Controversial Thoughts: Acid/Alkaline balance on an Animal Based diet

Plant-based pundits love to bloviate about the benefits of eating an "alkaline" diet, but is there any real science to support this?
Nope.
In this week's edition of Controversial Thoughts (available here and all podcast feeds as well as RU-vid) I dig into the acid/alkaline balance and note how adding some fruit to a carnivore diet (= Animal Based diet, voila!) can be beneficial from a urinary pH perspective - which probably also reflects interstitial pH.
As I noted in last week's controversial thoughts, infants self-select for a balance of acidic/alkaline foods. Might be something for us to think about as adults, also.

A very important part of the acid/alkaline concept that you didn't mention is movement and breath. Deep inhalation is alkalizing, as is exercise. So, people who regularly exercise can generally tolerate a higher nutritional acid load. 🙂

Hi. Could you possibly put a link to the articles you cited in this video? I am an elderly woman with significant osteoporosis (DEXA -3.5), CKD 3 (oxalate nephropathy) with ongoing hypercalciuria, hypermagnesuria, stones and possible subclinical metabolic acidosis, and severe constipation with possible dysbiosis and malabsorptions issues (documented iron deficiency, iodine deficiency), and mild hypothyroidism as main known current problems and am trying hard to figure out what to do with my diet. My doctors (traditional allopathic) of course provide little direction. I had previously believed protein to be good and was generous with healthy meat, eggs and cheese, but am now switching to much lower protein and predominantly plant-based with attention to PRAL. These articles you mention in this video would be of great benefit to my further research. Thanks, and thanks for this video.

*I Lost 100lbs (440-340lbs). How do you deal with hair thinning and (I think) hypothyroidism on a modified carnivore diet?* I think I’ve developed a slight thyroid condition from UNDER-EATING and a slight iodine deficiency. I think my hair thinning is due to thyroid but also avidin binding biotin (biotin deficiency) because I was having 12 eggs + 1 litre of pasturised egg whites per week for 6 months. I’m currently taking a biotin supplement (which has some iodine). My diet is: Kangaroo meat, beef mince, porterhouse steak, salmon (once per week), canned sardines (cheap), avocado (1-2 per week), 150-200g strawberries or blueberries or raspberries per day (5 days per week), and 2-3 egg yolk per day. I also have lactose free full fat milk, full fat Greek yogurt. Occasionally sweet potatoes and some cheat meals. I’m letting my body get used to losing 100lbs. So I’m just having some more carbs this month, and letting my body adjust to all the weight loss

If you want your hair to stop thinning you have to cut out ALL of that bullshit. Paul is addicted to sugar, don't eat that shit. Eat beef and organs, a lot of collagen, the heart and soil hair and nails is probably good. That is it. If that seems too hard then you'll go bald, is what it is.

Interesting that cheeses are acidic. I recently experimented with adding cheese back into my diet but found it is too addictive. I would notice myself zone out and then realize I had eaten a whole wedge (the smaller ones they sell) after several weeks, my body put on too much visceral fat, so i am staying away till I can figure out a better solution for calcium in my diet. Hi Paul, we here in Finland are getting a "health tax". Hard fats will be taxed heavily. I guess it is named correctly as the healthy eating people will be taxed to pay drugs of the fat and lazy. We all know they eat too much backon and do not move enough. My 12y son and I went through that kid-episode together and discussed over carnivore eating which we do quite extensively. He came home from school two days ago with all urticaric burning skin after having something bad fed to him again. That was the third time this year regardless all the "we will fix your sons special grass-seed-free diet so he can eat in school" (they give free servings of prosessed food in our schools, but it is that crap from food-pyramid posters). I was really mad at the cook, principal and nurse and took him off the institutions foods. My son came home after having his first ever home made lunch and I made sure it was 100% carnivore-style. So I asked, How did it go? Did you get any rap about your private home meal? His reply was "naaa, they were just jealous about it".

I have ZERO access to grass fed anything in my country. if I asked any farmer about grass fed meat they would think I was in a coma for decades and didn't know that nowadays every animal in Poland is grain fed. I can find organic and free range produce, but forget about grain free meat or eggs. So I buy veal liver from a woman who has her own slaughterhouse and the business is family owned and very small. The way she raises her calves is probably no different than in any other place, but meat tastes different and so I buy at her place. This is the only choice I have, to search for small producers and best quality I can put my hands on. I was desperate before and thought I would never be able to eat like people I watch online, but I think I can. Also, since so many people in the world cannot even afford basic foods, we should be grateful for what we can afford, including grain fed meat.

There are three different categories of carnivores based on the level of meat consumption: hypercarnivores, mesocarnivores and hypocarnivores. 1. Carnivores that eat mostly meat are called hypercarnivores. These creatures are considered obligate carnivores because they cannot properly digest vegetation and have a diet that consists of at least 70 percent meat. The cat family for example. 2. Animals that depend on meat for at least 50 percent of their diet are called mesocarnivores. Along with meat, these animals will also eat fruits, vegetables and fungi. 3. Hypocarnivores are carnivores that eat the least amount of meat - less than 30 percent of their diet. These animals, which can also be considered omnivores, eat fish, berries, nuts and roots, as well as meat.
