As a note, mailing your Member of Parliament in Canada IS free. It's your right to have free and open communication with your MP, so when you go to mail a letter to them, the post office must deliver it without charge.

I interned for a US Senator at one of their local offices for a few months after college (too many years ago). My advice? Keep the phone call brief. We had a 1 inch by 2 inch box to summarize the phone call. So long, rambling calls wouldn't get the summaries they deserved. Also, don't expect to get into a discussion/debate with the person you're talking to - we were explicitly told not to engage with the person on the phone. I was reprimanded for telling a caller that there were 9 Supreme Court Justices, not 11.

The neat thing about pushing us to make better appeals is that we inherently have to spend more time thinking about our own position. This leads to two possible outcomes (in my mind). 1) You have a clearer idea of what is really taking place and you make your appeal more rational and, perhaps, realistic (to whatever degree). Or 2) You have a clearer idea of what is really taking place and you change your position because you've now thought about the problem from another perspective. In either case, your effect on the world is improved because it's grounded in both reality and a wider array of perspectives. So all the while, we're watching this looking for how we can get our representatives to do what we want better, and we come away with a slightly broader view of the world (whether we realize it or not).

I can't just ignore how harmful it is to say that this is the *only* way to make things better. It is not. Representatives, more often than not, will not hold most of your viewpoints. There might be several viewpoints for which no rep would ever side with you, especially in a country where lobbying is legal. It is important to remind people that there are alternatives, like direct action in manifestations, instead to lying about representatives being the only way.

Individuals can't do anything close to that unless there is collective pressure (and then it starts to look very different). Dilluting it to include individual action is harmful in the face of the historical reality of how every single one of our rights was pushed into the mainstream before even being considered to pass as law.

I send lots of letters to my representatives, always backed up with links and with specific questions. Sometimes for support when they're facing propaganda scrutiny and sometimes to voice concern over policy positions that I disagree with. On more than one occasion, there was course correction. Might not have been because of me, but if I was one of thousand voices sharing a concern, that sparks a politician to action. A thousand potential votes? No one is letting that slide. I also try to have my major know me. He (because lets be honest, patriarchy) has to know who I am, what my concerns are and, very important, that I support him as major.

It all depends on the importance of the issue to you. If you think that you could sit down and write a letter about it, only to throw it in the trash, and that wouldn't be a detrimental waste of time (nothing to cry over, i guess) then that's your worst case scenario. As a resident of the State of Texas, I say that this information will do precisely nothing for me. My city is gerrymandered so that, of the six members of the city council, all are republican in spite of 35% of the electorate being Democrat. My congressional district was held by the man who screamed out "YOU LIE" at Obama during a speech and "BABY KILLER" to a democrat during an address in congress until he stepped down and was replaced by his hand-picked replacement with a vote of over 80% My state representative's seat is gerrymandered such that the republican always wins by a margin of 40% or more and my governor's office is held by the man who believes trans people do not exist and even if they did then they should be arrested for it. All of this combines to place me in the least representative location in the nation. I say that because, theatrics aside, these are people who could literally say or do anything, but the republican party has such a hold on power that the (R) behind their name on the ballot guarantees their job security. They do not need, nor even want, to hear what I or anyone else has to say. Even other conservatives are ignored because these politicians know they have aligned the system perfectly to prevent any significant risk to their power. Thanks for trying anyway, Dan.
@EchoLeader11

I'm also a resident of Texas. While a lot of the problems you listed are true, it's not quite a black-and-white scenario. Gerrymandering guarantees an advantage, but it's not as though the power of the voter is nil. What I mean to say is that we just have an uphill climb, so to speak.
@gnetkuji
@gnetkuji 7 лет назад
If you think it's just a matter of being an "uphill climb" then you almost certainly do not live in my district or city. The Republicans in my area were so powerful that in the 2003 redistricting my area was used to obliterate an old Dixiecrat out of Abilene who'd been in power since the flippin' 70s. Name is Stenholm if you want to look him up. Since then the democratic party in this area is dead. Like, completely dead. They often don't run candidates for most city or county positions, and other than Stenholm, no democrat has had more than 30% of the vote in any state or federal election here. Stenholm had 41% because he still had his old constituents in Abilene voting for him. They've since switched to voting Republican since he was basically one of them anyway, he'd just been leftover from back when the Dems were still the racist party of the South. "Uphill" is an absurd understatement for us. We'd have more luck getting the Chinese government to listen to any of us than the Republican party out here.

If its too late to find a more moderate challenger in the general election because of anti-democrat sentiments, look for a more moderate Republican, or maybe Libertarian, they did quite well in the primaries in my state, and try to get them elected. Realize that if there are only 30% democrats in the voting populating that they may have to abandon the party locally and ally with more moderate republicans to start moving the officials to the left. 30% isn't enough to win a general election but if you dump that vote into the republican primary you will be surprised at what you can do. Also there are many subjects you will still be able to influence them on, so don't think that there is nothing you can do, there are many things that these people vote for that aren't on the party platform and as long as you don't start you letter, with "hello I'm a Democrat and I would never vote for you in 100 years," They wont know if your a Republican who they have to keep pleasing to avoid a challenge in the primary or someone they can ignore. Also realize that the Republican party just elected the least Republican president since at least WW2, their president wants Democrat style programs implemented in many areas, so many of them will be incredibly confused as to the direction of the party, which leaves the open to influence, especially in area that the party is now divided over.

Okay, so what I'm about to write is defenitely not an attack on you, the channel, this video or anything like that. Actually, I'm quite happy to find the channel active once again, or, more correctly, to realize I had unsubscribed from the channel because of a 2 month lack of videos. So, yeah, great to be back watching your videos .Also, I did finish watching the video and read the comments you made - which, by the way, is always great to see how you interact with us viewers when you can - before writing this; I'm not that much of asshole. That said, I couldn't help but, already from the start of the video, to find myself pondering how much of a "estadounidense" message this is all sounded and having my cinic funnybone tickled. To make it clearer, by "estadounidense" message I don't necessarily mean this is pertinent only to the US system and those that are similar to it, but how this stance seems permeated by this defence of the burgeois democracy, even if due to the lack of a better viable option. Of course this is not something limited to, or even necessarily origining from, the US, but is usually associated with it from where I'm from (conceding, though, more amongst those with certain political positionings). Some have already expressed here in the comments section criticisms regarding gerrymandering and minorities, and in a way, at least indirectly, towards the representativity of the system; I can certainly sympathize with that sentiment, even if perhaps not fully agreeing with how it was expressed. As someone born and raised in Latin America, and inevitably at least somewhat familiarized with political instability, who has political positionings which would probably be characterized as left or far-left by most, as a whole the video, whose call to action is most certainly legitimate, sadly seems just too accepting of this legitimacy and efficiency of the burgeois republic and its proclaimeed representativity. By no means I mean to offend, nor do I intend to profoundly criticize you with any of this. Just a sincere reaction and short thoughts on the video and I'd definitely be more than happy to hear from you, if you feel the desire to answer my comment. Now back to catching up with the rest of your videos.

G. Neves I understand what you're saying, that this video seemingly is incredibly in favour of the power and legitimacy of a representative democracy, despite their being issues such as gerrymandering, mistreatment of minorities in the form of voter ID laws, and the general rules and culture involved with donations etc. however, he is talking about a representative democracy, which requires participation to affect change. One thing that recent attempts at political protest movements such as Occupy Wallstreet, BLM and the Women's March is that a lack of unity in goal and message, just thousands of random voices shouting into a void, will often do very little to bring about actual influence on political situations. Now I'm not sure about your country's political situation, but I find your criticisms somewhat wanting as the video in question is about channeling the anger of the 2016 election, and other political events such as Brexit, that many people feel, and actually putting it to a use that will prove constructive and useful.

Great video! Maybe it was getting off topic, but I'd add that if you have an adversarial relationship with a representative that is going nowhere then it is time to start investigating who his challengers will be in the next election. If you get in on the ground floor trying to help get someone elected you can have an even stronger voice in that it is much more likely you'll get to meet the candidate and, if they get elected, you would hopefully be noticed when you express your opinion on an issue down the road.

Thank you, This seems to be an idea that conservatives understand much better than liberals, at least where I live, and its nice to see a liberal not just falling back on the excuse of "they just wont listen" to excuse laziness. I have done this and it has worked, so I hate to hear that excuse. One thing to point out as well, is that your representative my already want the same thing you do, but they are being block by the rest of the council, or the Governor or whoever. So not only can your contact keep them pushing for what you want but if you don't have a group already they, or more likely their staff, may be able to point you towards one, and tell you who you need to put more pressure on.
@FoldingIdeas
@FoldingIdeas 7 лет назад
A big reason why conservatives have an easier time with this is that their interests are narrow and their goals simple. The best example is the NRA: one issue, one answer - no. That's it. That's all they ever worry about. Gun control? No. So mobilizing that, getting that message though, is super easy. You don't need to explain anything, you don't need to give background, you just need to say no. And that's the same any time you're defending the status quo. You don't need elaborate arguments, you just need to say no to change.
@falconJB
@falconJB 7 лет назад
Folding Ideas I'm sure that is a big part of it, but it also seems like, at least in my area, liberals have an attitude that they are already defeated, that even if the politician is also liberal they just aren't going to listen, where as conservatives have a 'fuck that I'm going to make them listen," attitude. And that may just be where I live, but that is why I really like this video, if only one side is pushing on the system the whole thing goes out of balance and people that need to be heard aren't, not because they have nothing to say or because their voice isn't valuable, but just because they think that speaking up does no good. So, thank you for making this video.

I think a part of that is because of a problem that is kind of entrenched in leftist politics in America, which is elitism and apathy. Lots of leftist leaders tend to try to convince others that people who think differently than them are beneath consideration or discussion (not that movements like the alt-right haven't done everything they can to try to bolster that belief), and they also subscribe to the idea that political apathy is a worthy form of political discourse. It's something that I think needs to change with the left.

I don't think contacting representatives will be an effective solution to the elephant in the room. Contacting representatives is an effective way to deal with so-called "democratic deficits", where representatives don't vote in accordance with the desires of their constituents, either because they're unaware of their constituents' position on the issue (e.g. low-profile issues like mental health) or because they do, but think that they can get away with running counter to it without provoking a backlash (e.g. Obama campaigning on closing Guantanamo, then not doing it after he got into office). Unfortunately, neither of these is the case. Donald Trump being president wasn't the result of some undemocratic process, it was the result of electoral college delegates fulfilling precisely the will of their constituents. No matter what you think of Donald Trump, his election was democratic, and as long as people vote Trump, there's not much you can do to stop him.
@joywolfe.
@joywolfe. 5 лет назад
Olson in this video isn't implying (or at least knowing he's an intelligent man, I assume he isn't) that people write to their representatives to get Donald Trump impeached or something of the like. I think that comment had more to do with the shift in the Overton Window toward the political right leading much of his audience feeling that they don't have much of a voice and need to be informed on how to speak up in times where perhaps the majority of the country (though not numerically, more electoraly) might not be in alignment with their views. This information also isn't inherently just for retaliation against "undemocratic" actions, often times a representative needs to know that whether they have a (D) or an (R) next to their name, there are some issues that both sides within an area agree on that the representative might not have understood or knew about, and thus might act in a way they didn't even realize was representative of their majority (essentially, what we'd call a "silent majority" of people can become a vocal majority)

I disagree with the idea that trump's election was "democratic" but that's because of the Electoral college being fundamentally antithetical to a democracy. For some reason *cough* the maintenance and consolidation of power during slavery and the founding fathers distrust of the general populace's ability to self-govern *cough*, we do still use it though. He was legitimately elected using the system we use, it's just a system that is fundamentally antithetical to democracy.

The country is made up of 50 semi autonomous states that each need proper representation and have direct democratic elections within each state to award that influence. The electoral college system makes perfect sense and worked as intended last year. It is not an obsolete holdover for some antiquated problem like mass physical ballot delivery. There is nothing to dispute.
@leviodom1627

Angelo Desanto Yes it makes perfect sense. The value of an individual's voice is on an equal playing field in their own district. It follows the same pyramid model that government does. It's effect is to allow minority voices to be heard along with the majority. Enough people in enough places wanted Trump elected. Without the electoral system, several large cities would dictate the policies for a very diverse nation. Our forefathers prepared for this. So yes, the majority of people wanted Clinton, but it was mostly in California. Take away California and the results are for Trump. It's a demonstration of the genius that went into creating the system.

If you're arguing that California should have a bigger say in the matter because of their economic contributions, you're promoting an idea that is completely contrary to the representative democracy of the US. The point of it all is to ensure that every person's voice has equal weight in the grand scheme of things. The number of Representatives in each state are selected so that larger states don't dictate the policies of the smaller states, and vice versa. And money is sent to other states because that's how a nation works. We can argue about misusing taxes, and I can firmly say that the government misuses taxes. There's no doubt about that. But nations have areas of economic power and areas of other influence elsewhere - resources, political rule, etc. We can talk about seceding California too, if you want, but that just seems off topic. Division brought us to this mode of politics and the Era of Trump, the Alt-Right, the Regressive Left, and on and on. It would be nice if we could come together as a nation to support each other. That's why elections are so fascinating. Each district shows its representatives their pics and each state sends their electors to represent the will of the state as a whole. Each elector has equal weight in the vote and normally upholds the will of the people. Hillary got the popular, okay. But the weighted vote represented the majority of states and their interests. That's how it works.

Cali contributes the most to national debt, it is bankrupt. What the fuck do you mean?

Angelo Desanto Baseless claims can be debunked with baseless refutations. I don't have a source for you, but before demanding @FrankDaTank1218 site a source, maybe you should have one of your own. That's just good debating.
