In this video, you will see examples of continuing pronation vs non-continuing pronation on the serve. Pronation into the contact on the serve is a crucial technical element and should occur every time. However, continuing pronation on the serve does not always occur. This video is titled 2019 because I am still conducting research on this subject and there are numerous top servers who do not continue to pronate on some of their serves. I will continue to collect evidence and will upload a follow-up video in the near future.

Clarifying one single tennis conundrum perfectly. JOB DONE!! Contuing serve pronation just like the modern Eastern Backhand plus flourish follow through just puts too much strain on my Sr. Elbow.

This is a fantastic lesson. I love your free or paid teaching! I do not have the continuous pronation and always wonder if it is ok. Now, I think that I do not have to make the continuous pronation if it is not natural to me. Right? Thank you

Amazing, thanks Nikola - I've been obsessing over this part of my serve lately, and this helps me understand that I should not worry about it.

Very difficult topic, alot of debate regarding it, there seems to be alot of people who have varying opinion on this topic. From what I have gathered from various discussions on forums about this topic, talking to coaches and also alot of players and from my own experience: Continued pronation likely happens when you hit more UPWARDS and RIGHT away from the ball path (on any serve, flat, slice, kick) which adds more spin to the ball, pat doughtery the serve doctor refers to this as hitting UP over the mountain, and when you do that your motion is also more of a cartwheel shoulder over shoulder and the body stays slightly more sideways at contact. All the energy of the pronation after contact still goes up and away, and since it can't go anymore up it goes around and continues to pronate. Thats why Federer and Sampras always continue to pronate, because every serve they hit has massive spin, even if its a faster 1st serve down the T it still has alot of topspin and/or slice on it, and that means they don't go directly through the ball but more away past the ball. When continued pronation does not happen its because after you contact the ball (on any serve flat, slice, kick) you pull down with ur body and arm more instead of continuing to let it swing UP, resulting in slightly less spin and more drive on your serve, now the differences are not that massive, its just slight variations of spin and drive that make up the difference. In any way, when you pull down the arm and racquet by your upper body pulling down sooner, the energy of the pronation after contact still has to go somewhere, but since ur body pulls down earlier it now doesn't go more sideways and continues to pronate but rather goes more down into wrist flexion where the wrist bends down.

Alen, thanks for the comment brother. You bring up some excellent points. Yes Sampras, Federer appear to have constant continuing pronation. However, the number of players who do not always continue to pronate is staggering (I’ll be releasing another video towards the end of the year). There is no correlation between spin and continuing pronation. I have examples of some of the best kick serves in the world with no continuing pronation. Raonic is a player who serves flat and hard and always continues to pronate. On the other hand you have Murray who serves with a lot of variety, often going as you say “away past the ball” and he sometimes continues to pronate and other times not.

A very interesting video! When I try to pronate "all the way" I tend to pronate too early and hit it way off to the right (right hander). Looking forward to part 2 of this video.

Hi Nikola, Thank you for the video explanation of the differences. Very helpful. Do I understand correctly that using a serve with a non-continuing pronation puts less stress on the wrist of the serving hand? For me the deciding factor is how much (or better yet how less) stress I feel in my wrist (which already hurts almost all the time).
@IntuitiveTennis
@IntuitiveTennis 5 лет назад
Hi Dmitry I don’t think non-continuing pronation puts less stress on the wrist. The wrist is protected either way. It should be passive Don’t not actively force wrist movements on the serve It will create problems and possibly lead to injuries Don’t think about the wrist Work the fundamentals

I wonder if some of those variances in pronation in your examples with Ivo and Pliskova were due to off centre hits causing the racquet to torque?
@IntuitiveTennis
@IntuitiveTennis 5 лет назад
Joel, that’s an excellent point. I’m conducting research on off center hits and do not see any correlation on this particular topic. Off center forehands are quite fascinating btw. Very interesting
@IntuitiveTennis
@IntuitiveTennis 5 лет назад
Joel, I didn’t answer your question, read it too fast. If you pause Dr Ivo Serve with continuing pronation right at contact , he hits it right in the middle of the stringbed (little higher which is normal for serves). But as I said above, logical thinking, however, unfortunately no correlation.

Nice follow-up. It looks like you are correct! I remember seeing a picture of Nadal post forehand and his racquet angle was closed almost 45 degrees. For the longest time I believed he hit that way! Lol

Continuing Pronation gives faster speed or more spin but less accuracy.

Nik, I finally realized that I should start pronating on my kick serve, and when I tried it, it gave it extra bite and pace, but accuracy went into the toilet. So much so that I had to stop, especially during matches. Any tips?

so ive just gotten my head around this pronation technique accidentally. i learned this new technique of increasing biceps muscles by doing twist curls. basically lift dumbbell, supinate and pronate exactly the same idea. except for ur holding ur racket and ur wrist is loose as hell. started wondering if thats the reason why serena stosur nadal etc have huge guns? researching everywhere how much biceps factors in on this. nothing in the internet forums, everyones saying biceps isnt much used in tennis, its actually the triceps thats used the most in serve. i know the two muscles are complimentary but i still think u start with biceps at the trophy pose, curl it ,then relax and extend as u throw. any thoughts??. heres a vid btw where this guy talks about biceps ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cOlPpzEaAE8.html (around 1:38) . i hope im making sense thanx.

Santosh, look up the top 20 ace leaders of all time. Not one guy in there with a bicep. I have zero bicep and that video will help, thanks for sharing. I do not see the bicep being a factor on the serve. And furthermore the wrist is not loose as hell in the acceleration phase. I have the final role of the wrist video (serve) coming out next Friday which will hopefully help clarify some of these concerns.
