in the house in a few years' time, you have to break everything open again. Plus you have a lot more costs. And it saves space again if you don't have to store water.

I hear you on the pipes and someday if I need water piped back into the cabin I will do that. For now, even with a well installed, it will not be plumbed into the cabin. I would use the well basically the same as I use the well I drive to now and that is to just collect water in containers. If I can hook up to the well and just run hoses to the cabin to refill, that will be perfect. Thank you so much! 🧡🤗💚

I love the new pantry idea. I’ve always tried to get a new puppy so the old dog can teach the puppy how to do things. Gunner taught Raven a few things but now we are dealing with two inexperienced dogs. Just throwing that out there. There is no right or wrong way to get a dog(s). I like the future plans. Lot of work to be done but it will be beautiful when you are all finished. The upstairs will need plywood loaded down over the existing flooring. Unfortunately that 2’ on center is a large span between those joist. Keep up the great work.

Hey Brian! I hear you on the new puppy training. Kenai is still a city dog and is learning. He chooses to stay close to me all the time! Plus he isn't very dog friendly! I am hoping that when I get the fence put up in the back that Kenai can start running around more! I do have a ridiculous amount of projects I would like to get done but we all have our dreams! And as you well know, one list gets done, there is another one just waiting for you! 😝 I will have the blocking done so the beams do not "roll" during an earthquake. But 5/8" plywood on top! I hope you and Dianna and Ron had a fantastic time! Thank you so much! 🧡🤗💚

All the projects will be filmed and shown on RU-vid guaranteed! I think I can do that on the running water! Let me get my kitchen completed or at least roughed in so my new way of washing dishes makes sense. It is all very manual so I don't think a lot of people will like it! 🤣 Heating water to do dishes or take a bath is usually fun when you are camping but not so much day to day life! I will see what I can do Joyce! Thank you so much! 🧡🤗💚

Coming along nicely..Are you planning like a B&B there or some type of lodge/wayside camp?..It seems that place is huge ..Did you get some Copper River reds put away for the year?..I miss good smoked salmon

The cabin is rather large especially for just one person but almost everyone with a small cabin wishes it was bigger right!? But no AirBnB or any sort of rental for me. I value my privacy and solitude more. I have not had a chance to fish yet and I also have to be here a full year to be able to get an instate fishing license. But I will be one year at the end of this month! I miss smoked salmon and sushi! Thank you so much!🧡🤗💚

I am so happy you found my channel! Thank you kindly! 😁 The new roof has already made a huge difference but the biggest comfort for me, is not having to worry about the roof collapsing from the snow load this winter! That caused a few sleepless nights with all the creaking and popping! And the arctic entry will be so nice! Just to be able to use that room this year is nice! I hope you enjoy the recipes! Love all your planned projects. You will love the bear fencing, it really works well when properly sized. We have our freezers in an unheated summer kitchen (back porch previously)for over 30 years with no issues. Since we are off grid it works well for us. We bought our used wood cook stove in Idaho and drove it up.❤️❤️Kenai is starting to warm up to the camera

HA! Kenai will tolerate the cameras as long as I am petting him! I have seen the bear fencing work with researchers who put them around their tents. Do you unplug the freezers in winter? You took one heck of a trip to get your wood stove! WOW! I bet it was worth it though! Thank you so much! 🧡🤗💚

@@AloneinRemoteAlaska we plug/unplug freezers daily based on outside temps. In winter if it’s subzero we open them up to let in cold air (unless too cold, the air can actually dehydrate food). Most summer days we run them -6 hrs. Winter is temp based. If freezers are full and food frozen they don’t need to be plugged in 24 hrs (my experience). Adf&g has some great video tutorials on electric fencing. Hugs to Kenai, he’s a good boy💜💜

And I sure hope my contractor watched both videos and took notes! LOL! Thank you so much Lisa! 🧡🤗💚

I am keeping the outside hatch as it is a good fire escape if needed. Also the double door hatch allows bigger items to be stored down there if needed.

I am in some women only travel/ camp groups. I see some women alone going to Alaska. I bet they would love having a place like yours to spend a few days at. Most have some skills you might be able to use for bartering a place to park. Gardening. Fencing. Canning. Running watering systems. Lots of us have solar and/or generators. And understand pack it in. Pack it out. Paying for electric &/or water.

Hi Alone - I have an idea to make more fun in your videos. You could perhaps make some text pop up with Kenais thoughts, and put it near him. A lot of dog youtubers do that to great effect. Sometimes they are simply hilarious. Take a look at Kenai from around 16:14 - a perfect situation for a funny text. 🤣 Perhaps your son would love to be "Kenais voice"
