Conventional Corn Journey: SPRAYER BLUES Breakdowns, bad parts, and answering why.

It's finally hitting home just how things in farming keep you on your toes. Did a lot of work rebuilding the sprayer, only to realize there were still bad parts I didn't address. It set me back some on my mental schedule, but most say there never is a schedule in farming. First year struggles are real!! #conventional #corn #weeds

If you are going with conventional corn you want to start with a clean field. With conventional corn it is very difficult to try to clean up grass . After the field is clean and the corn is up and running. Then scout, and once you start to see any weeds coming. You get out with your second pass.. We don't want to use a lot of chemicals.I get it i'm with you. But in conventional crops you have to be proactive with chemicals to keep them clean versus reactive. Then talk to your local water quality office or conservation office to see what works for your climate as to when to bring in a cover crop. Chance are for you. You could spread covers after the corn starts to drop, it's foliage.

Thank you so much Jon, your input and advice is really appreciated!! I agree totally, it was a long debate but I have enough to worry about anyway, I sprayed my burn down this weekend and will hopefully be able to work the fields next week. Heavy dose or full strength rather of pre-emerge/plant and fingers crossed. I do think this will be a huge text if my diligence and patience, but a road I wanted to travel!! Came in to eat an early lunch before spraying my self. When I first took over the spraying I had a Spra Coupe 220. It had foam markers. Only 200 gallons so I would have to fill up several times in a big field. When I would run out of spray I would mark my location with an old Coke bottle. I bought a gps the next year.

If you're not using herbicide on corn you'd better plan on cultivating until the corn gets above the weeds, if you don't the weeds grow faster than the corn, waste of seed corn in my opinion

I am gonna do my best to keep up with it! The pre -emerge should help quite a bit, well hope it will. I will tell you that you are spot on about burn down. We try to use as little chemical here as we can, but cultivation for weed control is something that has to be monitored- it takes extra time and needs to be done at certain times. It is difficult to keep up with when working off the farm. Make sure your burn down doesn't drift and take out your other crops 😂😂😂
@Pennies_on_the_dollar
@Pennies_on_the_dollar 5 месяцев назад
Thank you Mr Chris for that insight!! Oh my gosh does it ever, on the cultivation. That would be my luck, one free day needs to be done, can't get off work in time, rains for 4 days and weeds grow like crazy 🤣🤣 I have watched enough of Jack, Tim and Mr Pete to know my limitations 😉 I agree on the chemicals too, I love the sprayer but not fond of the spraying. So I am trying to do as little as possible too!! Boy I know, on the other crops!! I did the bottom land first on the questionable wind day, and hit the field adjacent to the wheat early this am...dead calm wind 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣 Thank you very much sir for the great advice and all the support!! Hang in there Nelson, you're getting closer! A suggestion for your spacing, get a bunch of marker flags, maybe a couple different colors, then when you put them out alternate colors so you can tell which one you're looking for at the other end of the field. Just a thought, you're probably way ahead of that by now. I'm excited for you Nelson, looking forward to seeing seed go in the ground this spring! Hope you have a good week!
