Are there any other novels that feature trans or non-binary protagonists that you have enjoyed? Tell us in a reply to this comment so viewers can scroll through for recommendations!

I'm gonna be extremely predictable and say Virginia Woolf's 'Orlando'. A classic, I know, but I highly recommend it to anyone who might not have read it yet.

I haven't read any novels with trans or non-binary but this one some interesting so far. I'll give it a chance. The only LGBT novel I've even read is "Volle" by Kyell Gold. I honestly thought it's okay. I didn't hate it but I don't love it either. The sex scenes were alright when it comes to the details but the plot felt more like filler than the main focus of the story, in my opinion. I kinda stop reading it midway through. I might re-read it and maybe I'll have a different opinion on it.

Viscera by Gabriel Squailia has an openly trans protagonist and multiple other trans supporting characters, with a lot of major themes surrounding gender identity and societal perspectives. It's a dark fantasy of sorts taking place in a setting filled with long dead gods who's ancient corpses still alter the land the characters find themselves in. It is a very intense read with violence and such, but it's open take on trans and nonbinary identities in a fantasy setting is something I greatly appreciated.

I'm reading a fantasy series right now with a significant character who is gender non conforming. It's the realm of the elderlings but I'm only 4 books out of a dozen-ish in. I don't really know how this character feels about their gender identity because getting their thoughts is heartbreaking rare so far

Putting this one on my to-buy list, for sure, if I see it! As your future self will appreciate, I am used to "one story in the prose, another in the footnotes" since reading House Of Leaves in high school. After that, everything is going to seem so natural, haha. Fortunately, I've also grown up a bit since then and won't burst into indignant flames if I see an explicit scene. I think it's time for me and this book.

I'll definitely have to look for this book next time I visit a local bookstore, or at least see if the local library has it. Can't wait for the next video!

Long footnotes: I first encountered these in one of the Thursday Next books. There's actually a section where the main characters escape the main text and the plot *occurs* in the footnotes. Just to make things extra weird for an already weird novel series.

~3:50 Flipped some letters there, the term is Lascar, not Lacsar. Also, the term applied to Asian sailors more generally, not just to Southeast Asian ones, though in a British context they were largely South or Southeast Asian.

I'm glad you're back!! I really missed watching your commentary and reviews on books and whatnot. Your videos never fail to get me interested in reading more books (which, unfortunately, isn't something I've been doing much of lately, despite enjoying to do so). I really loved the idea of covering LGBT+ literature, it isn't something that gets much of a spotlight as it should. In either cases, I'm glad to see you and your videos back!

I'm really happy to see you reviewing a story with a trans character! Just one small correction, though, since it seems no-one's pointed it out: The phrases "trans woman", "trans female", "trans man", and "trans male" are all written as two words because 'trans' is an adjective. It seems minor, but writing them together is like saying "bluetable". Or, more aptly, it's like saying "blackman" or "acewoman". It's not just grammatically very wrong, but there's a strong sense of dehumanisation and exclusion baked into the grammar. And that othering isn't just theoretical or abstract. The one-word version of 'transwoman' is a favourite of feminism-appropriating transphobes because of the implication that trans women are too different from other women to simply be 'women', with many transphobes going so far as to say "women are women, transwomen are transwomen". I know it seems like something too small to bother pointing out or correcting in the future, but, unfortunately, the power moves transphobes use really are that subtle. Well, that, and, small difference or not, it just wouldn't be nice to call someone a gayman.
@CloudCuckooCountry

I just checked and, whoops, I wasn't aware. Thanks for pointing that out. I'll make sure to use the correct grammar in the future.

I remember when I was younger that the changing of Jack to be trans would've made me mad considering he's a real historical figure. Now that I'm older I think it's a fine artistic interpretation that does nothing but add to the novel. Here's to all the kids he were transphobic in 2015 but grew out of that shit.
@CloudCuckooCountry
@CloudCuckooCountry 4 года назад
I actually think a drastic change like that is more than acceptable for historical fiction because it's immediately obvious what artistic liberties the story is taking. I have gripes with historical fiction IF it's unclear what parts are authentic and what parts are artistic liberty because it runs the risk of misinforming the audience. (e.g. HBO's Chernobyl. Great show, but it's often unclear what's historical and what's fiction.)
@VineFynn
@VineFynn 4 года назад
It's not transphobia to have views on whether real historical figures should be significantly fictionalised in retellings (not saying that view is correct, obviously that would have you disliking most retellings of shepard's life)

Finding your channel some months ago was great, as it got me back into reading (this is the type of channel I have been looking for about books/novels for a long time and I am glad I found it). Though, having said that this was probably the first book where I was a bit disappointed in it. It was still good, but I found that it had a strong start, slowly became a tad bit of a slog and the end didn't really live up to all the promise it seemed to have at the start. Still nice, but can't help but feel a tad disappointed :/

I really don't understand this. I found this channel from the book burning series, and in it, you go into great detail about what makes those books bad, and I appreciate the level of analysis you put into them. This, however, left me confused. The snippet of the book shown didn't really seem like the masterful style you described it as, but instead seemed pretentiously stupid ("lizardy fuckwit", and "vacant anomie of an insurance tower of a second-rate city." what happened to brevity being the soul of wit?). And I wish you went into more detail about what, exactly, makes the "gratuitous sex scenes" so fundamental to understanding the hearts and minds of the characters, instead of just saying that it does and moving on. I just don't understand
@CloudCuckooCountry
@CloudCuckooCountry 4 года назад
This series is intended to be less analysis and more consumer review, and that comes with a lot of stylistic changes: I’m trying to convince the viewer to seek out and read the novel themselves. So it’s going to rely less on pulling detailed evidence from the novel (to avoid spoilers) and will be more opinion-based. The excerpt is also intended to be more of a spoiler-lite sample of what you can expect if you read the novel, rather than as supporting evidence for my claims. It’s all kinda geared towards the consumer review purpose. That being said, I recognise that there are still things I have to improve within this style. For example, I think you’re right that I could’ve chosen a better excerpt to showcase. However, this series has gotten way more feedback from viewers who told me that they purchased the novel based on my recommendation, which was ultimately my goal, so I consider the style to be successful on that front. If that’s not what you want from this channel, that’s absolutely fine, everyone has their own tastes, but it’s what I prefer to make for the foreseeable future and I hope you’ll stick around regardless. I still have a Book Burning or two left in me!
