How can anyone say Jim Crow or Civil Rights era was long ago. People are still alive that experienced all of that. The Black Family has never recovered from slavery let alone JimCrow. You can’t ask Black Americans to have personal responsibility ,then let the government off the hook for repairing the harm. It’s literally a contradiction. This whole notion black Americans are waiting on someone is ridiculous. Remove the structural barriers first. Asking someone to pull up their bootstrap when you took their boots is nasty work.

Exactly as a Brit I hear you before the Conservative party and regulation and Brexit all rivers were one of the best in the world but now they’re so full of crap that even rovers and any kind of watersport it’s dangerous to fall in the water because of E. coli and other infections. Ana has been quite effusive in her praise of Hughes so I fully expect him to be on the show soon. Actually since I haven’t been watching TYT regularly in the past few months, I kinda assumed he’d already been on and I just missed it. I think Coleman is okay, btw. Disagree with him on a bunch of things but he has some decent takes too. And if nothing else, he seems to always engage in good faith. (Well… mostly, now that he is employed by a right wing think tank, sometimes he sounds like he is just parroting the company lines)

This is a news flash. We don't all think 100% alike. There are a lot of us who agree with the conservatives on at least a few topics. They probably just would never vote for someone like Trump or the MAGAs, or even some the "old school" Conservatives. There are plenty of black folks who consider themselves Independent. They often vote for Dems, but there are at least a few social or fiscal issues they agree with Republicans on. Most of us aren't even saying that structural issues are impossible to overcome. We're just saying don't ignore that they are a factor. I kind of find it funny that Anna is talking about political boxes, when she puts almost everyone who does not identify as a Progressive in one basket. I wouldn't call myself a fan of Loury, but he is proof that we have a variety of opinions, and we actually think about who we vote for. He is much more conservative than he is letting on in this interview, but there are a lot more moderate black voters in the country as Progressive thinks. Anna can't blame Obama. A lot of people questioned voting for someone who had risen up in politics so fast. I ultimately voted for Obama in the General, but I never bought into the whole Hope and Change thing. Some of us questioned someone so new being able to deal with the BS the Republicans had been doing for the past 20+ years. People can't have buyer's remorse now.

on a recent podcast, I've heard the professor state how much he hated affirmative action over and over again as though he was at a trance But only to hear he benefit ed from it? I didn't know he was from Chicago. I got a grossed from listening to him and his ideology along with Professor, John Mcwhorters Professor Emeritus Thomas Sowell Colman Huges And other black educated conservatives I would recommend he take a trip to the west side of Chicago or the Southside he can plainly see What's the rest of the sea? The everyday people are living under siege Of gunfire Violence street gangs from block to block And nothing's been done about it at least in the last 60 years since this riots of the 1960s

I think it's great Ana has Glenn on. I've listened to his podcast to try and understand what conservatives believe. He and John did an admirable job when they realised they had been misled by awful makers of recent George Floyd 'documentary'. He does believe a lot of the lies the right wing spins about transgender issues sadly, and uses some typical 'anti-woke' language, but good on Ana for bringing him on.

A person can be an interesting amiable person and still have sh*tty ideas especially on things like economic theory! I didn't understand that statement. It's as if signing the Civil rights act somehow forced the racist institutions and systems to be dismantled overnight. We still see the effects of it today. They were still bussing school children well into the 1990s trying to integrate schools. We still see racism in banking, housing, hiring practices, and more. He, himself may be removed from it, so it is easier for him to ignore.

Loved the interview, Ana. Racism is a real thing which has manifested itself in MANY ways throughout history, is doing so today and is determining our future. I feel the need to address this on each and every level including what it has caused, is causing and most definitely will cause, as well as individually, politically and as a society. I don't think it helpful to tell someone who on hand of their color is being put at a great disadvantage to attain the necessary capital to pay admissions to schools, for example, to "get on with it". People in general DO try to get on with it - - what choice do we have?

…jeeze. What is happening at TYT? Is this related to finances, bc this is a headscratcher. It’s fine to talk to ppl like Lowry, Sowell (although he’s old) and so on, if you’re pitching the network as open to having discussions with ppl of diverse viewpoints-some of whom are diametrically opposed to the left. But to have that discussion be a friendly-I dare say puffy-interview with a person like Lowry is frankly baffling. For Ana, I’ve noticed that she likes to entertain personalities who are black, conservative in name (e.g., Lowry) or frame (Hughes), and who have some dedication to intellectualism instead of merely rank grift (e.g., Owen’s, Elder). Maybe it’s a coincidence, but each of those ppl play down the effect of race on our society. Time will tell if the driving force behind the pattern becomes clear, but it is very odd that someone like Lowry should be given this spot on TYT before an interview with someone like David Harvey. TYT is framed as a progressive network. Understandably there’s some diversity in style and opinion. I’m not even opposed to having someone like BG on talking about Gaza even when I think the positions he’s taken are absurd on the facts that have been reasonably available to us for sometime. Whatever. But this interview marks something different than mere diversity in opinion. When you speak glowingly about someone’s work who has been opposed to the bulk of progressive reforms…in fact has been a true believer in the neoliberal thought sphere for decades (I believe Lowry studied at UChicago when M. Friedman was there…he might have studied under him) it is just antithetical to the underlying project you purport to be engaged with at TYT. This is even moreso when Lowry has an online presence that can lead unwitting audience members astray (understandably so given the warmth of the interview and how algorithms work). I’m baffled.

This was very and reasonably said. At this point, Ana and Cenk don't know where they stand. Lowry represents everything they purport to be against universal healthcare, environmental regulations, affordable housing, and getting money out of politics. Remember Wolfpack? Ana is searching for her political place after she felt rejected by the left. She's not that far away from Bill Maher. Also, the attraction she has to Black intellectuals who have a history of attacking black people and progressive ideas is interesting.

The Professor is correct. Das Kapital is exceptional sociology. Too bad he never learned about or understood the Mutual Aid/Cooperation conceptualization of economics. Read Kropotkin, Proudhon, Godwin, and Goldman. Competition does bring out effort, efficiency, and innovation. But cooperation creates the opportunity for the fulfillment of a higher quality of life. Mutual Aid is the best of humanity.

It was a weak, mean high-school-girl move instead of journalism… He used drugs and cheated on his wife, just like Bill Clinton. Whoop-de-doo! She could have asked 3-4 policy questions, and he would have hung himself with his own hypocrisy. If he was wise, he would have declined the interview. Meh.

Great interview and it makes me want to read the book and follow the author. I love the way the interviewer approached the interview. In today’s climate authors are treated with such hostility that they can’t express the art of writing in its entirety. The strategy of scrutinizing and prosecuting writers for things in their book is killing the art of writing. Ricardo Authenticity Rating for this podcast is 10 out of 10. It flowed and left me wanting more. It created interest in the book and the podcast and it also elevated TYT in the process. Great job on all fronts. And the host is beautiful inside and outside. Young Turks need her presence. She is priceless.

I tried to read Das Kapital at age of 15 when I was a student in the UK. The interesting thung was that it was hidden with Lady Chaterly's Lover, James Joyce's Ulysses and other legal "pornifraphy". Anyway, eventually I insisted and convinced the librarian to lend me the book. I gave up since I did not understand much. The Communist Manifesto was a much easier read.
