It is interesting, but all the VW I had - there were no issues, Getta's, GTI's, no problems at all. All the Audi's I had and have - all kinds of problems. I still own A3 2009, decided to keep it - bad decision. I bought extended warranty for 2 years, kept taking the car to a dealer, now it is out of warranty, beside the little things that cost a lot, I had DSG replaced, thanks to the extended warranty that Audi provided on DSG, which is up to 160k km, I had 158k when it happened. Every time something breaks, it is around $1000-2500 repairs. I owned a couple of A4's and still drive one (A4 2017), nice cars, love the design, etc, but little issues and faults come up quite often. Right now I have got 3 things that need to be taken care of. Annoying.
Dont agree....those GTI wheels looks so good. Here in Europe 17” is standard and those are ugly. Anyway... I still cant decide...A3 or GTI...but we get the Active Info Display and the LED tail lights on the GTI that makes it a little bit more ”premium” compared to the US version.
The US market always gets fewer features than Germany. The packaging is different and the US prices are usually lower because a loaded model in the US isn't as loaded as a European model.
I wouldn't go for A3, way less car fore more money and wait for problems which will come quite soon. I decided to get rid of my A3 and buy GTI. I don't care about the wheels, I don't see them anyways when driving.
Russell Armani really depends which a3 u have. The 2 litre Quattro imo is better than the gti plus it feels more refined and better looking. Also u can’t say that the gti won’t have any problems cos at the end of the day it’s a Volkswagen and r prone to just as much issues as Audi’s.
I have a MK7 gti and want an A3 as my next car. Having a difficult time deciding. Also considering a BMW 2 series I sure like having a 2 door like the BMW. DECISIONS.

You don't want a manual GTI. Why? A clutch upgrade is mandatory once you throw a tune on it, which you will. These cars aren't made to be left stock, with the amount of power a tune squeezes out of it. I know. I have a Eurodyne Stage 2 2016 DSG GTI with about 300whp, lol. The DSG can hold over 500+lbs/ft of torque so you are good up to a big turbo with a conservative tune, which is around 450whp or so. Only downside with the GTI is it's FWD, which is absolute ass for traction when you add power.
I don't know, you guys aren't factoring in looks which is major qualifier for deciding. Some won't want to drive a hatchback, where as the A3 would win. Or some don't want to drive a sedan, where the Golf GTI would win. Need to be a Golf GTI vs A3 Etron comparison, and a 2019 Jetta GLI vs A3 2.0T sedan.
Good comments on these two German autos. I nearly bought a GTI in 2009 and I remember disliking the std alloys they had back then. I agree, the current wheels don't appeal to me but I'm still a big GTI (Golf) fan. Your A3 looks 👌🏼 I hope you're diggin living in Dallas 👋🏻
New Car Spin oh okay didn’t know that. I just upgraded to a fully loaded 2016 A3 from a fully loaded 2017 GLI (sedan version of the GTI). I loved my gli and it was a bit nicer with some extra features and better interior. But you can’t beat the Quattro for launches and hard acceleration when cornering.
Hi. It is now 2 years later and you can get both of these used at about the same price. Around 25k-ish for either the GTI SE or the Premium Plus Quattro A3. Without the cost consideration, since they are the same cost, which one would you get? Is maintaining the Audi significantly more expensive? I'm asking because you're an Audi owner
A3 has more tech and isn't as dated as the Golf. Both drive well and the Audi was probably maintained properly especially if the owner bought Audi care. They are the same car, so maintenance costs will only vary betwern VW and Audi dealers. I'd rather take an Audi in for service and have the benefit of a loaner car. I wouldn't buy either unless they were CPO by the manufacturer. Otherwise, it's cheaper to lease a new car.
+Joe It's about the overall experience of two different cars built on the same platform. It's about what the capabilities are when to go in two different directions.
for the americans i'd suggest if you already have the GOLF GTI 2017 there is NO NEED TO UPGRADE IMO. for the poeple living in europe like myself it is very worth to upgrade with the new active info display and golf r brakes , the US sadly havent got it so just wait for 2019 :)
So rn I’m considering Another GTI or an A3. I had a 2016 2 door GTI, now I’m looking at a 2016 A3 Gray Ex & Walnut int Prestige with 22K miles vs a 2018 GTI Forrest Green ex and Plaid int and is a SE with 38K miles. GTI is CPO though. What do you guys recommend going with? I love the styling and interior of the A3 just dislike that it’s heavier/slower then GTI.
@@RoadandTract one audi s line is from a Mazda dealer . It's a white 2015. (Haldex issue potentially ?) ..the other 2016 is at carmax. ...only a3s I see at audi dealer are 17+ models . Out of pocket for me . Do you know which ones may have the Haldex awd issues ?
New Car Spin I thought I recognized you. I think it was your review of a 2017 Q7 Prestige which led to me purchasing one. Now since my wife has taken it from me and gave me her old Jeep, which I hate. I find myself wanting something sporty and have been looking at A3 S3 GTI and Golf R. I have driven an A3 cab 2.0 Quattro and loved it, I just haven’t driven a Golf yet to compare it but I’m sure either car will satisfy my needs and ultimately come down to availability and best deal. Keep up the good reviews. 👍🏻
They all have the same mqb platform. They all share the same ea888 engine. They are within a few thousand dollars in price. Therefore, you can compare them and I just did.
This A3 and the GTI are very much comprable, other than the availability of AWD on the A3. Speaking of Brian, I don’t think we’ve ever seen a full review on your A3.
It’s a great comparison! They’re both very similar and great sports cars. I own an A3 and I’ve driven the GTi. They both push 220 from factory. The only two obvious differences are the FWD on the GTi and the DSG on the A3. Aside from these things, both great match.
Hyundai and KIA hired Audi's main designer Peter S. So, actually what is happening now is that Audi is copying Hyundai and KIA, not the other way around. Audi should have done everything they could to hold onto Peter, now they are stuck in the past where Hyundai and KIA are the future... Also, Hyundai hired BMW's suspension designer as well. Basically, Hyundai and KIA are going to be the future of the auto enthusiasts if VW and Audi don't get their shit together soon.
