SUMMARY:
- The crew is done with the concrete forms and is now preparing for the slab. They need to establish the height and level of the slab.
- They are checking the top of the existing forms to get an average height, and consider using a power planer to flatten out a high spot.
- They mark a line on the wall to indicate the top of the slab, and then mark a line 4 inches below that for the top of the gravel base.
- The crew brings in gravel and uses a skid steer and wheelbarrows to spread it out evenly.
- They discuss the purposes of the gravel layer - providing a flat base, allowing water drainage, and creating a void space for radon mitigation.
- They identify some areas where they will need to dig out the gravel to accommodate load-bearing points for the structure.
- The crew repairs a void in one of the concrete columns using a high-strength concrete mix.
- They use string lines to help the plumber locate where to run drainage pipes under the slab.
- The crew then focuses on bracing the formwork for the slab pour.

Hi guys ❤ my daughter and fiancée are prepping their hiuse ready to sell. It used to be his house and as always he's not done anything to it for years. Their back "decking area", I've used quotes because its a death trap. When they asked me what i would do first, get rid of the wobbly deck. They dint have much money to spend so I sent them your video series of when you updated your deck Erik. But the scary part is after i explained how to do it they've roped me in to be the "project manager". I've recently had a stroke so its great to know I'm still of use. Thanks to perkins builder brothers channel and all yoyr great tutorials 👍 👌 👏 🪚🪛📐

@jmazoso

@@MrJoeSomebodyI work in the construction testing and inspection field (engineer). Their process and workmanship says they pay attention to the details. Home builders don’t pull out the power plain to level their forms. 1/4 inch across the slab is super level. I’ve seen enough concrete go down to know that they aren’t placing wet concrete which will be weak, they had a long enough vibrator to reach all the way down the forms. They cleaned their holes when they used epoxy. They do the little things, I wouldn’t be worried about the big things.

You are a few years ahead of me with your retirement home. I hope to move from Florida to WNC in a few years and build a contemporary house similar to yours. I plan on being my own builder and will probably construct it with ICF because it is DIY friendly. In case you don't know, ICF is like giant Styrofoam Lego blocks that you assemble into walls and then fill with concrete. On this house, PBBs would have been done with the concrete walls weeks earlier had they went ICF. Can you imagine that crew playing with giant Lego blocks!🤣 ✌️

I couldn't help but notice that in the embedded NorthOne commercial, Erik was standing in front of the concrete wall, but now it has peel-n-stick waterproofing and exterior foamboard insulation. Hmmm. It seems like if they had just used ICF, the exterior AND interior insulation would already be in place and that peel-n-stick could be on the outside of the foam creating a termite barrier. I wonder how they are going to prevent termites from tunneling through that foam. I hope the homeowner with be able to get a warrantied termite treatment. Maybe on the next build, but I think they'll just use this build as a reason to go back to laying blocks.

@mikefox2182
@mikefox2182 Месяц назад
There are several spots against the concrete walls that you need to install expansion joint material against one of the upright walls for the slab concrete to expand/contract within. Failure to provide an expansion area leaves the slab trapped between uprights and WILL RESULT IN THE SLAB SPALLING against the upright concrete. This "Trapped expansion energy" will result in slab cracks and spalls. I usually use standard 1/2" celotex expansion joint material, however, I sometimes use 2X4 redwood. NOTE: No expansion joint, no long-lasting slab.

There were two ways to come up with level concrete at the top of forms. The first way was with a board or strip of board that was ripped off of a one by. Set your blade on 45 degrees on table saw. Rip the edge off board. The off cut will look like a triangle. It will be as long as the board you’re ripping. It would be easier to do with two table saws. The second saw set 90 degrees and the fence at three quarter inch. After cutting first strip go to second saw and cut off the bevel and you will have two champer strips. This works with wooden forms. Nail the champer strip on grade with flat side up. Use hand float to smooth concrete to grade. What we’re doing we champer on both sides of the forms. When took forms off we did not have a corner that was 90 it was a 45. On your forms I have just put the champer on the inside away from the sill. The second way again on wood forms, is chalk line your grade and drive a nail through the forms on grade about every 2-3 foot and that gets you a grade line. It was my experience that if you use a chalk line alone it was lost almost immediately to getting washed or covered by concrete. With you putting plywood on top of metal forms you could have done that. Either one.

Saw a mention of an air conditioned trailer in previous comment. You should do it. You guys are going to be on site for a day or two. A trailer would be a great place to centralize blueprints and warehouse bits and pieces that come with a custom build like this. Say hello to Arlo. I qualified for my carpenter's ticket in 1976.

I suspected for a long time that in today's day and age (lasers and such), less than an inch should easily be possible for a residential building. Congratulations on your 1/4"! 😄 Goes to show what's possible if some capable people put some effort into it 😉

Hey, a bit of a weird question, what is the name of the font that y’all use on the plans? I really like it, its legible from a far and letters are easily distinguishable (good for my dyslexia😅)

saun is a completely Estonian word. I was in the sauna an hour ago. I love watching your videos from the other side of the ocean, a small country called Estonia.

I once worked for an architecture firm that had such a thing for nice round dimensions that they would change the dimension precision to force it to round. Got them in trouble repeatedly, but they never learned as long as I was there. The worst is when they rounded angular dimensions and the steel detailer caught it the day concrete was being poured.

Looks like Jaimie needs an air conditioned construction trailer that houses the blueprint display tables that you see on big projects maybe?

Pro tip to keep your chalk line on the wall or on a slab use clear spray paint or hairspray 👍

Was traveling through Nantahala Area on Rt. 74 and Bryson City and thinking of all the good work and videos made by all. Love the videos. Keep emailing rolling.

Well done Johnno 👏👏 you took the initiative a few weeks back to measure and set heights, well that worked out great, not much of a difference in overall height, so well done 👍

On yah, Johno, that was darn swish work you did on the leveling out of the entire slab, to only end up with being a quarter inch out over it all...Tips Fedora. Loved the way that the entire Perkins Crew did the add for NorthOne, smooth talking guys, you need to do more advertising this way. Cheers for another fine reel Eric...

Gotta tell you I could watch more videos of you guys doing forms or anything monotonous because the crew makes it entertaining. Most entertaining building content on the tube.
