We finished our hallway connecting our two cabins!! We are FINALLY dried in!!
About Us:
Hi, we're Jason and Jennifer. During the summer of 2021, we left our family and friends, our jobs, sold everything, and began our Offgrid Homesteading journey in Maine. Since then, we've connected 2 Amish Cabins, installed a well and plumbing, installed our Solar System, built a power shed, an Outdoor Kitchen, expanded our lot by logging 5 acres, built a successful garden and more importantly, our marriage has grown leaps and bounds!!
We're not experts in anything, but we're getting things done and making things happen despite all the challenges. A Dream, Hard Work and Perseverance gets us through every project, every day.
So please join us by subscribing to our channel to follow along on our OFFGRID HOMESTEADING JOURNEY here in Maine.
Enjoy Being,
Jason & Jennifer 😊
We are truly grateful for your support during our journey here in Maine!

Just a word of caution, follow the six inch rule when using a air nailer or power nailer. Keep your free hand at least six inches away from where your nailing. You will eventually have a nail hit a knot or grain and turn out of the wood toward your hand. If you have ever accidentally run a nail into your hand you will never let it happen again. Don't ask me how I know!
@HanbleceyaRanch
@HanbleceyaRanch Год назад
I can only assume you’re speaking from experience…. (Ouch!!). Since this video, I’ve changed how I use my nailer to ensure that doesn’t happen. Thanks for the tip! 😊

Put some flashing on the wood siding side. And put some z flashing on the Eve side under the drip edge down over the 1×4 that would stop water from getting behind it. Cut a slot in the siding side so the flashing can slide inside it then silicone it.

@HanbleceyaRanch 2 года назад
That makes a lot more sense than just adding silicone 🤦‍♂️. Gonna look into that. Appreciate the info!

That is what I did. I sprayed foam in the areas that are open just to keep the squirrels out. But I found out that bugs still will gets through. So use the green can of expandable foam for pests mixed with a large open stainless steel mesh. (It is the one you can get in the kitchen section you use to scrub pans with.) Don't use just steel but the stainless steel or copper pads. Learned that the hard way. The gray foam form works for awhile but the squirrels pull it out.
@HanbleceyaRanch

I like the idea of SS mesh and the pest foam. Am going to dig a bit deeper into that. 😊

I found if you don't tuck the foam rubber sealing strip in away from the edge of a roof cap strip, ravens can and will peck at it and pull it out just because they can.

When you are using the nail gun keep your free hand as far away from where you are shooting the nail as possible. If the nail hits a knot it will bend and go out the side. I've had it happen to me and I've seen it happen to many people. It really hurts when it shoots into your hand lol

Maybe consider running a strip of white gutter from the high end to the low end and attach it to your building so it would overhang over the roofing on the house extension below. Also important there are foam strip pieces that you need to stick on ends of your metal roofing that overhangs an inch or so to keep the ants, bee's etc. from getting up underneath your roofing panels. The grey foam strips have the same design as your roof panels. You could call a metal roofing company and ask them if they have any to sell or where you can get it. You should take a piece of your metal roofing with you in order to get the correct pieces. It's an easy install.
@HanbleceyaRanch
@HanbleceyaRanch 2 года назад
Hi Sandra, yep we have the foam strips and are installing those at the top and bottom of the roofing. As for the gutters we do plan to utilize them near the end of the hallway roof. Thanks for the comment!!! 😊

several things to help you not have water issues... 1. bend flashing so it goes under the drip edge and over your rib on wood side. 2. with a low slope roof you can have siphoning effect, so put the ag panel seals between flashing under the edge of the steel on low side to prevent siphoning along with ag panel gasket to seal (and keep out critters). 3. On your walls, put in J channel. You can silicone the wood - J channel seam. Good luck with your learning process! Read the comments people have written and then check with someone in your area that has experience.

I would have used metal flashing instead of the piece of pine. I also noticed there were no 2x4 sections to support above the window. If you'll have the weight you were discussing up there I'd definitely add them if not to late to do so. You have one horizontal framework you need vertical structural ones to take the weight off the window and distribute it to the wall.
@HanbleceyaRanch
@HanbleceyaRanch Год назад
Hi Eric, at the time I built this I had no idea about framing the window properly. I’ve since built a few things and learned a few things… you’re right about the window and that’s something we’ll revisit in a year or so. It’s performed well for the past year. Check out our latest “one year later” video, link in the description. Thanks! 😊

On your pitch issue in the ceiling you should have put that 2 x 4 on top of the rafter instead of under you would've still gotten the pitch on the roof but your ceiling would've been flat. Looks good though for having no experience just keep that on mind for the next time.

One thing I’ve learned over the years that just about everyone doesn’t do and to me is a big difference is when u cut any wood I try to keep the saw wider part one the bigger side of the wood that’s on the horse or that’s not going to be the piece that falls off .bin doing it the other way for so long and the cuts always end up with a little wave in it or cut off the 90deg cut ,just something so simple to me made a big difference down the road especially out in the woods trying not to waist anything.

New subscriber, Chad from Adler Farms sent me over to say hi. We're eventually going to put a couple tiny homes on our property we just purchased. We have major construction going on right now on the house. I will be moving my 75 year old mother onto our country property hopefully in the next 6 months. I believe that we have decided to go with a tiny house for her. We also have two disabled adult children and a grandson with Asperger's (autism) that currently live with us but to give them independence we're most likely going to add tiny homes for them as well. So far I enjoyed watching how you put the two homes together. I will definitely keep watching as time goes by to get great ideas as to how the layout might go on these homes we're putting on our property. Love how humble you are, the fact that you say you're not a carpenter is great. As my grandmother would say "you never know if you're going to accomplish your dream if you don't give it a try!" Great content! Much Love from our family to your family 💞

New subscriber here, this was my first video I saw of your cabin and I would LOVE to have that project and be doing that! I know they make some dark colored (gray or black) foam strips that are made to sit inside the curves of the tin roof pieces, I've seen them at Lowe's. They block water and critters from coming in but allow a small amount of air to circulate I think. I plan on using them when I re-do my roof. And I agree with what Dave said below, I'd put some water sealant on that wood. If not it will get moldy and have gray spots and not look at all like the other wood around it (as well as soak up water and ruin the outside wall within a couple of years). I need to win the lottery so I can get some of those buildings and quit my job and make them into a home. Wow....wouldn't that be something! I look forward to seeing more of your video's. Stay safe!

Use a break to fashion a piece of flashing. Tuck under your drip edge and come out at 90degree. Come out an inch or so and bend down 90. Measure your facia board and then bend another 90 with a flap onto your roof.

I always dreamed of connecting 2 tiny homes like this together to make a bigger one. But alway imagined just butting them up against each other to make a shape of a T or an L, without making a connecting hallway like you did. Couldn't you have just butted them up against each other to connect them?
@HanbleceyaRanch
@HanbleceyaRanch 10 месяцев назад
We get a lot of snow in Maine and so when I designed the hallway, it was with snow in mind…it needed somewhere to go from the roof. So I figured I’d add the hallway so the snow could still slide down, then down the hallway. It works very well so long as we take it, which is t much of an issue since we rake our roofs anyways. Hope that helps!

You should get a small can of water sealer for the untreated pine that will be exposed to the elements. As for the gaps in the tin roof fill the holes with steel wool and foam to close it up tight. Great work!

The right way is to open up both roofs and build a joining roof to make them as one! If you don't know how, then hire it done! Otherwise, it's going to look like crap and rot the wood then leak.

@charlestrainor4133

What you just did, I will probably be doing eventually. The plan is to get the first cabin in place then place the second cabin as you have, in an el. At this point I'm leaning toward putting the first cabin higher than the second. It would be high enough that I could make the second cabin roof, a single pitch, leanto design, set it lower to the ground, butted right up against the first. The roof could fit right under the eaves and a short staircase inside would accommodate the difference in floor level. The heater would be in the lower of the two structures so heat would migrate into the higher cabin.
@HanbleceyaRanch
@HanbleceyaRanch Год назад
Love the concept! We considered an “L” shape but decided against it because I was afraid of the amount of snow we’d have built up between the “L”. We ultimately decided to go this route and we absolutely love it! Wishing you the best on your future build! 😊

@@HanbleceyaRanch I'll be down there (Belfast) on the 16th of October to start sizing up my plan. You're way up north I gather. Maybe if we decide to do some driving, we can swing by for a closeup. As acquainted as I am with insulation, I think I'll have at least 6" in the walls. I'm looking at a mini ice age on the horizon. Later, Jarhead.
@HanbleceyaRanch
@HanbleceyaRanch Год назад
@@charlestrainor4133 We’re up a bit north of Belfast. So here’s my 2 cents on insulation after a winter here… we used 4” Johns Manville R13 in the walls and ceiling…while running both wood stoves, our cabin was quite toasty (even at night) in -20. I’d say R13 is the minimum and anything greater than that would be improvement. That said, it was not uncommon for us to have a handful of windows open even when the temps outside were in the negative. 👍🇺🇸
