Discussing consoles I no longer collect for the way I used to, explained! Follow me on Twitch for daily retro and modern game streams: / petedorr Ring my notification bell too on YT while you're at it. Thanks.
I agree. Pete is so good at talking, that is really all his videos need to be. Just him, talking about his feelings about games. That is where he is at his strongest, in my opinion.
30-50 games that you will actually play each console generation is a healthy way to collect (especially if you wait for the $20 price point), and it can lead to a pretty cool collection of top-shelf games over time.
It never makes sense that most collectors exceed 50 or more games ; and then he or she never actually plays all say 70 or 100 games . Collect games that contain high-replay value, quality-titles, and games that are worth the money. And yes 30-50 games is a healthy library than say 440 games.
I want to collect EVERY NES game out there. That was my goal before I got married, now I own all of them digitally. Lol Rather have physical copies but at this point it's nearly impossible for me.
Collecting retro games, period, died out for me years ago. But most recently I gave up my quest for a complete US Dreamcast library. I have all the games that I actually love playing. There's absolutely no reason for me to have the ones I'm never going to enjoy.
Glad to see more people are starting to turn on Limited Run Games. They've oversaturated the hell out of the niche physical game market and love exploiting people's fear of missing out. They're at least handling the Switch better than the Vita, but I tapped out awhile ago. The last straw for me was when they were charging obscene amounts for Star Wars repro carts of $5 games packed with a bunch of collectors junk.
I felt so burned on the quality of those Star Wars repro cart CEs they made. They were the cheapest quality and very shoddy quality control. I think the quality of their CEs has tanked over the last year from my personal experience with them.
i just use my modded psvita to play whatever i want and don’t really care about physical copies. im technically collecting but generally only buy what i want to play. i bought a ton of games from jjgames and lukiegames but usually bought disc only just so i could play it
I made a video a while back about why I sold my entire collection. I was also an impulsive collector like you, and it got to the point where I hadn’t played over 50% of the games on my shelves. It was gut wrenching, but it was nice to start over with games I actually play and enjoy.
Ah man this was so relatable to me to watch, especially the part where you were talking about Vita collecting those limited releases really killed it for me too. Been missing streams lately because I have been busy with irl stuff so seeing new RU-vid video's is a nice treat.
Man it's so rare to see petedorr videos anymore but I love it none the less, please keep uploading pete, still one of my favorite youtubers of all time!
So happy to see more activity from your RU-vid channel again! I was really hooked when you used to upload very frequently a few years ago. Always found your videos about collecting very interesting. Good luck with your RU-vid and Twitch channel this year as well :)
Let's not compare Atlus Games to shit companies like LRG and Super Rare Games (yes, there is a company like that). Atlus is a small company that actually translates quirky, weird games you would normally *NEVER* see in NA. However, because these games are weird Atlus knows they won't sell like hotcakes compared to the Uncharted, CoDs, and Mass Effects. Hence why production for Atlus games is so low, it isn't to create rarity. if anything, LRG is a huge offender of that putting out random numbers of a game just to market it as "rare". Plus, the artwork and time Atlus puts into their games makes owning them worth it.
My collection is now, finally narrowed down to just the GBA, DS, 3DS and Switch. I've been collecting for over 20 years now, so the backlog for a lot of my older systems was just getting to be overwhelming. I had to cut it down to the systems that I tend to play the most, and that's mostly Nintendo handhelds, nowadays. I just cut the rest of the collection down to a few nostalgic favorites, and I'll keep the systems so I can still toss in some of the classics👍
I found that over time, collecting games made me value each game less and less. I kept buying games and playing them for a few hours, only to drop them for whatever else catches my eye. I've started limiting my purchases as of late and setting rules. For instance, if I get a game, I need to either make a goal out of completing it, or get to a point where I have a good reason not to finish the game.
I’m going through the same collecting growing pains. Limited companies although have great releases I no longer try and get each one. Just keep it to games I play
I'm just glad that the really expensive games are getting reproductions so I can at least add some sort of physical cart to my collection for games I love
I'm still collecting for 360, ps3 and Wii. And It would probably take me a lifetime to complete all of the gems I've collected. Haha Just too many games too little time I guess :(
I believe Pete needs to return to RU-vid, even if it is just once a month. Pete's streams are interesting, but his RU-vid commentary is excellent and this channel strangely evokes nostalgia for the early days of video game nostalgia.
I agree with the Saturn stuff. It’s even gotten so bad that Japanese import rpgs are even getting expensive. They used to be the most dirt cheap because you needed to know Japanese to play them but now people who aren’t even able to play the game they just bought will pay like $40.
I started collecting also thanks to your exciting videos about your Amazing collection. I have a pretty nice PS1/PS2/PS3 collection, but now I quit because of the lack of space in my room and time to play them. I reaally feel bad thinking of buying a new games that I know I'm gonna play It 2 or 3 years later, or even "never"... As I grow up I feel I have other priorities in terms of investing my Money so I'm done with collecting. But It was fun, and I also have to thank you for that, so.. thank you Pete! I Hope you Will post videos more often in 2020 🙂
So happy to see you back on RU-vid. Love your twitch streaming especially the eBay shopping. I have slowed down collecting for the sega master system, I am however thinking about starting to collect for the Atari Jaguar
All retro games shot up and became significantly more rare to find complete in Australia. I’m only picking up things that are reasonably priced and reasonable condition not actively seeking to complete anything just happy to have games that I loved. Good to see your back !!
I find it really quite heartening that so many people are thinking for themselves and yet are on the same page about this ongoing issue. I really hope that these Limited Runs don't represent the future of physical collecting. It really does feel like the hobby has been hijacked by these opportunistic companies determined to exploit the collector's mindset. The fun has been taken out of it. The collector no longer really requires any specific knowledge, it is now merely a question of buying what these limited companies tell you to buy and when they tell you to buy it. It's a horrible practice and business model of artificial rarity, as opposed to the more natural occurring rarity which would occur gradually over a period of time. And not a legitimate collecting model that I recognise. What is worse is that some of these companies actually feel that they are the heroes, doing us all a great favour, out of the kindness of their hearts, releasing dozens of e-shop type games physically per month, which are mostly often poor psuedo ironic 'retro' games. And then there are those comapnies who have the nerve to claim to be archivists of games by giving games physicality. Except of course they frequently re-release games that already exist physically and have done for years, Psychonauts etc, or they will even just produce 'repro's' of games, Star Wars etc. That is not 'preservation', it's just a cynical and hypocritical form of cashing in, exploiting and ultimately betraying the hobby and the collectors.
stopped collecting back when the ps4 just came out..felt like I already achieved my goal of collecting on the 360/ps3/wii/psp/etc. now I no longer have my collection( since I realize its just collecting dust and feel bad that all those games will never going to be played again) nowadays I just rent/buy(cheaply on PC) them that interest me and move on. I honestly am soo done with the toxic collection aspect of people upping the price...another reason why I lost interest in collecting is because Nintendo's Super Smash Wii U release with the Wii u GameCube port connection being sold out for its only purpose to be resale for higher margin is what got me out of it
Have you considered doing a podcast? I'd enjoy just hearing your thoughts on recent games you've played, gaming news, ect. You have a good relaxing voice for it too! Great video btw
I’m glad I always focused on the vita, ever since launch I always kept up on it.. Played the hell out of it and still do! I feel you tho, it’s tough to keep up with the staggering amount of games coming out.
I’ve given up on collecting CIB for anything where the original came in a cardboard box. Which makes me sad, but I missed the opportunity. At least loose carts can still be played!!
I actually decided to start a life-long dream of mine and start an SNES collection. I'm using the Retro Bit Super Retro Trio Plus for that purpose, and I got my first eight games, including the awesome Quintett trilogy of Soul Blazer, Illusion of Time and Terranigma. I can't wait to play through those for the first time with actual cartridges.
Stopped collecting about every home console system. I completely sold off my Famicom/NES stuff, SNES, SMS, Saturn etc. I kept the games I loved and that I had the most nostalgia for on my Playstation systems and Dreamcast. Prices were getting out of hand (especially Saturn) and I also fell back in love with Sony and Nintendo's portables. Vita is the only system I guess I'd consider myself a "collector" for. Those physical limited print games, and import Asia/Europe region English releases really did start to kill the fun. So stressful and overwhelming after a point. Some say it was a necessary evil, but now there seems to be new releases every week for the home consoles. Thankfully there are only about 6 physical print ESRB rated Vita carts that are set to come out. I can't wait to get back to completely casual collecting. Still I've got to say for the indie games that came out for the Vita I enjoyed most of them and found very little I'd classify as shovelware. Despite all the stress I'm glad I stuck with Vita.
Awesome call on the "let's create rare games" mentality. Finding games in the clearance bin that seemed good and actually were, was part of the hunt. Incredible games with incredible bad timing led to some awesome finds. I like some of the limited reissues of games but its gotten silly, and it's just not the same thing.
Honestly I completely stopped collecting video games back in 2015 and since then have been playing almost all of my games on PC with emulators.. But I still like to watch you and other video game collector guys! :) still very entertaining and fun to listen to, even If I just play all my games on PC now.
For me it's always been about collecting games that I love, enjoy, have nostalgia for, or interest me. Anything else isn't worth having for me. No point in owning a game I won't play
CELESTE was my physical to digital revelation. I waited so long for Celeste to come out as a physical release that I desisted after waiting almost one year and bought the digital at a discount. Months later the physical release was announced at around 6 to 7 times more expensive than the digital. On the other hand, Axiom Verge has a charity donation for the developer's children from buying the physical release. That time it even felt better to spend more on the physical release. I buy physical whenever is cheaper than the digital version
I have the same issue. For some reason I need the box and manual. I frown on my games that are not complete. Especially rpg’s. I need the game, manual, and box or I’m not even turning it on. Games like the final fantasy or dragon warrior(quest) I enjoy having the official guide. Not because I need it for help but more as part of the lore and atmosphere of the game. So glad your making more RU-vid videos again. Thanks Pete.
I was one of those people saying see you next year haha. I'm very glad to be proven wrong. Cheers, Pete. It's great to see you making videos again even if this ends up being the last one for a while.
Good for you. You have an extensive gaming knowledge, I would just love to hear gaming reviews, recommendations etc on RU-vid Sorry twitch just isn’t for me.
The legend of RU-vid is back and making videos once again. Pete, you've been sorely missed. Welcome back my friend. Happy New Year by the way. Having said that, the video game collector's market is a difficult one to get into, in particular when it comes to collecting rare and expensive titles. Limited edition versions don't exactly help matters. A lot of retro consoles are difficult to collect for due to how pricey the games are. The Sega Saturn, Panasonic 3DO, Neo Geo AES, N64, SNES, GBA are just a few examples. Gamecube, Atari Jaguar, TurboGrafx-16, NES and certain PS2 releases are quite pricey. Even certain PS3 games are hard to find as well. Of course, another major issue is in regards to limited edition releases, which have around 1,000 copies, which I believe is the minimum print run. It could possibly be 500 copies. There are certain people who will take advantage of the situation by purchasing 3-5 copies. By that point, the games are hard to find. They'll keep one or two copies for themselves and then they'll sell the remaining copies for 2-3 times as much as what they originally sold for. Gaming is a fun and enjoyable hobby. Its something that a lot of people grew up with then they were kids. Nostalgia is a big part of the hobby and understandably so. Unfortunately, the nostalgia and fun of playing video games and the hobby of collecting them is being ruined due to the aforementioned scalpers. Then again, there are a lot of video games out there that are legitimately rare and hard to find. Either way, its difficult to get onboard. Otherwise, thanks once again Pete for the great video. Welcome back. Its good to see you again!
I've stopped collecting for PS3 'recently' but thats mostly because I have all the games I care about/ every JRPG. I'm in the same boat with you on starting to buy more digital games and also not caring as much for limited releases / editions. I'm slowly trying to get every PS2 JRPG as well, and I swear I only have a few left but then I find more exist, or I consider including western RPGs and strategy games that are borderline and there ends up being a ton more. If I ever finish PS2 though hopefully I can slow down buying games and only get limited/collectors editions of games I reaally actually want and not just buying it because of FOMO .
Glad you back. Will we see another tomorrow🤔🤣😜 Im with you. I only buy games that I will play. I don't believe these collector edition are worth it anymore.
I finally gave up on Saturn and sold like 65 games for a good price. I miss the days of good games for 30 bucks. But now I have the Fenrir ODE so at least I still play on hardware.
Very relatable video. I was just getting started on Saturn when prices began going bananas. Really discouraged me. Even turbografx seemed more reasonable so now I’m back on genesis and tg16 which I love more anyways.
The only system that I collect for is the Vita, and even with it I’ve been ignoring the limited run games because not all of them are worth the high price for me. I’m going for a mostly complete NA set.
Hey PeteDorr, first time watcher and I couldn't agree more with your assessment. I have collected for retro systems (NES, Genesis, SNES, Saturn, PS1, N64, PS2, XBOX, and Gamecube) since 2014, and my current games in my "wish-list" for all systems is 90% or more for the aforementioned systems. I didnt even get XBOX One this time around and will likely only get either PS5 or XBOX Series X and only a handful of carefully selected games for these newer systems each year. Rock on and happy gaming!
My 2 cents with Wii U. I can get tropical freeze for 20 bucks on it vs. Full price on switch. All the switch ports charge full price unless they go on sale.
i only "collect" games i actually like and want to play. i dont collect just to hit numbers. on rarity its like all these old games get remastered and re released anyways. theres always going to be legit rare limited printed games but thats becoming less and less now a day like you mentioned.
Ive got about 20 or so systems I collect for. I’d say the Saturn and 3DO are the hardest to find. The problem I have is when I do find something of interest I just can’t remember if I already have it. I just need to make a list of the games I do have on my iPhone. Today at a thrift store I bought original Gameboy Tetris, TMNT, Paperboy, Mario baseball for $2 each in cases.
Hmm, the limited games scene has only gotten worse, I went out of my way to get that broken PS4 port of Psychonauts and that's it, everything about it brings in such toxic reselling communities. I tried to get The Messenger on PS4 through 2 different companies and no dice. The absolute worst though was Special Reserve games with their "2nd Chance Sale" for PS4 and Switch Messenger copies with a pretty email they sent out with an image/graphic hyping up the 2nd chance with pics of the PS4 and Switch physical copies. I have the image saved. The 2nd chance day comes, and Special Reserve says on their Discord that all PS4 copies will now be only sold at conventions. Horrible customer care, they have none. I was like that's bullshit, I literally waited 4 months for nothing while the ebay price kept going up. I was immediately banned.
I’ve surprisingly built up quite the PS4 collection. It happened without me even being aware of it. I don’t but into the whole limited run stuff though. I focus on ps1 titles that I wish I could have bought back then as well.
I think a good way to approach the problem is to only collect what you want to play, and to avoid backlogging, only buy a new game each time you complete one.
I just bought Dicing Knight. off eBay a few days ago complete for $700. Did I overpay? I just saw three copies go for over 80000 yen on YJA, when the game was only going for $300-400 a few years ago. Is it really that rare now? I only see it a couple times a year.
