I have 5 good sized dogs. They get half kibble. And half road kill deer stew. My oldest dog no longer gets ear infections since starting him on stew. Our newest member had very runny itchy eyes. It slowly has cleared up and hardly runs anymore. Plus they love it 😍
I looked up Farmer's Dog's website ONCE a year ago and ever since then I have been bombarded with the same 3 commercials on RU-vid on every single commercial break. They could have the best product in the world but RU-vid and their advertising has poisoned me towards them for life. I cannot emphasize how annoying it is to be mowing the lawn, or in the shower and hear the same commercial for the millionth time and not be able to skip it. Even the first 5 seconds gets me angry at this point.
Thanks for the review Bryce. I have been thinking about trying Farmers Dog. I am slowly transitioning from Open Farm kibble to a 50/50 mix of Open Farm Raw Mix and gently cooked. Thanks for all you do. I have learned so much from you.
Farmers Dog customer service was amazing. We had a box getting ready to ship and sadly one of our dogs passed away. We were heartbroken and called to cancel the box and they couldn’t have been nicer. Immediately cancelled the box and refunded the money. We also received a beautiful live houseplant and note delivered in condolence. Our other dog still eats farmers dog and loves it.
I used to feed this, and we have currently changed a lot diet wise. He gets a combination of different food from open farm, spot & tango, raw, freeze-dried. Definitely helps he's a tiny dude so 4lbs of kibble last 3-4 months.
What brand do you use for freeze dried? I used to feed Farmer’s, then switched to Ollie, all while feeding half Sundays also. Now I’m switching to homemade but I’m thinking about doing half freeze/air dried so I can still use food to train, but Sundays is so darn expensive
@thebkpets it was OK, didn't enjoy how messy it was, he like it but he didn't go through it fast enough. We since made the switch to higher quality kibble and raw and I've learned techniques to store food
Thank you for this video. I joined a homemade dog food group on Facebook and asked if anyone would recommend an animal nutritionist on RU-vid or elsewhere and "The BK Pets" was mentioned. I am constantly doing research about how to improve my dogs homemade dog food. I think I can make my dogs food cheaper and as I am recently retired I couldn't really afford the Farmer's Dog, but I really appreciated your review of it. Along with the homemade dog food I also give them a vitamin chew, but recently switched to Native Pet vitamin powder. I also add sardines for omega's and make a mix of ground beef and turkey, seaweed calcium powder, taurine, wheatgrass, pumpkin, blueberries, eggs, broccoli, spinach, carrots, and recently I started adding a little bit of oatmeal because money is getting tighter on only a Social Security income. I also started making my own cat pate to feed the two stray kittens. My neighbor feeds them dry food, but I feed them wet and now homemade wet food in the morning and evening.
Hi. Can anyone tell me what the owner of BK Pets feeds his dogs? I want to copy but not if it’s all home cooked since I unfortunately don’t have time for that. Our dogs are currently on FD but it’s $300 every 18 days and they are still hungry :(
We currently feed a few different brands of cooked and raw food but I believe they are all more expensive than TFD. Don't feel bad if you want to switch to kibble with fresh food toppers! Your dogs will still get so many benefits. You're amazing :)
Awww thanks! You too! So I’ve been researching all day and found two id love your opinion on. One is BJs Raw Pet Food (about same cost as TFD. The other is Farm-2-Bowl which is actually less expensive than TFD. Thoughts?
Only 2 points in but I'm curious to see how this goes. I work in a dog kennel where people board their pets for vacation, a few people have brought this in and it looks good, even smells good. But it's so messy and I never looked it up but I'm guessing WAY overpriced, Guess I'll keep watching and find out. :) Well now that i finished, my answer is no. What we do is buy walmart dog food, think its pure balance? Then whenever we buy meat its usually in bulk. We will take the mest and cut it up and freeze it, but while im cutting it, ill cut any fatty pieces off or weird looking pieces, always generous to make sure theres meat too, but we take all those trims and my girlfriend will cook them and we have broth we add and then we portion that out and put it on top of his kibble. He absolutely loves it. Utilizing our potential trash to make my dogs diet significatly better? Win win.
The things that The Farmer’s Dog has as their ingredients I buy at my grocery store and add that to a kibble type dog food. The cost is significantly lower for the same ingredients. And, I know that the food doesn’t come from china. I would not be comfortable having a dog food company (for profit business) tell me what’s good for my dog. I’d rather my vet tell me what’s good for her. If I don’t have a lot of time on my hands, I wouldn’t have a dog. The dog would suffer and that’s not fair to them.
GREAT video Bryce! This is the kind of information people are really wanting. I hope you do more of these with different brands of foods. I've looked at Farmer's Dog before but my dog has allergies/sensitivities. I wish they had novel protein options like rabbit, goat, bison, venison, lamb etc.
Are there any dog foods that get a 5/5? I’m not currently able to make homemade dog food, and it is so stressful trying to figure out what’s good and not good. To anyone still considering the farmer’s dog: it’s a little over $200/month for my 23 lb Mini Aussie. Their pricing is really hidden until you get past the initial discounts and finally get charged for a full month. Just FYI - not a comment on whether it’s worth it or whether you should feed this.
This is so interesting and so helpful! I've really wanted to switch my dog off of kibble forever but I still have no idea what to change to that will fit my budget. Please make a review video for as many fresh/raw/freeze dried brands as possible!
@@thebkpets yep! I like that it’s similar to what Darwin’s or Viva does, vacuum sealed. And the Puptainer they give you to use with a scoop is super cute and convenient. Ollie is also available in Petco, in the freezers and has a baked dry food, similar to Carna4. If you’re curious to take a look, I created a channel on Instagram featuring my bowls. Your content inspired me to start it.
I hate it when companies choose the amount of food your dog is supposed to need. Maybe I want to feed them 2% of their body weight versus a 2.5% that way they can have extra treats throughout the day as well but they don't even tell you the price per pound let alone the recommended actual amount to feed. Like how much did this package actually cost per pound and how many pounds did you get?
I would not feed it unless my dog developed an intolerance to raw foods. I currently feed Dr. Harvey’s base mixes with proteins and oils I source. I am about to start adding PMR DIY meals to the mix, with the goal of feeding 1 Dr. Harvey’s meal and 1 PMR meal per day. I am using a RU-vidr pet nutritionist who specializes in balanced PMR meals to build these recipes, and will eventually incorporate other philosophies. With the internet, I have so much exposure to differing raw feeding methods, and I have come to believe that an everything in moderation approach is best for me and my pets. I do love watching your videos because I get access to product information other RU-vidrs seem to overlook. Let’s be honest, I don’t follow Dr. Judy and Mariah Pierson exclusively. I watch Kimberly Gauthier and Scott Marshal, and a bunch of others, including you.
I love this approach! Moderation is key and it makes sense why you wouldn’t feed TFD. Many people ask us if one food is good or not and truthfully, it all depends. If someone like you is considering TFD, it probably doesn’t make sense because you would be downgrading in quality, vs someone coming from kibble who would be making a huge jump in quality to TFD.
Thank you! I started with Farmers Dog a couple of months ago and my little terrier likes it. I moved to delivery to add more variety to Fresh Pet from the grocery store. I also tried Pet's Table but it was high in soy protein and she didn't like it after the second meal.
Hey Bryce, big fan of the channel. I feed my girls Open farm + ancient grains and they do really well on this food. I've always been interested in Farmers dog, but it's not in my budget at the moment but possibly in the future. I've been told recently that I'm feeding a bad food and that I should be feeding Hill's or Purina and it has me worried. If you have any advice or input on this topic I'd appreciate it very much, I know you get a lot of comments!
Hi there! Thanks so much for your kind words. Want to start by saying you are not alone in this and many conventional vet professionals will tell you that Hill's and Purina are the best. For us, the simplest thing it comes down to is, what do we want our dogs to be eating? My wife and I take our own health very seriously so we eat grass-fed beef, high quality grains, etc. Now, we aren't advocating for a large amount of grains but what we're saying is that the high-quality ingredients that Open Farm uses like grass-fed beef seem much better than the lower quality ingredients companies like Hills and Purina use like conventional meat, low-quality grains, corn, etc. Open Farm is balanced just like the others and they are far more transparent about their sourcing, so the choice is clear for us. Hope this helps! :)
The problem with the top, cooked, frozen, fresh dog foods (Farmer's Dog, Ollie's, Just Food For Dogs) is that they contain a lot of filler carb. For example, the recipes that contain rice are at least half rice. That means the dog owner is paying a heck of a lot for frozen rice. Anyway, the good news about Just Food For Dogs sells their vitamin/mineral pre-mix with the recipe card. So, this means the owner can make the exact recipe at home at a much lower price point and no shipping. I'm pretty sure that the JFFD vitamin/mineral pre-mix is calcium and phosphorus plus only a few more things with the bulk of the nutrition coming from added liver and heart-- The less the "synthetic" additions the more ingredients the owner has to accrue to make the recipe. To keep the balance, though, the owner can't randomly cut down on the rice or other carb ingredients. I would recommend watching the yt channel, The Dog Nutritionist for very simple recipes (cooked and raw) to make for your dog to feed in rotation with other recipes or as a wonderful addition to a kibble diet.
now this is the type of video i’ve been waiting for from the bk pets’ youtube channel. i remember from an instagram live they were doing, they mentioned how they were working on in-depth dog food reviews and this first video did not disappoint. super well-made on all fronts! can’t wait to see more videos in the future since this channel has a lot of potential to grow even more
Can you please do Moochie & Brit Wet Food? Though I'm feeding my dog mainly Orijen. I'm using these as one of the toppers and variety. These (Farmer's Dog) kind are really hard to come by (or not available at all) at my area. I'm beginning to cook meat though as one of the mixers of dry food. Egg also.
Currently feeding raised right and Green Juju. I believe both of them have cat options, though green juju may only have dog food but it’s also balanced for cats
I have had my 60lb boxer on The Farmers Dog for over a year now. It is costing me $11.20 per day which to me is a little pricey. I was using their recipes they give you (which they have quite a few) if you choose to make your own and use their suppliment packs. I was able to save a little but the suppliment packs were about $20 a week so $80 a month. So with the ingredients I bought plus the suppliment packs plus the time it took to make 8 days worth of food I decided to go back to the premade portions. If I were to go back to making it myself I would maybe try to find a less expensive way to suppliment. I had to go back to kibble for a few weeks and wow the gas started immediately and he would empty his water bowl daily. When he is on TFD he doesn’t need to drink much water at all. Overall we are pretty happy. We will be going in for bloodwork soon to see how everything is looking.
@@thebkpets This may be a dumb question but why is it bad to thaw the food in hot water? How long did it take you to thaw out the food in the fridge? Seems like it takes forever.
I feed 2 pounds a day total to my two dogs and one cat. The most I spend is six dollars per day for all of them put together. You can feed a very good raw diet or even freeze diet for that amount of money. If you don’t wanna do Raw look up the simple food project brand. It is freeze dried. Good quality and the most affordable freeze dried I found.
My miniature wiener dog was forced to switch to this food after her back surgery because doctor said she needed to lose weight. She has had problems with allergies before but once again seemed to be allergic to another healthy food option. My suspicion is that she was not allergic to all three but only the beef one. This caused a strange crusty type rash all over her chest. Otherwise my Chihuahua loved it 10/10.
Didn’t talk about actual ingredients. Looks like it has too many carbs for me. And too expensive. I purchase an excellent brand from a butcher shop and I make a batch monthly. For the price of the FD, I can make treats and give raw bones too. Plus I have more than one dog. I’ve considered this brand and love what they have done for the health of dogs. Good option
Also I have to say this, and I mean this as a compliment, you look so much like James McAvoy the British actor, that you can pretty much say whatever you want
I looked into Smalls (maybe the same company?) and did the math. If I bought their food exclusively for my cats I'd be paying about four times what I spend on my own food monthly. This might be okay if you have one pet and a better than average income, but it becomes impractical very quickly with multiple animals.
Totally agree. So many of these fresh food companies work for people with like, one small dog or one small cat but we hear from people with 3-4 big dogs that most fresh food would cost $1k/month or more
My fur baby is an American bully with high amounts of allergies and needs probiotics something for his anal gland and something I can afford monthly. I am currently quitting the kibble because it’s causing my dog all kinds of problems and I’m stressed out because I can’t find an affordable healthy food for my baby who has brought so much joy for me and my daughter.😢
I have one and I buy open farm, great digestive and beautiful coat. Clean teeth. Just took her to the vet a few days ago and they said she looks great and isn't very healthy. BTW I mix kibble with their gently cooked
I have feed my dogs Farmer’s dog my dogs got sick of it after about a month. They like Ollie’s the best pork flavor. I have tried them all except Raised Right, A pup above and evermore. These 3 are too high for my budget. They now eat Sunday’s
@@thebkpets all life stage food is not appropriate. Puppies vs large breed puppies vs adult dogs vs seniors all need different nutrients depending on growth/life stages. For example, a large breed puppies need carefully crafted calcium and phosphorus levels in foods to not grow too fast, growing too fast can cause severe bone and joint issues. And I could keep going on.
What a scam scam scam…. We fed our dog just regular Alpo. She had tons of energy and lived to be 17 when she passed. Her last year is the only time that she didn’t have a ton of energy. She was a Pit Bull-Shepherd mix. I do not buy into this real food craze that has erupted. Alpo is real food as are many other brands of dog food. It s not the same quality of foods that humans eat, but it is food.
No, I was at a light. Didn’t see the driver until he turned, lit up as soon as he turned to. Had a cross guard vest on. I could see the Farmers Dog bags stacked on his back seat. Van was full
Raw was fed for 30,000 years before kibble became the new fad diet for the last 100 years. Also, raw wasn’t even mentioned in this video. The farmer’s dog is gently cooked. Weird comment.
Try the simple food project. It is a freeze dried brand, very good product and the most affordable I have found for freeze dried. They have a website. They have good customer service. Look into it.

It’s interesting that you saw it would cost over $200/month for a 23 lb dog and that’s what we saw it would cost for a 50-lb dog. Also, there are for sure foods that get much closer to a 5/5, more coming on those later!
