So many of you asked to see more of the engine room so I did this video, but I had to do a voice over because also I was asked to tell about what we were seeing so I did that. On the ship I need to pack smart so I did not have a good microphone to do the voice so please understand that, but I think it will be ok and good enough. I hope you all enjoy and I go back in March and then I will continue with the vlogs so stay tuned....
This video will show each level of the whole engine room space from top to bottom and I did try to explain most of what I was showing, but as always if you have questions I know you guys always ask, and I do my best to get back as soon as I am able.

Wow! This is the most in-depth tour of a large ship's engine room. M&J you have nailed it. Don't have enough words to thank you and your company. So my questions for those whom might be wondering: What is bilge and how it is created? What it's used for? I heard you said the bilge is emptied onto barge, where do they dump it? Secondly, what if a propeller is damaged in mid sea, is there a spare and how do you get it in place? Thanks in anticipation for your response. Keep it up M&J🇬🇾👍

Great video tour of the engine room. I am a High School Maritime Teacher in Pasadena Texas and I just found your vlogs and will be showing some of them to my High School Students who plan on pursuing a Maritime career. This course at Pasadena ISD is sponsored by Port Houston and many other maritime related business partners along the Houston Ship Channel promoting maritime as a great career opportunity. I also sent you a Facebook friend request and look forward to sharing your knowledge with my students. Thanks for taking the time to create quality vlogs that show what life at sea is all about.

Great video and great explanation. Best tour video of engine room I've seen. Saw a show on tv of your engine room. Basic coverage and no detail. Yours was tops! I served in US Navy in engineering so this was in my wheelhouse. We had a nuclear reactor; but also a diesel generator. Your diesel is amazing! But I wonder.... Who is controlling the engine room? Where is everyone? And why are you traveling so slow? In a channel?

It's overwhelming to think about the amount of energy required for these engines to push the tonnage of this ship through the ocean 24/7. Some things were very intimidating, like that giant rotating shaft. If I had your skills and knowledge, I'd be pretty damned pleased with myself. Really appreciate your taking the time to do this. Very impressive. We rely heavily on these ships, yet most have absolutely no idea of the complexities involved.

@JeffOnboard

Thank you for take us along. How many revs does the main engine; 20 @ idle and 80-100 @ cruise speed in clear sea.....? Displacement? Why does it uses 2 turbos? For diesel economy? ty
@mastermariner7813
@mastermariner7813 4 года назад
Believe max rpm is 102. There is no idle. The engine is either stopped or turning the propeller. There is no gearing - it is Diesel Direct. The engine is directly connected to the propeller via the shaft. The engine minimum speed is about 22-24 rpm. Below 22 that there is not enough momentum rotating element to overcome inertia to keep the engine turning. Diesels are most efficient with pressure over atmospheric, plus they are more powerful. More air means more fuel. More air and fuel mean more power. Below a certain engine speed, the turbos do not spin fast enough to supply the needed air, so the auxiliary blower(s) turn on to supply extra air. Believe somewhere about 68-70 rpm the blowers secure and the turbos supply all the combustion air.

@AHJ99.
@AHJ99. 5 лет назад
Speaking from another vessel: yes there are ETOs (electro-technical officers), spare motors usually kept for important motors and sent ashore for rewinding when they break down, it is 440v 3 phase stepped down to consumption voltage of 220v or similar depending on construction, chipping and painting is a constant job for wipers/Oiler’s/motormen and ABs. In Europe you go to a marine engineering school with sponsorship from Maersk (they pay everything for three years of training), not sure about the US guys.

@@JeffOnboard (1) Are you a permanent employee of Maersk, or on a fixed-time contract via SIU? (2) Your ship, Maersk Montana is US-flagged -- they are obliged to hire only US citizens/permanent residents for this ship. Correct?

Does the main engine run both clockwise and CCW? I didn't see a transmission to change the rotation of the screw? And don't worry about the poor soul at posted the thumbs down, some folks just can't be pleased.

Transmissions are usually reduction gear boxes or sometimes taking out all together and just made direct drive.

@@Rosski423 I don't know why he called it a planetary gear,it's just a flywheel with teeth on the circumference so the turning gear can engage into it and turn the engine over during maintenance and repairs.

@@alfamontydog it is a bull gear. the purpose of a flywheel is to store reserve momentum of the engine to smooth rotation. On a slow speed diesel, the bull gear is not designed for that purpose.

Just one engine? Thought it’d had two. I noticed there’s a lot of excess heat everywhere. And still you need a boiler. Suppose it’d be a bit expensive to salvage all this heat for water desalination and other applications.

the fresh water that is used to cool the main engine (jacket cooling water) passes through the fresh water generator in order to boil the sea water and produse fresh water. The fresh water generator 99.99% of the time runs only when the main engine is running and when the r.p.m. of the engine are not fluctuating. It can also be used in an "emergency" when the engine is not running and you need to produse fresh water, with the use of the steam from the boiler, but in this case the production of the fresh water is much lower. :)

what is the main engine exhaust temp. Isthere heat recovery system for the domestic boiler ,in the main engine exhaust. If not . Why?
@jefferyb.3406
@jefferyb.3406 5 лет назад
Great question the exhaust temperature does vary as our speed changes all the time but normally it's around 400 ish and also the exhaust goes up to an economizer which we use to make Steam when we were at sea so we don't need to waste fuel with the regular boiler so yes a lot of that heat is used as it exits to make our steam which is normally about 5 or 6 bar of pressure. 75 to 90 lbs. of steam
