Wow, Emma! This video almost made my head explode! As a native English speaker, I've never thought about the difference between "been" and "gone". Thanks for explaining it so clearly. You're amazing!
Emma, you definitely opened a new gate of knowledge on my brain. I'd never ever heard that past participle of "to go" were "gone" and "been" from any instructor. And the way you explain it,...wow!!! You're fabulous!!! I've always used "I've already/never been to a place.", but I couldn't see no sense in the usage of "been". And now everything makes sense. You've just set me free, Emma. And I'm thankful for that. Cheers
I'm pleased that I helped it to be clearer for you, Claudio! Although, to be honest, my explanation was not perfect - it's wrong to say that 'been' is a past participle form of 'to go'. I meant to say that the meaning is similar and it can be useful to THINK of 'been' as an alternative past participle of 'go' (I think it makes it simpler to understand!) but grammatically, 'gone' has only one past participle form. I'm glad to hear that the lesson helped you to understand the difference!
Emma, thanks for the information, but the way you've put it was perfect indeed. You thoutht out of the box, you went beyond. And I believe that students who used to have that uncomfortable sensation when using "I've been to somewhere else", for instance, like I myself used to have, they now have the right sense of such structure, as the rules listened in other times didn't work. Please don't touch that lesson. Don't try to repair it. It's been one of my favorite. 💓
@@mmmEnglish_Emma It is true that 'be' has only one past participle, that is 'been'. But 'They have been to the supermarket.' In this sentence 'been' is used as the past participle of 'go', not the past participle of 'be'. So you are right. Don't worry about it.
Thank you Emma for your work. It is clear, well explained and helpful. My students will certainly learn from these videos in addition to my lessons. Vive la France, Vive l’Australie!
English is my native language.I write well, but i am not good at speaking to people whom i do not know well.I must tell you that your programme is very well thought out and you are the best at presenting it. You are always coming up with words and phrases which are essential to be articulate. You are the best .Please keep it up.
@Jyothi Sithara the first is in present perfect and asks about your feeling from the start of the year, until now. It’s an unlikely question. The second is in present simple and is asking about how you feel now. The latter is more fluent and works better for real-life contexts.
I am improving my English with your RU-vid videos, to be honest, I have grew up your lessons. However, the ads interumpt the normal course of e-leaning. So I thank you for your time and English teaching expertise.
Hi Emma I am Daniel from Ethiopia and I really thank you for your English lessons and I have learned a lot from your English lessons and I appreciate you because you are intelligent, kind, and interesting lady!!
Hi, ı’m from turkey🇹🇷 and ı love you lessons. in our English class, we've seen “been” and ancak gone ancak but I don't think I understand much. That's why when I first came home to watch your video. I love you so much♥️
I have been using "been" correctly but I couldn't distinguish why" been" not. " gone".Your lesson on this topic helped me a lot and now my concept about "been" and "gone " is clear. 👌👌👌Emma Thanks this Awesome lesson.
Hi Emma, myself- Mamta, from India, your lessons r really very effective and help me a lot to learn more. After watching you, I feel there is still a lot more to explore about English basics. I appreciate your efforts wholeheartedly. Thanks a lot dear.
You are one of the best language teachers I’ve been ⬅️ever seen 1-Best Body Language. 2-The facial expressions are more than wonderful. 3-You have a fuzzy face with best smile in the universe. Finally Many thanks to my honored teacher 🤩😃
thank you emma, it has "been" quite simple to grasp. by the way, try to add ("End Screen" video) at the end of this video because you're referring to nothing. good job, keep doing it....
Dear Emma, I usually love your explanations, and as an EFL teacher, often share them with my students. However, it is just WRONG to say that the past participle of "go" can be "been". It can NOT. It is a different verb which, when used this way, has the same MEANING as "gone". But it is NOT the past participle of "GO".
Sorry to disappoint you, Adele. I've just reviewed the section you are talking about and you're absolutely right - I meant to explain that the meaning is similar and it can be useful to THINK of 'been' as an alternative past participle of 'go' (this has been the missing link for my students in the past and has helped reduce confusion around usage and meaning) Grammatically, 'go' has only one past participle form and I failed to make that clear. Thanks for raising this issue :)
@@mmmEnglish_Emma Don't worry. You are right, I think. '𝐁𝐞𝐞𝐧 (to)' indicates the verb '𝐠𝐨', (NOT 'be') though 'been' is the past participle of 'be'. I have 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 to London. Here 'been' is used as the past participle of 'go'. You have explained in this way to make the students understand better. Have a nice time.
Hi Emma, once again I have to say thank you for your efforts to improve my English skills since a year. Now I can chat in English and German by writing and speaking with people almost around the world.
THANK YOUUUU!!!! Emma I need you help with this sentence: -Where is your cat today? -I don't know. He has (been/gone) outside all morning. 😭 I'm confused, I don't know if he came back or not, so I don't know if I should use "been or gone" bc he will come back for sure..... Please, HELP 😘😘😘
Jamal El Yadmani Thanks! For your answer. We were in an argu yesterday at class. The teacher and other of my classmate said BEEN, But I said GONE and the teacher told me I was wrong but I can't understand why because, the cat has not cameback....so, for me is GONE
Sandra Escofet Sorry but the correct answer is BEEN not gone. You two are wrong and your teacher was right. If you didn't add "all morning" we could say "It has gone" or "It has gone somewhere" but in this case we would say "It has been outside all morning" because we do not say "I go outside all day". It's incorrect. We do say "I've been outside all day" though. It's just correct to use to be verb. It's inappropriate to claim that past participle can be either been and gone, it cannot. All the English verbs has one (sometimes two) form in past participle and it comes from the verb. Learn - learned - learned or learn - learnt - learnt but it still comes from the basic verb. Be - was/were - been, go - went - gone. And you cannot mix them as if been and gone were the same. They're not. They just sometimes have the same meaning but the usage of the two clearly differentiates. A teacher has already said that in the comment but I just wanted to make sure you guys won't duplicate that mistake. Btw, I'm Tifanny, just using my brother's account. Cheers ;)

Thank you Teacher for this wonderful video. "1. I had been to Japan. It is a long time 2. I have been to my parental home. 3. Past moments are gone forever. 4. I have never been to Australia." I need more practice with verb 'gone'.

Oh Emma I love all your lessons. I can understand your language as better as others youtube videos. I'm a beginner and it's really important for me. Thanks
Hello Emma. I’m from Mexico, and I live in Denver, Colorado. I recently started watching your videos, and they have been very useful. One of the things that I love about you is the unique way of teaching English, you speak slowly and very clearly. For sure I’m going to keep watching your English lessons. Please excuse my writing, I’m still in the process of learning English. I would like to ask you a question, is it proper to use contractions when writing a paper?
Emma, you should hear that....in my exam there was a question :" Have you ever..... to Australia?" ( gone or been) I made "been" but it wasn't accepted my teacher told me "gone" but now I see my answer was correct....you are perfect 👌
All your classes are excellent. But this class was the best I've seen so far. Maybe it was because I didn't master the differences of these verbs until I watched your class.Thank you very much!
Thank you, Emma. Your videos are so useful for my English Grammar Course. By the way, I got straight A's by watching your videos. I'm really impressed! :)
