Its the 22nd December and on this trip we tackle Every Disused Station on the former Midlands and South Western Junction Railway. Set to be the countries main link for North to South Freight its story is like many other whose ambition never quite matched required cash flow!
Welcome to Episode 5 of #EveryDisusedStation. You can visit the website for progress and information about our adventure. www.paulwhitewick.co.uk
Paul and Rebecca have decided to embark upon and rather silly challenge which will hopefully see them visit all 6800 (approx. figure) disused stations in the UK. As always the criteria being that we get as close as possible without a) Trespassing and b) endangering ourselves or others. Stations do include those that are in use as heritage lines. (of course they are no longer disused but in the sense of a mainline passenger station, they are certainly on our list).
Attributes and notable links:
www.swindonsotherrailway.co.uk - A massive source of information on the M&SWJR.
somethingvloggy.uk/ - No better guide to vloggy in Wales with a significant chunk of History thrown in.

Hi. I enjoyed the video, as I do most of your videos. Regarding your rant! In my humble opinion, the real villain of the piece was not Beeching, it was Ernest Marples - the Minister of Transport. Described at the time as a "Flash Construction Tycoon". He had a vested interest in the road building program, and was involved in the large construction company Marples Ridgeway, that were employed in building motorways. When he became a junior minister, this came out, and he was required to sell his shares in the company. He sold them to his wife. Anyway, I think Beeching was just doing his bidding. But it was Beeching that has carried the can and taken the blame.

I also agree with your rant. We so often hear about officials looking at re-opening this route, that route or some other route but all we get is a few hundred thousand spent on fictitious surveys to tell us it's not required. The trouble is the stigma, the railways were appallingly run, every station (well most) had a Station Master, early shift and late shift Porters, early and late shift Ticket Clerks, normally a signal box with round the clock duty Signalers, some even Shunters and Goods Staff. With technology these days, the Rail Network could be second to none and run really efficiently. There, that's my rant over with... PS Love your films...

I have just come across this amazing video. MY recollections of the line date from just before closure seeing a train just going into the cutting towards Chiseldon Station from Marlborough, which I also walked up from Chiseldon station after the tracks had gone. Also spent time at Swindon station after closure, even had a ride on a tank engine footplate (nice locoman) the length of platform 2 when it was hauling a few coal trucks. I also walked from Swindon town to Rushey Platt after tracks had gone but when the bridge over the GWR was still there. Also walked along the tracks at Marlbrough just before rusted tracks removed..very desolate. Perhaps most disturbing memory was going on holiday to Bournemouth and seeing the line there between Chiseldon and Marlborough and when we came back a few weeks later it had gone..just rust marks on the ballast and all the signals vanished...hence my interest in disused railways ever since. Seeing how vegetation (and man) has taken over is fascinating.

Keep up the good work...

The track is not from the disused railway as such, it will be part of the re-building of the line north from Hayes Knoll towards Cricklade where a new station is planned I think a little south of the original station. To the South of Blunsden the line has also been re-opened , again that will run on a new alignment as funds and volunteers permit into one of the Swindon country parks.

You say you arrive at your local station. In Launceston, we can travel a mile down the line 1 mile on a narrow gauge railway during tourist season. We cannot get anywhere because we are totally disconnected from the rail network. Probably the nearest station is Gunnislake or Bodmin Parkway. The former we can get to Plymouth the latter the only way it would be of benefit would be to go down Cornwall because it would take approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hours to reach Exeter which is 50 minutes by car. Okehampton is closer but not on the main line network. We have lots of closed stations round here.
@pwhitewick

Yup, so many lost lines, and whilst we agree they were not all built with the public in mind, there is much to be said for notion that a developed society isn't one where the poor find it cheaper to buy a car than travel by train.

Paul, just visited your website as I was interested to see what you're planning on doing next. Saw that you were planning on doing the sleeper train to Fort William. Though I've not done this route myself (on my bucket list!) I recommend you watch Paul Lucas on his 'Wingin it Paul Lucas' channel on here. He does the route the other way round, but it's very informative - not just on route history but also on what to expect on the train itself. Oh, and he says do this route in summer, otherwise it'll be dark for the whole route (if done in Autumn/Winter). It's VERY detailed, but still pretty good and tells anyone planning this route everything they need to know about it.

The Midland & South Western, like the Somerset & Dorset, was built to connect the Midland Railway with the London & South Western as a through route from the Midlands to the South. It should never have been included in the Great Western, its biggest rival, at the grouping. Once included, its fate was sealed.

Good rant, valid point. We have the Great Central track bed within half a mile of us. Twenty years ago it would have been simplicity itself to reinstate the line, which at one point there was a proposal put forward, so to do. It didn't happen and the NIMBYs crawled out of the woodwork to protest. A lot of people hereabouts live in Leicester and had the track been reinstated and had it been approved for passenger traffic, it would have reduced a mind boggling twenty mile/one hour drive to minutes and insodoing, reduced road and motorway traffic, reduced noise, reduced atmospheric pollution etc. I'm now convinced we are a country of halfwits, who are governed by those of even lower IQs.

Interestingly, looking at the maps, Foss Cross was quite a sizeable station, especially compared to Chedworth. There was a decent-sized engine shed at the south end and the line was double-tracked for half the way to Chedworth, which was, very much, just a halt although, it was staffed until 1954. You seem to have plenty literature on the route but, just wondering if you've seen this page, featuring the work of one of my favourite railway photographers, Hugh Casserley: www.swindonsotherrailway.co.uk/rmc.html Some decent shots of both stations. Cheers for now, Dougie. Edit: As you mention the website later in the video, I guess you have, of course, seen it. Duuh !!😬
