I grew several varieties of shell beans this year for the first time. Yeah, I know. Dry beans are cheap to buy. . . . as long as the stores have them in stock anyway. But maybe they won't be so cheap down the road. Who knows. At any rate, as I intend to introduce shell beans into my family's diet and make them more of a staple in our house, I wanted to make sure I can grow dry beans. This is in keeping with my on-going goal of whittling down the items I have to buy from the store. So, here's the results of my first attempt at producing home-grown, organic, shell beans. Oh, and If you're interested in the heirloom variety whose name I repeatedly screw up in the video, here are some sources for Indian Woman Yellow beans (which, incidentally, have a relatively short growing season of around 65 days -- great for us northern growers!):
