“You’ll catch more air than Michael Jordan.”
Connor Herson closed the dog-eared Indian Creek guidebook he was reading from and gazed across the campfire with a grin. It was his first trip to Indian Creek-the mecca of single-pitch splitter cracks. At a mere 19 years of age, Connor had already amassed a lifetime ticklist of hard trad climbs, from a free ascent of the Nose (VI 5.14), an all-gear ascent of Empath (5.14d), to a recent summer sending spree of everything hard in Squamish (Cobra Crack, Crack of Destiny, the list goes on).
Yet Connor, the California crack aficionado, had never visited the windgate fissures of Canyonlands. Until this past spring. Now, sitting around a campfire under the desert stars, perusing the guidebook and soaking up the history, lore, and beta for future days spent plugging cams on endless sandstone splitters, Connor was finally feeling what you can only feel on a chilly evening in the Creek.
And with that epic route description read aloud-complete with visions of Jordan-esque whippers should you blow it at the crux-Connor was easily enticed to rack up and go for the send on Air Swedin (5.13 R), one of Indian Creek’s finest outings.

The kid (now a young man!) is a beast. I remember hearing how he was going to school M-F and trying to free the Nose on weekends as a 15 year old. Incredible.

Anyone know the reason to not clip the chains as pro instead of use 2 cams? Just curious for my own knowledge.
@devinrogers4885
@devinrogers4885 10 месяцев назад
it really comes down to style and ethics! Mad respect to Connor for that choice. Skipping the chains is a way to "pretend" the climb is not an extension, but rather a climb unto itself. Clipping the chains while climbing the extension would be sorta like setting a new trad route with a random bolt on the face right next to an easily protectable crack. Obviously it's not the same thing and in this case it's a highly personal choice. No one would judge anyone for clipping the chains, which just speaks to Connor's ethical and stylistic convictions. He just wanted to do the thing in the best style possible.

I'm confused. There was gear but one piece was mankey. That isn't considered runout then right?

Why not clip the chains with a quick draw and add 24 kn of safety?

I'm pretty sure that when Tommy Caldwell climbed it, he clipped the anchor as a piece of gear. Different strokes, cool both ways. I think that the gear there is pretty good so it doesn't really matter much.
@bprLogos
@bprLogos 10 месяцев назад
I must be seeing this wrong. It looked like he clipped into biners already in place on chains/bolts (the bolted anchor). What benefit would it be to add a quick draw into the system?
@bprLogos
@bprLogos 10 месяцев назад
What does it mean to clip the anchor as a piece of gear? It looks like he just clipped the anchor. The alternative would be to lower off of gear you place and leave behind.@@jnick5358
