Yeah, I played in Training Mode. So what? It's still Normal difficulty.
Fortress: 2:26
Train: 9:56
City: 17:53
Seabed: 25:19
Archipelago (Jungle): 35:33
Relic of Moirai: 43:25
Escape: 48:53
Story cutscenes: 50:44
Ending CGI: 1:04:46
I will say this right up front - I hate randomness in shoot em ups. That's why I love R-Type so much. Twitch gameplay is minimized. You move to a specific place, do a specific thing, and you're 100% safe. Contra isn't like that, so getting an S Rank in a few stages is a matter of luck. I hate hate HATE stage 5 for that. Is Lance going to do the pinball attack? Is he going to bounce into me if he does? Screw that. That stage alone is the reason why I didn't do a straight playthrough. Very annoying. Very frustrating.
Contra: Shattered Soldier stage 6 S-Rank was my first ever video recorded for RU-vid back on December 1st, 2007. I wanted to show off, and to my surprise, it got views... and I recorded the rest of the game's stages... and they got views... and holy crap. Subscribers? People can subscribe to what I'm doing? Man, those days. Also, those days of glorious 360p/480p, less than 100mb uploads, and ten minute time restrictions. I deleted the C:SS set a few years later, because I got a copyright claim, and not knowing what that meant, I took them down. None of my videos are monetized, and I don't care too much now as long as they can be viewed (and know who made it), so here we are again.
My favorite Shattered Soldier memory - in 2004, getting to stage 6 with my girlfriend (she was always Lucia), to the part where the cell rises up in the air and shoots blobs down at you. Without speaking, she would run from the right side of the screen over to me, we would both duck at the same time while aiming up and right, and open fire with our machine guns. To be that in sync with another person is a priceless feeling. We were damn good at this game, consistently getting the A-Rank ending.

So for fun, I'm gonna go down and talk about the bosses. As well as stuff seen in the video. Stage 1 *Spider* He's a joke. I swear, you can kill him before he does the missile attack, but I'll be damned if I know how. *Gun Machine* I hate this thing. Not because it's difficult, but because it's so damn boring. Shoot a gun on one side. Wait a bit. Repeat until one side is done. Do the same to the left side, occasionally dodging a lightning bolt. Then shoot the core until it dies. Boring. Takes too long. Bleh. *Snake* It died. Tiny thing, but the best way to deal with the Flyman canyon is to just jump while firing the flamethrower. It works a lot better than that strategy. Even though Flymen are basically harmless either way. *Mr. Heli Rob-Er, Slave Beast Taka* See you in stage 6, Mr. Heli Robo. Probably one of my favorite incarnations of Taka. Nice and fun, if a tad easy. Second form is fucking hideous and _I love it_ Also, you can constantly fire grenades before Taka shows up to get in a little extra damage on Taka when he finally drops in. Nothing major, just kills him slightly faster. Stage 2 *I think this thing has a name but I forget. Anyways, Flying Warship* Another long miniboss, but unlike the Gun Machine this thing is constantly changing, so it's much more enjoyable. I love the kamikaze missile dudes though just because of how silly they are. *Cannon* Memorization. Plain and simple. Nothing hard. You can literally sit next to the cannon and destroy the orbs as they fly at you. Sets it up nicely to take the cannon out in one fell swoop. *A bunch of bike guys* They died. *R9's Long Lost Brother (featuring two random Options)* A weird fight. But it's pretty neat. That other option shoots machine gun bullets, in case anyone wants to know. Wow, I've... Never seen the Not-R9 do that before. I've only ever seen it spam the ground lasers. Love how fragile it is though. *Super Power Robot Yokozuna Jr* Yes, that's its actual name. Fun fact, the Jr comes from how it's basically a remake of a boss from Contra Hard Corps. That boss's name? Super Power Robot Yokozuna. Without a Jr. Everyone calls him GTR and it annoys me because that's not his name at all. GTR refers to those three transforming robots in the good ending route. Because it's a reference to Getter Robo. Anyways. Like the fight. Dig the music, too. Stage 3 Why are sandbags targets? Meh... *Floating Bird Nest Garth Base* Another returning face from Contra 3. Not too bad though. *Blob Thing* Strange fight. If you get on top of the grinder when it moves to the left to drop those spike-eggs, it'll rush at you. Aside from that, fairly simple. Delightfully gruesome death though. *Emperor-Demon Dragon God Java* Not as involved as the Hard Corps fight, but still interesting in its own right. Still not that bad. *Crawler Tank* Another great boss. All sorts of things go on in this fight and it's absolutely delightful. Stage 4 *Jet Ski Mech* Probably my favorite miniboss in this game. This thing feels like a boss fight in its own right. Unlike the stupid Gun Machine, this thing is constantly changing depending on how you damage it. Changing its patterns, pulling out new attacks, all that jazz. For the backpack, you can actually get underneath of it, behind where the bombs spawn. Then you can use the flamethrower and aim it upwards to damage the backpack and shoot down the missiles the mech shoots at you. This'll also let you deal enough damage to kill the backpack while the mech starts jumping around. All about positioning, really. Also, you can stay at the top left of the screen and the mech will not hurt you while it's jumping around as well. Lets you deal more damage to the gun that way. The flamethrower/charge blast deals heavy damage to both the mech and the jet ski as well, but you have to be a tad more daring to deal with the missiles when the mech starts shooting its handgun. They're slow though, so its not that hard to shoot them down. When it opens its core, you can also stick pretty close to it to damage it with your flamethrower. This'll kill it in two "cycles". Again, positioning. *Camera Singularity Head* Weird boss. Not hard, though. A shame you probably can't kill it before it does the ground lasers, not that they're hard to dodge. *Jinmen-Gyo* Another sweet boss. Also a nice Rocket Knight Adventures reference. Stage 5 *SUV-Snail* When this boss wants to use its aerial-bomb attack, it's simple. When it wants to spam the bubbles, it's only slightly annoying. *Door* Hello, old friend. And goodbye. *Lance* Fucking pinball attack. Aside from that, it's all about positioning and reflexes to dodge his attacks. The one attack that he was starting before he was defeated was this simple floor/wall/ceiling-crawling wave. Just stay behind him and jump when the wave comes towards you. You can deal some serious damage to him as well. *Emperor-Demon Evil Heart Gomera Mosking* A joke. Kill the facehugger spawners and he's helpless. *Tissue Helminth* Again, a joke. He doesn't even attack aside from moving at you... *Shadow Beast Kimkou x2* Suddenly, two Kimkous. Slightly more difficult than the previous midbosses, but still nothing special until the surviving one whips out the beam-rain attack. Until then, he's easy. *Alien Gummy Plant* Flamethrower. It dies before it does the ground laser attack. *Emperor-Demon Gyaba* And another returning face from the classic series. Nice and involved. Stage 6 *Mr. Heli Robo* Hello again! Fairly tricky first phase. Second phase is simple though. Just know how to react to each of the things he can do. *Buu??* Uh... Anyways. Not too hard. He's got two attacks. The orb attack, and the limb-extension thing. Neither are that hard to dodge. *Celestial Frog* Somewhat annoying. Although the spinning doodads have a safespot, you can't really damage the boss while you're in the safespot. So playing it risky is the best way to kill him. *Jellyfish* Meh. The little jellyfish can be annoying, but it's not that bad. *Relic of Moirai* Sit in the corner and shoot upwards. It dies. *Heart of Moirai* Yes, the strategy in the video is real. It doesn't look like you should be able to do it, but you can. Stage 7? *Dying Moirai* Aside from the Frog Fireball, this boss is simple. But that damn Frog Fireball. There's some odd bit of randomness to it, and it's irritating to dodge. Aside from that, the boss is just a bullet sponge. And there you go.

Aside from Lance with his pinball attack, the boss I have the hardest time with is that construction machine in the first stage when I'm playing solo. Having to keep an eye on one side while I'm standing beneath the other is tough for me. It was SO much easier when I used to play with my ex-wife and she would just stand there and use the flamethrower to destroy the missiles until we had to run to the other side. =)
@DMSwordsmaster
@DMSwordsmaster 6 лет назад
Really, if you stick to one side, the other side generally cannot hit you. It's best to leave the other side alone until you've completely scrapped the first side. You do have to stick near the middle to avoid the shotgun and flamethrower, but as long as you keep an eye on yourself, it's not that hard. Just vaguely shoot where the enemy is while keeping an eye on yourself and it's not hard. And when one side of the machine is destroyed the other is basically fodder.

They're more than just security guards. They are an collection of genetically-modified artifical beings created by an ancient, omniscient race of sentient beings that have ascended to a higher plane of existence, thus they were never seen again. Yes; I love it when Contra has a lot of twists and turns but I would love them to expand more on the Red Falcon's origins (as with the case of R-Type exploring the Bydo's origins in the later games) and return to this part of the Contra storyline as well as expanding more upon it.

Awesome playing. Just watched the entire vid. Going back to this game it doesnt seem nearly as hard as I remember it when I was 21 in maybe 2002. I bought it full price and it was so brutal I hardly ended up playing it. Playing it again now Im learning much faster and the patterns seem simple. Its just that you have to memorize when the patterns change and be ready to deal with them. Im going through on easy now to learn the game some, then Ill work on normal. Interesting about increasing lives and continues permanently. Can you leave the game running in a safe spot and rack up continues or lives?
@matrixandraia
@matrixandraia 5 лет назад
We're nearly the same age. =) I found Neo Contra to be easy when I first played it, but this was not to the game's detriment - I was used to Shattered Soldier when I bought NC, and NC was fun, and super duper hammy with the voice acting - I'm glad that people finally came around to it, unlike when it first released. Extra lives are so freely given in this game that I don't think you'd need to stay anywhere and farm for points - this game is very forgiving, especially if you're not trying to S-Rank everything. Good luck. =)

Nice. Neo Contra I blazed through on Ps2 pretty quickly. Cant say it was very good but brief fun. Ive gone through super c and contra on nes legit without codes as well. Contra 3 I only beat the japanese version which was much easier, same for contra hardcore. A few other later remakes on wii, xbox 360, etc. Nice. I was more interested in those permanent lives upgrades. I thought that might help for normal, especially some permanent credit increases like you mentioned early on.
@matrixandraia
@matrixandraia 5 лет назад
Contra’s difficultly was always way overblown by the gaming press in the ‘90s. Just like with any shmup, all it takes is practice. I didn’t know that Japanese Contra III was easier - I own the NA version. I played HC on an emulator like ten years ago and I could not believe that you got a life bar 😂 but no complaints. I haven’t played NC or C:SS in a while - I’m not sure exactly what provokes permanent extra continue or life upgrades - my ex-wife and I got continues playing C:SS together and I got lives playing solo, but I’m not sure if it was time played or score related when the increases happened 👍👍👍
@theconsolekiller7113
@theconsolekiller7113 5 лет назад
Completely agreed. The NES ones I consider moderate games , challenge wise. Many common NES games were much harder. Sometimes that was for reasons like bad control but not most of the time. Gun.Smoke for arcade is disgustingly dense and difficult and is one Im working on now. The NES one can be challenging but the arcade uses the extra power to fill the screen with crazy patterns and density. Both the japanese versions of Super Contra 3 and Contra Hard Corps are much easier. I think one reason was unlimited continues on both. You might have played the japanese contra hard corps on emulation. I think thats the only one with a life bar, but I might be off. Great feedback. I was curious cuz otherwise Id leave it running on a safe spot and come back and work on it. Either way I plan on going through normal next. Not S ranks like you. Thats very impressive.

Do you remember me? Me and you were comparing our Contra Shattered Soldier stuff to each other back in... Boy, this would have been like 2012 or 2013. Remember you did a no death run? You said you and your girlfriend had gotten good together playing cooperatively? I said you were so good, what were you, under house arrest for a couple of years to have gotten so good? :P Just wanted to say I never forgot your videos and I mention you on a shattered solider video walkthrough I'm making now for fun during the holidays. I remember your name, but not what we talked about specifically. =) My girlfriend from 2003 and 2004 - we were good at this game, consistently getting an A rank throughout the game. I married her, but we've been divorced for a really long time now. I doubt if I'll ever know someone in real life like her again. The Contra thing was unheard of and totally unexpected, and is one of the memories that I cherish. I tried getting through the game with an S Rank when I was recording in 2017, but Lance's first form kept getting me with the pinball attack and I got tired of it, so I played cheap and just did it in Training Mode to take some of the pressure off. I did delete my old Contra: Shattered Soldier videos, because back when this first happened - copyright claims on some of the stage videos - freaked me out. Years later I know that they're fine, because the videos are still viewable (and I don't monetize any of the anyway - if you ever see ads on my videos it's because they were copyright claimed by someone else), but back then, I had no idea, and took them down so I wouldn't make trouble for myself. They might still be on my old PC from 2006, but I'm not going to upload them again. I can't believe someone else remembered them! XD It's always nice to hear kindness from people that I spoke to way back. If you do make a C:SS video, let me know, and I'll have a look - that'd be cool.

@@matrixandraia Nice to hear that you remembered. I don't have the best memory, but I did enjoy your videos because I was playing the game back in 2012/13 and I enjoyed watching your stuff. (Did you also have some Contra 4 videos at one point? It occurs to me you did.) What did you and I talk about? Nothing much. Just spoke about the game. There was one thing in particular that I remembered about you and your videos-and see if you remember this: there was some idiot in one of your C:SS videos commenting that the flamethrowerʼs energy shot was unfeasible to use because it took three seconds to charge. Three seconds, you said to this guy! How stupid do you have to be to think something that takes half a second takes three bloody seconds! That was the gist of the conversation. I can't remember exactly what was said, as it's been about six years ago. But it still to this day makes me laugh, how the exchange went down between you and this idiot who you just eviscerated in the comments. Too funny! Sorry about your wife. @@BickBenedict1 I have Contra 4 on the DS - I used to enjoy playing it, but it's been a number of years since I have. I used to be able to get through the game on Normal in one life. I never made any videos for Contra 4 because I didn't have the hardware to record off of a DS back then. I don't now, and I've never looked into it. The flamethrower in C:SS is way powerful, but it has its place in the game, that's why I didn't use it all the time. C:SS is like a puzzle where you need to use the right weapons at the right times or you're going to die. There's a small part of RNG that can screw you anyway, no matter how well you're playing, and that's my only thing against this game.

Oh man, pardon my last reply - I had woke up to turn off my computer and go back to sleep when I saw it, haha. I recorded the arcade version of Contra from XBox Live in late 2007 - it's one of my earliest videos. I don't know how to record from the Nintendo DS, so I never did Contra 4. I used to be able to beat Normal in one life, but I only beat Hard once, and that was around the time I quit playing it (in early 2008 I think). I never owned a Wii, so I never played ReBirth. Super Cyborg looks exactly like a Contra game, so maybe I'll download it on Steam eventually. I've been playing more casual stuff after EDF5, because of burnout - Onechanbara Z2 Chaos (not exactly casual) and The Witch and the Hundred Knight - you know, easier stuff so I can chill out. Eventually I'm going to get back to shmups - I was playing Sine Mora on the Switch before I started with EDF in 2017 - but I have no idea what I'll be good at and want to record next, or when I'll get to it. Oh, and I'm finished with EDF5 - I recorded every single stage before I uploaded, that way I wouldn't have to be playing and recording and stressing about it while I did, so I'm done - I'm so burned out with the series that by the time the next one comes out, maybe I'll be back to normal. I'll see you around on Twitch sometime randomly. =)

Oh holy SHIT, okay you know what? I will take all the RNG in this fucking game, BUT WHY DO THE MENUS SUCK SO BAD? WHY CANTS I JUST QUIT OUT? YOU CANT EVEN JUST QUIT OUT OF TRAINING MODE, YOU HAFTA DIE OR FINISH THE STAGE! WHY IS THIS UI SO BADLY DESIGNED?!
@Mr_x_19922

Training mode justified, this game is way too extremely hard, but I think I could beat it on normal, but only the first 5 stages

Yeah. I could've done it with an A Rank while recording, but I wanted to show off. I really should've just done it with the A Rank though.

Aha, no, she's still my ex-wife. I haven't spoken to her in years. I didn't tell her that I was doing this either, but I have to give credit where it's due.Of my shoot em up videos that I uploaded in 2017, this is the one that I'm least proud of, and for one reason - too much RNG when you fight Lance in Mission 5. That damn pinball attack. Originally it was going to be a no miss playthrough, but after choosing the Retry option four times in Mission 5 because of that attack, I said screw it, and just went with Training Mode so I wouldn't have to go through four long stages before I had to deal with the game randomly deciding to screw me. I am a little surprised that this video has so many views, and it makes me happy that people are still interested in Contra after so many years.Thank you for the kindness. =)

MatrixAndrAIa awww,i was expecting some sort of magical comeback of your ex dude...but yeah,contra is one of thouse childhood sagas that some people cant forget with such an easy,but yeah,Lance can be a pain in the ass when it comes to randomize attacks and dont worry,allways here to support :D

i found that worm on a conveyor belt a pain on thr ass.
@matrixandraia
@matrixandraia 7 лет назад
The ping pong balls the worm shoots can be tense, but your jump is long enough to cross most of the stuff it drops. My most hated bosses are Lance, again, because he bounces around like a pinball and it's too random. The other is the factory machine in stage 1. It's fun with two players, but by yourself it's way too easy to get yourself killed. And by the way - since you'd asked me a long time ago - I have Dariusburst Chronicle Saviors on the PS4 - it's fun, but not entirely my preference. I stopped playing it right around the time I was practicing R-Type Final in May 2017. =)

MatrixAndrAIa yeah, DBCS is not a dealbreaker for most. Im a fan of the series so i was gonna like it either way.
@matrixandraia
@matrixandraia 7 лет назад
Oh, don't get me wrong, I like DBCS, but I'd have to try out some of the other games. Unfortunately, most of the time when I go looking for shoot em ups, the prices are god awful, and I'm not going to spend as much as people ask to take a risk on liking/disliking something. =/
@KingFossilFER
@KingFossilFER 7 лет назад
MatrixAndrAIa yeah some of the prices are a kinda high. Personally I would only recommend DBCS to be on sale; regular price is quite high for not including any DLC, even with all the stuff you have available by default. most of the shmups on steam are bullet hells anyway, and they all look so similar. theres more intersting shmups found through emulation
@matrixandraia
@matrixandraia 7 лет назад
And that's what I did - I waited until the Steam Summer 2017 sale and bought a ton. I haven't played any yet (as of mid July 2017), but why not? I'm not in love with bullet hell, but they have their place. I hooked up my PS2 with a composite/HDMI switch, so I got a decent amount of stuff to play now. =)

How is stage 5 luck based, exactly? EDIT: Okay, I can understand that I suppose. Those propellers actually have a pretty easy solution. If you aim down-right with the flamethrower and just walk forward, the hitbox will let you push past them without you dying. And it kills the facehuggers on the ground. (In case you don't believe me, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GYYvZ4AFGUs.html)

I was talking about Lance's pinball attack. It's way too random to get around 100% of the time. The first day I was recording, I had to restart stage 5 four times (with Retries) and he did that to me every single time, which is why I just decided to go with the Training Mode option. Funnily enough, I was able to S-Rank the stage twice in a row - first when I was recording, second when I was recording the cutscenes. I don't need the flamethrower to get past the propellers. The one that's hanging straight down is easier to just jump over. The others can be safely pushed with short bursts of machine gun fire, which is how we used to do it in 2004, and I still do now.
@DMSwordsmaster
@DMSwordsmaster 7 лет назад
Your other two replies were quite hostile, I must say. I wasn't referring to the propellers being luck based. Not in the slightest. I just pointed out another way that's actually quite simple, and doesn't require basically any jumping shenanigans. I get that my placement was pretty confusing though. Plus I edited my comment about three minutes after I posted it because I saw the description after watching a part of the video, noting what you mean about luck based stuff.
@matrixandraia
@matrixandraia 7 лет назад
I know my previous comments came off as hostile - that's why I deleted them. When I read the message (from the bell icon), it only had your original message without the edit. I try to be kind to people, so you have my apologies for that.
@DMSwordsmaster
@DMSwordsmaster 7 лет назад
That's okay. You must have misinterpreted my original comment as being hostile itself, which it wasn't intended to be. That's fine. I will applaud you for actually noticing that the stage 6 end-boss can actually be stood under. It doesn't look like you could do that at all, and I've seen quite a few S-rank people actually miss that detail, haha.
@matrixandraia
@matrixandraia 7 лет назад
Oh yes, that's relatively new. My ex-wife and I used to use the flamethrower, duck and fire up right at it, and then move back to the left, and whip it up to forward when the cells swam upward. I started using the grenade launcher when I was practicing in the month prior to recording. I did notice that if you didn't do it ASAP when you could start moving, they would get you, so it was still a risk. They almost did get me in the recording. O_O;; but I'd practiced it enough to know I could usually get it. Again, pardon my initial hostility, and thank you for the kindness.
