Well after a long time on the ship I am back guys and sorry it took so so long. As you know due to Covid-19 restrictions I was basically stuck on the ship the whole time so therefore unable to get time to upload. We do have WiFi however due to the size of the videos it was not possible to upload from the ship.This first video I am posting is in response to the many many of you that asked me the question.......what keeps the containers on the ship, and from falling off so in this video I will try to explain it simply....I am so happy to be home and again able to post here again. I have lots more footage I will be working on and posting very soon. I hope you all are safe and healthy, and I hope we will soon get back to normal life.....

@@JeffOnboard Not so good to be honest. There's very little coming in and even less going out. I'm hoping things will pick up with the start of the potato season around mid-August. Scotland exports thousands of tonnes of potatoes to Egypt from August to December and from a container truck drivers point of view, the workload is utterly crazy. Well, it used to be until this year but I'm still optimistic.

Hi. I'm a truck driver in the UK. And I move containers on my truck all over the UK. Its exactly the same way you put the containers on board ship. Is the same way we put them on skelly trailers. But we have what we call sliding trailers for when we do 20ft containers. Im also from a maritime famliy and was fortunate enough to grow up around ships from when i was able to walk. ! My dad was a ships captain and also had the opportunity when I was a teenager to go away with him was only meant to be for 2weeks but ended up doing 6weeks. Best days of my life and the best experience ever. I encounterd every weather possible!!! And gained my sea legs! And also learned how to sail albeit learnt on board a ship! Not many ppl can say that will now be watching you videos. Would be great if you come to the UK!

Hi Jeff, thanks for another really interesting video. How do they operate the Twist Locks on the upper layers of containers? If they're stacked nine high then that's going to be a long way up to reach!
@jefferyb.3406
@jefferyb.3406 4 года назад
They have a long aluminum bar with a little who come in that they reach up in pullum and a lot of the ships that carry super high like that I have catwalks that they walked a couple levels high also.. Also there is a thing that sometimes the Crane can hold where people stand in the basket platform and the Crane can lift them
@skyh

Very interesting video. How long does it take for all the containers to get locked down in place?
@jefferyb.3406
@jefferyb.3406 4 года назад
It takes about the same amount of time that it does for them to actually load the ship when they are finished loading cargo it's just a matter of minutes after that we are ready to sail to the next port....
@melvinholliday4160
@melvinholliday4160 4 года назад
How do you measure whether or not you are going to be top heavy. With containers weight varying all over the place it looks to me like the ship could easily become top heavy and thus prone to tipping over especially when the counter weight like fuel and other consumables would lighten the load. There must be an awful lot of ballast below the containers to keep from ever being top heavy.
@whew5
@whew5 4 года назад
Another great video. How long does it take to load and unload ?
@jefferyb.3406
@jefferyb.3406 4 года назад
Well it totally depends on how much cargo they have and also how many cranes they put on the ship so it really varies depending on those 2 factors but normally we are in port anywhere from 12 to 24 hours sometimes less a lot of times just for the day time we come in the morning and leave around dinner time that is also common

A liability claim, and possible maritime pollution fines, especially in EU waters. Nominally the failure point is "improper stowage and lashing" but whose responsibility is that? Usually the Captain's as I understand it, even if an offshore crew did the lashing. There doesn't seem to be much forgiveness for an unexpectedly rough sea state undoing even the most diligent stowage work. I guess Captains/Masters need to anticipate everything, including unpredictable acts of Nature, especially these days...

Does the weight of the containers affect placement on the ship, or is the size of the ship enough to cancel that?
@jassonhinkle3598
@jassonhinkle3598 4 года назад
No, the import / export containers are planned in advance and placed accordingly to the chief mates approval. There will be constant back and forth. Your dealing with tides, vessell draft, and ballast. It's important that vessel doesn't list to a certain point. You'll have refrigerated containers that are live, which is important to load on the ship as soon as possible in the case of any slrmd were to arise. That way we can get a mechanic up there to hopefully repair on board and not having to discharge it again. Most of the time, the final approval isn't confirmed untill 8 hrs prior to operation commencement. The lashing is A&B lashing on that vessel. Every container from bottom up correlates to a letter. So if the stack is 5 Hi, it will be A,B,C,D&E. When the lasher's lash back the containers, the superintendent will have an onboard mate approve the lashing before the ship sales. I have major respect for both the lasher's and crane operators. Not easy jobs.

Have you ever been working when container has fallen into ocean?
@mr2i

Why is not the containers linked sideways? Then you would not need the bars for the 2 lowest levels.
@jefferyb.3406
@jefferyb.3406 4 года назад
Yes but I think the bars on the bottom are providing downward pressure whereas side to side would not be doing any of that... That could be part of the reason

How did the pandemic afffect the shipping business ?
@jefferyb.3406
@jefferyb.3406 4 года назад
I know some ships have set on the anchor but it has directly affected the sea farers because a lot of them are still on ships over their time and unable to get off yet I got lucky because my ship comes to USA in the port where I actually live. The time I was out there I did see a lot of the huge ships with big loads still but I know some ships it seem like we're a little less but as far as statistics and figures I don't really know all the details

Im joining Maersk Huacho next week. When i signed off of it in March there was a Chinese 3rd engineer that had completed 5 months and couldnt go home because he was from Hubei and it was locked down. Last i heard he was still onboard. I’ll see if hes still there next week.

@@IKieranIPearson Yes some people are out there right now over their time waiting to go home but I'm lucky because this ship I work on comes to my home port

Yea its pretty tough for the guys onboard now. My ratings are now 9 month contracts as standard so some of those dudes are touching on a year at sea.

I've been wondering how the pandemic has been affecting you. Has your ship been prevented from changing crews over? I heard, this morning of some crews being on ships for over 12 months now. 👍
@jefferyb.3406
@jefferyb.3406 4 года назад
Yes I know some people on foreign ships who are still there and over there time but I am lucky because my ship comes to the port where I actually live so it's easy to get off. A lot of ships on different runs it would require a lot of people flying to and from so they got stuck staying longer than their time

I posted a link earlier to one of the people who commented with more information about that story, but I'm not sure what winch you could use to hold down the containers

Yes just 3 guys trying to keep up and lots of areas are looking great, but also it has been a while since last ship year. Next 5 year yard period is coming soon then new paint....

I think also areas are often covered by containers and always loading and unloading making it hard to do some areas....
