you are the only one I have seen purl the way that I do. cannot remember where I learned to purl this way or if it was just by accident but it is so easy that I have been using it for years now.

The tension is always the issue for me on continental purl, so I always throw. It's all in the pinch! So easy, thank you for sharing.

That is the way I purl as well... I thought I was crazy.. I found my tribe today :)

Yep. I'm a pincher. However I only unvented it today and then searched out "pinch knitting" which is how I found you. I have been working on my knitting tension, purling in particular. Striving to pinch between the needle and yarn helps me purl consistently and with maximum economy of motion.

Thank you for not only the wonderful demonstration but also for explaining it so well in words too! Having a consistent little mantra like that really helps!!!!!

@@JessicaMcDonaldKnits The only problem that I have is when I purl for a long time my wrist does get sore because of the constant rotation which I do much more when purling than knitting. Good thing is that typically you never have to purl too much since people really try to avoid it.
@JessicaMcDonaldKnits
@JessicaMcDonaldKnits 3 года назад
@@ninamariaknitting I have that issue too, but it takes a serious amount of time for that to happen. Like you said, it doesn't happen very often.

Hi Jessica, I'm a new knitter and YES I 'naturally knit 'PURL' the same technique as you. Also THANK YOU for showing me on your CONTINENTAL video how to how the yarn in my hand - I love it!

interesting , so you keep your finger up in the air , must practice that, avoid holding left needle with thumb and forefinger, when I was learning I found myself picking the yarn off my finger , but was looking for a way to smoothly go to purls , so it is looking like you temporarily let go of the left needle in order to pinch when purling. Seen that with throwers , there is that split second of releasing the needle to execute the stitch. Beautiful work , nice tension Something to try out , just because I would love to master all sorts of techniques

Same here. I've crocheted for over 35 years. When I was trying to learn to knit, I started with the throwing method, and just could not get the hang of it. So then I tried continental and do it and hold it just like she does, except that I really don't rotate my wrist. I got to the point that after doing ribbing, I'd get to the end of the row and start to panic a little because I thought I must have knitted instead of purling because it was so easy. But all were done right. I don't mind purling at all now, and don't even have issues with tension. I also like not having my pointer finger in the air. I use it to push the stitches off the end and it works great.

I taught myself to knit continental because I was frustrated that my knitting was so slow when I knit English style. At the beginning I was combo knitting, continental knit, English purl but after being introduced to the Norwegian purl I now do that. I will try your method of purl, I hold my yarn closer to the needles so I will need to practice your method. Thank you for the great tutorial.

I knit and purl exactly like you do. I was taught English style but really didn’t enjoy it. After I had been crocheting many years I saw someone Continental knitting and it was like a light went off. Continental knitting is totally intuitive if you’re a crocheter. I taught myself Continental and love it.

Hi, Jessica! I came across this video today! Thanks! I came to knitting through crochet, so it was always habit for me to hold the yarn in my left hand, and it irritated me to always have to correct myself and move my yarn to the right hand. What a joy to discover continental knitting. But all the videos on purling were so confusing and awkward that I was just about to abandon knitting altogether. Finally I just sat down and analyzed the purl stitch and found I could do it differently than all the videos. I do it basically as you do, so I think you made it up yourself, as I did. It’s so plain and straightforward, I don’t know why there were all these convoluted methods out there. Love your videos!! Thanks!!!

I watched both your knit and purl continental stitches videos. They are the best that I have seen! ❤ I would suggest you link the videos so that it's easy to find them together, or connect both videos into 1 longer video. I would also suggest using very contrasting colors to your background brown table and pink hands. Good luck with your successful channel! 😊

I’m trying to switch to continental after knitting English for about 12 years. The pinching motion to finish the purl is so hard for me. I immediately lose tension when I try it.

I have to laugh! I was taught as an English thrower as a child and have knitted that way for over 50 years. I specifically learned as a lever knitter, long needle tucked under the armpit and the stitches are pivoted over the needle. Since using circular needles over the last few years, tucking under the arm is not viable. My Knit group friends suggested knitting continental, but they laughed at how I purl.... exactly like you. Thank you I feel validated.

Yes, I purl just like this cause I come to knitting by way of crochet. What you have shown me is how to thread the yarn through my left hand. I only had it in between tiny & ring finger & it was too loose. Then I tried double wrapped yarn on first finger, but that was not comfortable/working either. But lacing it your way is better. Thank you! I subscribe too, your overall look is very professional, yet simple. I love it! Best wishes🌺💐

Does the bandaid on your left index finger prevent calluses, or is it just from a boo boo? Serious in question. Seems that the yarn falls nicely along the adding of the band aid.

It might be too much for a noob, but I'm over my projects curling up.

I'm going to try to purl your way. I am just learning but I can't control the tension when purling. My purls are loose and if I want them to be tighter I cause great pain to my hand and wrist. When I knit, my hand and wrist are extremely relaxed ( no pain at all) and my tension is great but I can't figure out my purl tension. Hopefully you may have other tips in case this demo doesn't work for me.

I have no issues with tension when I purl this way. The tensioning for the purl stitch is identical to how I work the knit stitch. Hopefully this tutorial helps you!

Thanks for these videos on continental style. You were curious about your purl style and if anyone else used the same motion. This video demonstrates the "German" or Continental style (she pinches down) versus Russian purl. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vKG85tJcgCQ.html I learned the American style and it has been a very long time since I have knitted and thought this would be a good time to learn continental.
