@@SoundsAmerican By the way, I don’t see diphthong “ur” in words like poor, tour from your videos. Or American English just simply replaced them by “or” r-cored sound? Thanks!
@SoundsAmerican
@SoundsAmerican 3 года назад
Yes, you're right. The /ʊr/ sound is used in the US, but we don't believe it's used in the General American English. For example, we pronounce the words "sure" and "poor" as /ʃɝ/ and /pɔr/, but you may hear some people saying them with the /ʊr/ sound.

Thanks a million! I love all of your videos which are truly helpful. The dark L is most difficult for Asians. I've heard some teachers say it should slightly touch the up jaw, even touch the teeth. Yet in this video, it indicated that the tongue should be backward. I'm a bit of confusion, and it might due to my misunderstanding... I'll figure out with it and keep practicing it. Many people find the dark 'L' sound difficult to master, because it's very different from the regular /l/ sound which is familiar. The good news is that if you practice the dark 'L' regularly, you'll be able to pronounce it correctly. Just make sure to listen to how it's pronounced and repeat after the speaker. These two steps are critical. Hope it helps!

The British dark L is a vocalised L. That means the L has become a vowel. The dark L is in 3 forms: 1. "a schwa followed by a dark L", as in "vowel", "mail"; 2. a /u/, as in "bull"; or 3. a /o/, as in "doll". (For 2 & 3, the vocalised dark L is turned into a vowel similar to the preceding vowel, usually pronounced without lip rounding.) For the dark L, the tongue tip doesn't touch the alveolar ridge. If it does, it is not a dark L but a light L. For the light L, the tongue tip touches the alveolar ridge.

Just a note, on this channel, we don't teach British English. This is only about the General American English. 👋

To pronounce Dark " l " sound it’s recommended not to touch the tip of tongue to alveolar ridge. But I have to keep it little bit touching. Otherwise I can't produce dark " l "sound.
@SoundsAmerican
@SoundsAmerican 3 года назад
That requires a lot of practice. Don't worry though if you can't pronounce the dark 'L' correctly, this sound is usually not critical for your accent. The light 'L' works just as well, you'll be understood.

Interesting. I'm a native American English speaker from the PNW, and the tip of my tongue is ALWAYS up and touching the top of my mouth. However for "dark" L's the back of my tongue is also up. I cannot say "full" without at least tapping the tip of my tongue up. If I keep my tongue tip down, it feels like I'm swallowing it or have a British accent.

Hey, guys! First of all I want to say that your channel is absolutely ah-mazing! Just what the doctor ordered. it's been a while since your last video, maybe you need some ideas for making new ones? Could you please make a video about differences in pronunciation of these words: hustle-hassle, reword-reward, wander-wonder, stuff-staff, very-vary, bold-bald, taxes-taxis, son-sun, warrior-worrier. To my ears they sound very similiar.

Here's a video suggestion for you: 'How is the final '-s' in third person singular verbs pronounced in the simple present, like in the word 'works' - American English Pronunciation. I absolutely haven't seen anyone talking about this :/

One of the ways to make "R" sound is quite similar to one of those dark Ls. How can you clearly distinguish between them, plz? Thanks!

I love how the t and d are not pronounced at all at the end of words. "can" and "can't" sound exactly the same (1:13). And "build" has a silent d. We don't have that problem in Br.E. lol

They are pronounced, they are just not aspirated. In American English, the final stop consonants are pronounced without a puff off air. We talk about this in detail here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yFPbLcUCraQ.html
