Better question: what is the real reason strange didn't use time stone on thanos in infinity war? Edit: Yes, a time loop would have not done much. But that's not really using it ON thanos, but onto Strange or everything else except thanos. But if the time stone was used to make Thanos a baby without knowledge of anything (while he is an Eternal and technically immortal in aging, he can't have been the same when he was born a 1000 years ago, so basically a baby), he wouldn't stand a chance. The time stone could also do the effect on just Thanos, effectively disarming him, but gauntlet might also work in disarming if it tries to go back in time to the location it was in. Both situations wouldn't alter the other infinity stones if they are resistant to time change. While infinity stones do enhance tremendously the senses of the user, esspecially the reality stone in this case, because Thanos didn't have mind stone or the time stone which Strange was holding, I don't think he could have easily predicted what they would do. Although Thanos could have already easily killed the Avengers on Titan, he didn't when Strange would have started using the time stone on him/the gauntlet.

I would think the reason to be that even if they killed off the current Thanos, someone will continue his work. Perhaps Dr Strange needed Thanos to win in order to have him destroy the stones, then the avengers go back to the past to get the stones, revive everyone, then return all stones to each timeline. So maybe this was what Dr Strange saw as the ultimate solution where the snap can no longer happen in their timeline.

I know that the director and everyone in the team involved in the process of this project have tried their best to update the theories and visuals in this movie as close as possible to the modern quantum physics theories. However I dont think screenwriters understood this whole science process. They inconsistently answered some stuffs abt the timeline where Capt went to spend 70 years was the exact main timeline, which is inconsistent to Hulk and Ancient One and ofc the quantum physics the whole movies followed, that they can never go back to the past of their own timeline! The fact that the sling serves as an inter-dimensional portal means that it can open a pathway to transport matters across the space, that’s why when Obsidian tried to get back through the portal, Wong closed it, and Obsidian’s hand was cut, it was because the transportation of matters was shut down so only his hand went through in that amount of time. The portal itself is not a butter knife. Therefore, I believe that the portal can indeed “cut” through Thanos, and in order to make sense of it, I think they should have plotted in mind that Dr. Strange saw this but he simply didnt do it becuz it would be useless for whatever the things Strange saw after that. Maybe he saw Galactus would chase after the stones, so he needed Thanos to destroy them. It’s not that hard to make the plot, but the most important thing is to keep the theories you applied consistent!

Answer to the title: Because the directors didn't want to completely ruin the movie because of a single move, Infinity War wouldn't be considered one of the best films ever if Doctor Strange just killed Thanos with a sling ring.

He had the Space Stone at that point. He could get out of it, faster than Strange, or Wong could close the portal. I'm sure that counter was in one of the possible futures Strange looked into. (However, it didn't occur to him that he had a Sling Ring when he was asking Tony if he could turn the ship around, and return them to Earth.)

So in other words, plot armor. Theoretically I suppose cutting off his arm may not work since part of Doctor Strange‘s abilities’re energy-based, therefore nullified against the space stone. In comic lore the dividing line between each of the stones aren’t sharp, but a little gray. What I mean is that parts of the space stone’s abilities include matter expansion as well as the space-time continuum. So even though he can’t control Doctor Strange, he can control the space (areas between molecules too) and matter around him to counteract Strange’s attacks.

Not only will Dr. Strange return in Endgame, but his sarcasm will be on a whole different level. Also, he might be like a possible guide to the others in the Soul World.

Hulk has unlimited rage which means unlimited strength. Thanos was perhaps overall more powerful, but in a straight up physical fight, Hulk would really hurt him if he got angry enough.

The more impractical answer is that if Dr Strange could do that, there’s no reason for the Avengers in the first place.

I feel like the space stone actually explains both this portal slicing. And why Strange didn't put him into a time loop... Don't know if the space stone actually works like that though. :D ... but maybe, Thanos could have just jumped through time and space with it to escape the loop. So maybe that's why Stranges' greatest hits are not too effective here.
