Control Explained - What is the Tennyson Report?

Hello everyone. Documents can be found all around the Oldest House. Some relate to previous Altered Items and AWEs. Some are interdepartmental memos of agents venting frustration or commenting on the oddness they experience. One in particular is said to be a banned topic and that Trench is looking to crucify whoever has a copy, especially the one who wrote it. What exactly is the Tennyson Report and why is it so controversial?
Please feel free to have free discussion in the comments section below.
Enjoy!

@@GamingUniversityUoG I knew he was talking about Lord Alfred with his cat and his previous cat was Sylvia Plath but I never found the report so I couldn't make the connection. And honestly I thought he didn't really care about the work here since he seemed kinda useless, losing so many altered items and forgetting about Philip. When Jesse was more formally "Director Faden" I was like "now when can I fire that guy..." But I suppose it's good to know he does at least care about the work.
@vasheeri
@vasheeri Год назад
@@LMichaela94 Few things, firstly it is not his fault he lost the items as they were hiss possessed in an active lockdown. as shown with the TV and anchor they can literally alter the very fabric of reality as we know it, and with the hiss corruption what used to work to contain them no longer worked. really the only things keeping some of these items in those rooms are just appeasing what ever random need they require to be pacified. and with phillip he says it himself, he has had an absolute shit ton on his plate from what is going on...its honestly impressive with everything considered that his ticking time bomb of a department is still so well maintained.
@mixtersushi
@mixtersushi 10 месяцев назад
@vasheeri I'd like to add that I don't think he intended to start a revolution per se, but to get other people thinking about the Altered Items in a different way. Langston gives me some autistic vibes. He's likely a man of ritual himself, so he'd figure out pretty quickly that these items have little rituals that keep them "behaving". Some items seem to have more power or a stronger will than others, so there are still some that can be kept in line better than others. For the rest, Director Faden seems to be able to completely rid them of their otherworldly influence. Trench was more of a dictator, while Faden has a more level head on her shoulders. As a former civilian, she has a completely different perspective than her predecessors.

If you observe that chanting in latin makes your SCP table stop floating in midair, and you can repeat this test several times to the point in which you can predict that it will happen every time, that is science, you did science right there
@GamingUniversityUoG
@GamingUniversityUoG 2 года назад
I will be able to add more on top of this when I get to talking about the Christmas Tree Altered Item. All the rituals the Bureau learned to pacify the objects was learned from that Altered Item. As Langston says, it is not superstition if it works. The science part comes in when trying to figure why saying these words has an effect. Sound vibrations, the intention behind the words, programming? Lots of options.
@laigron7884
@laigron7884 Год назад
@@GamingUniversityUoG Agree. That why i like they used words like Thaumathurgy. But Paranatural may be more applicable because by standard definition supernatural is something you just cant understand why. Which would drove bureau scientist mad. On the other side i can get behind knowing why it works. If you know how it works than you could change meaning of it or possibly alter altered item. Or atleast it's reaction

Right? Even the examples that this channel creator gives -of humanity's past beliefs about earthquakes and lightning etc- pretty much back up that the modern FBC approach is correct. If something can be categorised and "explained" by science, then it isn't arcane in the sense of something being completely unknowable and just being that way because it is that way.
@AnMComm
@AnMComm 6 месяцев назад
@@GamingUniversityUoGI have a strong suspicion that "paranatural" is not only a "scientific" term, but also a more suitable one in terms of documentation. The reports are supposed to be written in an obscenely dry, official language that makes you feel as if you're chewing a boot sole. "Paranatural" does exactly that. You can probably thank Wake for making it like that.

That's so wild, I hadn't realized the connections between the poem and our eccentric cat lover Langston. I will say though that the 'Left Brain = Logic, math, and Right Brain = emotion, creativity' is a *very dated and inaccurate* understanding of our brains. (This is about as absurd as the myth that 'we only use 15% of our brains, but it has been so wide spread that movies and hack articles love to lean on these debunked theories in order to sell you on yet another wildly unfounded idea) In reality, logic and creativity is not mutually exclusive to either sides of our brains. Similarly, the differences of a 'male brain' vs 'female brain' is often related to the average sizes of women vs men. I would strongly encourage checking out some of the many articles out there that discuss and break down these myths and where they came from. (Plus I'm just a youtube comment, I'd rather you not even take my own word without you checking for yourself.) It was a nice poetic comparison to bring up the myth of right/left brain male/female brains to explain science vs superstition in control as being a union of two sides, but it is wildly incorrect.
@GamingUniversityUoG
@GamingUniversityUoG 2 года назад
Thank you for the comment. Trust me I take any and all observations that go against my thinking seriously and appreciate it I learn things from you all as well every day. The information I presented was from some recent articles but I fully understand it is not a 'one size fits all' situation. I mean rationally what is the difference between calculation versus intuition? Intuition is unconsciously processing the information while calculations are consciously doing it. The two lobes are intrinsically tied together. However, I understand that one side doesn't so the job 100% in a certain type of thought. I think that is where the myth comes in. Suffice it to say psychology is far more complicated that over simplifying a thing. I think my inclusion of it here is more of a poetic comparison between science/faith rather than a literal one. I looked into part of the brain that experiences religious experience and it is all over the place and not confined to a single spot.
@Undlark
@Undlark 2 года назад
@@GamingUniversityUoG Absolutely agree in regards to breaking down the age old idea that logic should be the opposite of creativity. Since things like puzzle solving requires creativity, or 'thinking outside the box.' We have so many contradictions in our language about what it is to be logical vs creative. I'd sooner just use an analogy of the expression of art using math (such as architecture, and impossible shapes) to make an example of unifying Logic and creativity than using the organ between our ears as an example. In any case, I enjoy seeing you explore the depths of Remedy! And I actually am excited to see if they may pick up more on the conflicts between the two groups in future Control/AW games now that you've brought this to my attention.

@@GamingUniversityUoG Psychologist with a specialty in Neuroscience here. To say the concept of a creative hemisphere and a rational hemisphere is outdated is a vast understatement. Today we know that every brain function is associated with vast neural networks that spans over both hemispheres. The exceptions are very, very rare (speech comes to mind, as it is localized in the left hemisphere [for most people]). So I hope you understand that me and many of my colleagues get triggered everytime this pseudo scientific nonsense gets reiterated again and again and again. And it doesn't help that in most cases the attempt to correct the content creator just results in a lukewarm 'your right, but i just wanted to demonstrate / compare / simplify...' It is factually incorrect. And saying that you use it 'just as a poetic comparison' doesn't change the fact that you are spreading misinformation. You would not use the 'fact' that the earth is actually flat as a poetic comparison, would you? Your Channel is called 'Gaming UNIVERSITY' goddarnit. I expected more of someone that associates himself with education, even if it is just in name. (Apart from that the video was ok. and I really appreciated your video on Chester Blessed.)

Not being able to understand how something works doesn't equal "accepting the esoteric beliefs". For example, we don't really understand how some galaxies rotate the way they do. We can theorise that there is dark matter (which we don't understand either) that provides additional mass/gravity. We don't start thinking that it is God's hand that's rotating the galaxies. The same way Dr. Darling must surely accept the empiric proof that Langston's "rituals" work, but he would still try finding an explanation for them. In my view, the scientists are clearly in the right here. The Report's clear disdain for scientific terms puts it plainly in the realm of mythological thinking, which is harmful and unenlightened. Great video! I actually never found that place where the report is, and was like "wow, there's a secret area there!"
@GamingUniversityUoG
@GamingUniversityUoG 2 года назад
That is a fair enough perspective. Using your example, I'm curious if because we have a general idea about the movement if galaxies we accept or will figure it out someday. We at least know the question that we are to answer. Would it be fair to say some esoteric ideas, as the report puts it, are so outside of our realm of understanding that we dont even know how to ask a question about it? I have a feeling that Darling was getting an idea near the end. Saying that maybe resonance is the solution we need to bust the case wide open.

The problem of using superstition in a place like the oldest house is that you may give extra power to forces that feed on belief ... Trench knew about the importance of rituals to keep the altered items calm but he also knew that he must use science to lock them away for example using resonance in control point and using black rock to lock OOP and AI ... so in a way science in the oldest house works like magical thinking that help keeping things under CONTROL

The "science rejects something because it can't figure out how something works" idea rests on the idea that science doesn't apply to determining if an effect exists. While that has been a popular idea, a lot of actual science is about determining if an effect exists apart from randomness. Considering the role of psychology in creating the altered items, the guesswork that certain rituals would fit a certain mechanism to handle them makes plenty of sense from a scientific view. While the depiction of science is incorrect, the idea that ritual emerges as a more practical set of steps is novel enough to some people that I guess it becomes fodder for writers.
@GamingUniversityUoG
@GamingUniversityUoG 2 года назад
100% agree. I dont look at science as being 'wrong' in this story. Just the need for an ordered, rational universe causes some things to be ignored. But what they do understand is accurate. There are some who believe that science will eventually explain religion once we have the ability to measure abstract aspects of nature. This document brings this idea up and forces it into discussion. On a side note, in Homer's odyssey there was a magical plant consumed by the hero which made him immune to the witch Circe's potion. Superstition. After review of the text, botanists were able to find it and discovered that it did have properties to nullify certain poisons. Science learns later what the ancient people knew despite not having the ability to know why.

@@GamingUniversityUoG Science is not one thing. You have experimental scientists who try to figure out what the world does and you have theoretical scientists who try to come up with theories/models to predict what the world will do given what we have seen so far. Scientists at the end of the day very much have a "what works, works" philosophy. The difference is that they have much higher standards for deciding something works and they want to break it apart to find the minimum of what works and a theory to predict what else will work. If the light switch being flipped 3 times solves the issue, great. But, can you do it with 1 flip? What if you point a flashlight and flip it on and off? The word choice (thaumaturge, parautilitarian) is meaningless here. The real issue is that Langston is saying "who cares why, we just need to figure out the rituals to make them happy". Meanwhile, the former is occupying the fridge and instead of rituals to appease it you are better off fighting the cause.

I think the answer lies somewhere in between. Everything has a logic to it, but in the case of Control, some of those logical connections may lie outside our realm of understanding and perception, and therefore be impossible to define. I don't think the answer lies in treating it like magic, I think the decision to treat everything like a serious science is the right one, but to reject a working procedure because you don't understand it is ignorant. After all, "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

The Oscillator was acquired by the Bureau and contained in the Possessed Objects Gallery, which you state is the same place as the Panopticon, the only difference being the Archival Mandate name change. Assuming I understood you correctly here, I have the following question: Seeing as The Oscillator was acquired and subsequently contained by the Bureau on the 28th of July 1954, how can the Possessed Objects Gallery be the same place as the Panopticon? The Panopticon, I think we all agree, is located within the Oldest House, right? @GamingUniversityUoG
@GamingUniversityUoG 2 года назад
The Bureau operated out of a different place before the Oldest House was discovered. This Possessed Object Gallery was probably in DC somewhere or some random facility. Trench was the one who set aside funding for the Panopticon according to Langston. So this would be long after they initially found the House. The gap in time between the pre-house era and trench becoming director is never detailed. But I imagine they relocated the gallery for convenience sake.

As for the rest of the video, I'm copypastaing something I wrote elsewhere on the Tennyson Report, but first I would like to address the bit where you've added: "Faith - Does it work?". Incorrect! Science DOES concerns itself with if something works, it's part of the Scientific Method. Faith doesn't give a flying fuck if something doesn't work, it will still insist that it does. Anyway, here's what I did on the report: Science is not the enemy, science is the ally. Langston fails to understand this because he lacks a basic understanding of how science works. If he had had this basic understanding of science, he would've realized that his work with the Altered Items was him doing science. He would've also understood that Altered Items do not fit under the 'Supernatural' umbrella term: If one cannot demonstrate that something does exist, then how is that different from something that doesn't exist? There is no difference. The reality of Altered Items is scientifically demonstrable, and the same goes for the observations he has made while interacting with Altered Items. Anyone who is of the mindset that Altered Items are just items needs to be taken downstairs to the Investigations Sector, and be introduced to Fra. This enemy he describes as the 'close-minded cult of logic and data', he is entirely correct about them being the enemy, but he is completely ass-backwards about what makes them the enemy: These people have abandoned logic and data and replaced it with whatever suits them. You need look no further than Dr. Darling for a textbook example of such an individual. Dr. Pope and Dr. Underhill have produced counteressays to research papers penned by Dr. Darling where they both call him out on him making wild-ass assertions with zero science backing it up. Langston doesn't have to be upset for much longer, though: With Dr. Pope as Head of Research, actual science has come home again. And once Dr. Pope gets a free moment to examine Langston's work, I'm pretty sure he'll be consulted on matters pertaining to Altered Items in the future. So in closing, since Langston decided to start out with poetry to express himself, I shall dedicate some poetry back to him regarding the bright future that is in store for the Bureau under the leadership of Director Faden: "This is one moment, but know that another shall pierce you with a sudden painful joy." - T.S. Eliot
@GamingUniversityUoG
@GamingUniversityUoG 2 года назад
Thanks for your response. If it was interpreted that 'science is the enemy' then I apologize. It was not my intention in the slightest. Langston certainly does care if something works. I use the audio clip of him saying so. My point is they don't care about the mechanics of 'how' it works when you have faith in something. Science is all about trying to uncover the mechanisms of the natural world to learn how it works. In this fictional setting both are necessary. Langston'a frustrations likely originated under the former administration where his believes were discounted. Otherwise he wouldn't have written the tennyson report in the first place. Under this current administration I don't think it will be as much of an issue. It might seem like a really odd person to quote but Crowley said, "Our method is science, Our aim is religion." Take of that what you will.

@@GamingUniversityUoG Nonono! This bit was not a response to your video! It was a post I made earlier that evening on the Tennyson Letter fandom page! I decided to copypasta it here cause no point writing two different versions of it when I can just use the first one. My copypasta here is targeted as either speaking directly to Langdon, or just nobody in particular. Not you! You're fine!" Sorry about that misunderstanding. It was a late night last night.. I think what Langston is going through isn't as simple as it being a science vs supernatural thing. Give a listen to the entire monologue he delivers at Director Faden during "AWE". He seems to be bullied by coworkers due to his experiences with Altered Items. He has also witnessed Fra being ridiculed by members of the Investigations Sector. He mentions having previously been seeing a therapist, but stopped going because the NDA he has to sign for work doesn't allow him to say anything, so it was pointless. So it's work-related reasons that he initially looked to get therapy for, seeing as there was nothing else on his mind for him to talk to the therapist about. He mentions that the therapist did give him one very good advice in order to deal with stress in a healthy way: Art Therapy, basically, which he has been doing for a while now, and has been helping him a lot. Said art therapy is those freestyle recordings you find in "AWE". So, he has got a lot of shit going on. Clearly! But I think it'll work out all right. He seems entirely comfortable with just telling Director Faden everything that's going on with him, so he's getting a bit of therapy there, and we all know that Director Faden would keep it to herself.

The funny thing is that your own examples about humanity's beliefs pretty much prove the Tennyson Report wrong. I am failing to follow your reasoning in regards to Archive Mandate 8.A. There is no document in the game that outlines exactly what this mandate is for. What information we have on said mandate is a notice included in certain documentation, which reads: "NOTE: Per Archival Mandates 8.A, this document has been edited to meet current administrative standards. Certain terminology may be out of date." You then present us with the following claim: "This documentation mandate is done with the intention to remove any and all concepts that relate to superstition or magic." then present The Oscillator Case File, that includes the mandate notice at the beginning, to talk about an example of terminology that you think the mandate addresses. How, though? If the mandate addressed the usage of "Possessed Object Gallery" you would not be able to sit here and talk to us about the "Possessed Object Gallery" because there would be a big, fat [REDACTED] blocking you from doing so. The note at the beginning clearly state that: "Per Archival Mandates 8.A, this document has been edited to meet current administrative standards." Since the term "Possessed Object Gallery" is still completely eligible in the case file, and the same is true for your other example "Thaumaturgy", then your claim about what Archival Mandates 8.A addresses is incorrect. They would've been redacted from this case file and all other case files in which they appear. Let me demonstrate by using an example of terminology that actually underwent change(see next comment):
@Tumbledweeb
@Tumbledweeb 2 года назад
"From "Research & Records: Astral Exhibition": "ADDENDUM: New naming conventions have been established for the Astral entity now known as “Astral Spike”. Outdated terms in this report have been redacted." So, if you go through all written records on this entity, the only name that will be readable to you is "Astral Spike", because it's previous names, "Brain Cloud"/"Astral Fugue", have been redacted! But wait! If redacted, then how could I possibly know about it? Because that IDIOT Dr. Darling does a namedrop in one of his dumb videos! Review "Hotline: Astral Exhibition". One final note for you on "Possessed Object Gallery": It is NOT the same place as the Panopticon, and the name was NOT changed because of 'possession'. The name changed because the "Possessed Object Gallery" was discontinued due to the "Panopticon" being built, ordered by Trench. A Panopticon is a type of prison architecture designed by one of my heroes Jeremy Bentham. Same purpose, still a place of confinement, what has changed is that it's more secure, it's easier to keep track of."
